If Donald Trump's venomously anti-immigration rhetoric has you doubting the United States' historic empathy for refugees, look no further than McAllen, Texas. A small town located just north of the Rio Grande border, McAllen became a pivotal safe haven for the tens of thousands of Central American immigrants who fled to the U.S. in 2014 seeking asylum. Rival gangs throughout El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras had escalated the shocking violence of their battle for control over local drug routes, targeting women and children as the victims of their atrocities. Since then, McAllen's Sacred Heart Church has become a critical relief center for these families, many of whom have endured unspeakable horrors and still face the heartbreaking possibility of deportation. Thanks to Sister Norma Pimentel, the undaunted leader of the church's assistance program, Sacred Heart provides newly-arrived refugees with showers, clothing, shoes, beds, and the emotional support they need to start rebuilding their lives.

00:01I am going to be in here,
00:06and this is already at 40% of the time.
00:15I come in, and this is what I start doing right now.
00:17I'm going to lose it.
00:18I want to go in here.
00:43The debate over immigration has been a hot topic in recent media coverage.
00:48Build that wall! Build that wall!
00:51Tens of thousands of migrants have been forced to flee El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras
00:57as violence between gangs warring over drug routes has led to some of the highest homicide rates in the world.
01:06Desperate to save their lives and escape, they travel by train, by foot, and by makeshift rafts.
01:14Moms from Central America hand-carrying their children across the border.
01:20Contrary to what dominates the airwaves, they are not sneaking across the border.
01:24They turn themselves into Border Patrol upon arrival.
01:29In 2016 alone, over 68,000 families have crossed the border seeking asylum.
01:35This is the story of one woman's journey to reunite with her mother in the U.S.
01:41This is Behind the Headlines.
02:10We are here at Sacred Heart Church.
02:12This is where people arrive after their long journey.
02:19This all started back in 2014 when we were seeing hundreds of them being dropped off at the bus station.
02:26We had a massive wave of families, children, women, moms coming into our country, and most of them unaccompanied by
02:34themselves.
02:37They're human beings, they're people, and they're children, and they need care and love and attention.
03:06They killed two or three people daily.
03:10And the women, the first one, they viola.
03:13All these bad things are the people.
03:18That's why we were almost fleeing from them.
03:23I had to travel in bus for 20 hours, and she was crying.
03:27I was crying.
03:28So, she was almost able to get in there.
03:31And I was just giving water, pouring water.
03:36Some soldiers, when we were hiding in the mountain,
03:41they started to shoot.
03:42And they were coming to us and shooting.
03:45And I just did it, and I was just throwing them to the ground because they were shooting.
03:54They're going to go before a judge.
03:57And there are strangers in this country, very difficult to make sure that their story is heard correctly if they
04:03don't have legal representation.
04:05If they don't find that help, it's very possible that they're going to be deported back to their country.
04:12They're not safe there.
04:13They run the risk of being kidnapped, of being recruited, of being raped.
04:20It's very dangerous for the children, and the children is why they're here.
04:26They're not safe.
04:28They have an electrocardiogram and an echo.
04:30At the moment, they were fine.
04:31But they needed surgery.
04:33But they had to wait.
04:38How long did they wait?

05:55Salvador, me dijo.
07:27Bien.
07:30Bien bonita está, mami.
07:32Y vos todas aquí, esta propensión me da.
07:35Ay, yo voy a engordar aquí, mami.
07:37¿Qué quieres?
07:38¿Dinero quieres para los bombones?
07:40Mami, quiero dinero.
07:41¿Ah?

07:56Ya conoció a mi hija.
08:40Bien.
08:43No sé, a seguir adelante, a fixed digging sin poder.
08:44No sé.
08:52No sé.
08:53No sé, aš.
