00:00J. Manuel is no stranger to the Halloween game,
00:03making costumes that live up to his fashion-forward name.
00:08Watch J. take us behind the scenes to see how he makes the costume of his dreams.
00:14You might know J. Manuel as the beauty guru on America's Next Top Model,
00:19but every year he takes on a special Halloween project himself.
00:24J. is known for turning heads on Halloween by creating unique costumes
00:28that make him almost unrecognizable.
00:31This year, he took inspiration from the 2014 film Ex Machina
00:36to become a biomechatronic being, MRJ.
00:41In order to start this transformation, J. first assembles a dream team.
00:46Oscar-winning movie artists Dave and Lou Elsie
00:48have an extensive background in costume and makeup design.
00:52You may have seen their work in X-Men First Class,
00:55Where the Wild Things Are, and Star Wars Episode III.
00:59The team works together to bring J's futuristic costume to life.
01:04Starting with renderings, they go over every detail of the look,
01:08including the graphics of the MRJ logo.
01:11A plaster casting of J's head is made to capture his exact features.
01:16This casting is then used to help sculpt the prosthetics that will transform J into an out-of-this-world
01:23machine.
01:25Just like any big performance, a test run is required before the big day.
01:30This is the time for troubleshooting.
01:32The costume is tried on, and basic makeup and prosthetics are applied so the team can assess if all elements
01:38are working,
01:38then adjustments are made to perfect the look.
01:41Now it's time to wait until October 31st.
01:45It's the big day!
01:47It's finally time for J to start the six-hour process of transforming into MRJ.
01:53First, J puts on the contact lenses.
01:57Now it's on to the prosthetics.
02:00J's skin is cleaned to remove all oils.
02:03The MRJ headpiece is placed on J's head, and glued down around the edges.
02:09To make sure nothing budges, the team uses super strong adhesives.
02:15Instead of letting it all air dry, a hair dryer heats and locks everything in place.
02:21Finally, they add perfectly sculpted prosthetics for J's cheekbones and chin,
02:26and the final portions of the headpiece are trimmed for a perfect fit.
02:31Time for makeup.
02:33J's area of expertise.
02:35Airbrushing is used to apply an oil-free base.
02:38J then finishes off his look with foundation from his own line.
02:46Fake screws are painted on, and the final touches are added to make the look pop.
02:53This biomechatronic being wouldn't be complete without a costume that is out of this world.
02:59The multi-layered costume starts with a bodysuit covered in pads, followed by silver gloves and boots.
03:06The show-stopping piece might just be these flashing LED lights.
03:14With all of the elements in place, MRJ is born.
03:21His glam squad by his side, J is ready to stomp the red carpet, causing double takes left and right.
