00:00My name is Amy Schumer in I Feel Pretty.
00:02I play the character Renee Bennett.
00:04She has pretty low self-esteem.
00:06Just sort of things have happened to her in her life
00:08that have made her feel like she's kind of not good enough.
00:11But she really aspires to feel good about herself.
00:19You know, in any magazine article, anything you do,
00:21it's like all like confidence.
00:23People are like, what's the sexiest thing?
00:24You're like, confidence.
00:25But it's like, do we ever really see an example of that?
00:28That's all what the movie's all about.
00:29So when this came up, it was just like,
00:32this is exactly what I want to say right now
00:34and what I want to communicate.
00:36And I feel like what I can do
00:38to make people feel better right now.
00:46A lot of the scenes in the movie I can relate to,
00:49even the parts where I'm overconfident
00:51or also just like really feeling yourself
00:53and then just being reminded like, nope, you know?
00:56I mean, I can relate to going into an exercise class
00:59and just feeling super intimidated.
01:01And like everyone else is just supermodels.
01:04If you really look around, there's all types of body types
01:07and whatever.
01:07But you also see that front row of real toned, real young people.
01:17I remember in like fifth grade, you know, you're so unaware of your body.
01:24You're not like sucking in or anything.
01:26I mean, now who knows?
01:27Kids probably are.
01:28But I'm like, you know, nine, 10 years old.
01:30Like my two front teeth didn't fall out until I was like nine.
01:33And I also got my period really early.
01:35So things, it was a nightmare.
01:36You know, I just like had boobs and I was just like, eh.
01:39And I remember my friend, this guy I was friends with,
01:42was like, you have a big butt.
01:43And I was like, I do?
01:45And he was like, yeah.
01:46And he didn't like say it like it was bad.
01:47But I just, it never occurred to me that our bodies
01:50were these things that were very different
01:52and that would be judged.
01:53And then it was just like, that's the first of a series
01:55of many things like that, that everyone experiences.
01:58And probably not just, I'm sure not just women.
02:00What if like we didn't let those moments shape how we felt
02:04about ourselves?
02:10Early on, it's not just you putting pressure on yourself.
02:13It's literally people saying to you like, well,
02:16if you can gain 15 pounds and just be like the quirky friend,
02:20or you can try and lose 15 pounds and be the lead.
02:22And then also, you know, magazines would write about me
02:25as plus size when I was like a size four or six.
02:28People are going to perceive me however.
02:31It doesn't matter.
02:32Being beautiful is not, I feel beautiful,
02:34but that's not my thing.
02:35It's not what makes me who I am or like interesting to people.
02:39So I'm not going to, you know, put all my focus on that.
02:43I just want to feel healthy and strong and good.
02:45But I just decided early on, like, this is how it's going to be.
02:53I'm lucky to be friends with Gloria Steinem.
02:56This isn't advice, but I read a quote once from her
02:58that said, we became the men we wanted to marry.
03:00And that really like blew my mind as like a younger girl.
03:04Just like, you have to be your own hero.
03:06You have to be, don't like wait for this person to come save you.
03:09Like, be that person.
03:15I hope women have fun and laugh at this movie.
03:18And I hope they leave there feeling great about themselves
03:22and what they're capable of.
03:24And I just hope they leave there empowered, filled with self-love.
03:27But, you know, maybe they'll just laugh a little bit
03:29and have some popcorn and that's cool too.
03:30Be careful.
03:31Thanks.
