00:00Hey guys and welcome to The Mention. I'm Emily. I'm Ariana. And I'm Serena and this is your weekly pop
00:06culture roundup of everything pop culture lovers are buzzing about this week. And we are pre-gaming for none other
00:10than the Oscars.
00:12Woo! Now we had a little break in award season because of the Olympics but we are back and I'm
00:18so excited to see who's going to take home that Oscar on this Sunday.
00:21Before we get started we are sipping on some Perrier Jouet Champagne which is actually really special guys because this
00:29is the official drink at some of the after parties. One which I will be attending which is the call
00:34me by your name cast party.
00:36Okay we'll be attending. Where's your possible one? Is it me? Of course Serena's like I'm attending. I'll be on
00:40the guest list. I'm clear. We'll see. But cheers guys. Cheers ladies. I'm excited. Cheers. Alright are you guys ready
00:46for some champagne and hot tea?
00:47Because we have a lot of Oscars hot tea. So first up we've been talking a lot about kind of
00:54red carpet politics this award season right everything from like what people are wearing to what kind of questions should
00:59be asked and E! News has kind of come under fire and there's a lot of guessing about what's going
01:04to happen on Sunday because first of all E! kind of came under a little bit of controversy earlier this
01:09award season when a lot of celebrities from Debra Messing and Eva Longoria to SJP basically were calling them out
01:15for not paying Kat Sadler as much as
01:17the rest of the hosts were getting paid the male hosts. So that happened and then there was also a
01:22moment where Tarana Burke the founder of Me Too was speaking and E! instead panned to Dakota Johnson's dress which
01:29like who cares about what Dakota Johnson is wearing we have the Me Too founder talking right now.
01:33So E! has kind of been messing up this award season and on top of that now Ryan Seacrest has
01:38come under fire because there were allegations from a former stylist who said that he sexually assaulted her and then
01:44Variety this week got a copy of the letter she wrote
01:47detailing what happened and it's pretty bad like it's pretty damning I have to say so there's a lot of
01:53questions about how E! is going to handle the red carpet on Sunday right because as of right now Ryan
01:56Seacrest is still their point of contact but like you were saying a lot of celebrities are declining to do
02:01interviews there's even a report that the producer said they have no celebrities booked yeah it's a big thing and
02:06I think kind of what we saw with E! is you know obviously E! is a huge network and they
02:11want to be as politically correct as possible but when you pour so much time and energy into
02:15the wrong things and not focusing on really dedicating your time to answering those Me Too times up questions all
02:21people remember are like the Debra Messing moments where E! didn't step up and they didn't you know take control
02:26of the questions they were asking and as of right now E! does say that Ryan is still supposed to
02:29be hosting on Sunday which that's a bold call because if you read that letter I mean this girl's talking
02:34about how he was groping her in his underwear and this was ongoing from 2007 until 2013 but they said
02:41that they closed the investigation against him because of a lack of evidence but they've had this letter since November
02:45so it's definitely a little sketchy on behalf of E! and obviously they've had you know they've had controversy with
02:51Juliana Rancic I know you love her which they've had controversy with Juliana Rancic before for you know she said
02:57that Zendaya looked like she smelled like patchouli on a red carpet like they have had they've come under fire
03:02a few times so I think E! needs to really step their game up on Sunday if they really want
03:06to stay in the red carpet hosting game absolutely it's kind of crazy that they're still having Ryan do it
03:11our celebrity's gonna go up to him what do you guys think well actually the
03:15The Cut did a big investigative piece yesterday that came out and some of their sources said that some celebrities
03:21have talked about maybe just going and only speaking to Juliana which I think would be kind of weird I
03:26think it's like they're trying to make a point but I think if you really want to make a point
03:29just skip E! altogether because I'm sorry but I feel like they made the wrong call on this one
03:34You know what I also think though is I feel like we're seeing a lot of people being outspoken and
03:37using their place as you know being able to speak and have this platform and I could see a lot
03:41of celebrities actually going up to Ryan and asking about them easy times at the moment
03:45and really just asking straight let me tell you who's gonna be nervous on Saturday night Ryan Seacrest
03:49I can't imagine the prep that's going into that right now he knows it's coming well I thought that we'd
03:54see no more of Harvey Weinstein but alas he is near the red carpet but not really luckily
04:00on Thursday a statue a gold statue of Harvey Weinstein appeared very close to where the Oscars are going to
04:06be on Sunday he's robe swaddled on a casting couch which is incredible because fans can literally go and sit
04:13next to him
04:14and he has an Oscar statue kind of placed strategically by his groin area this is actually a collab by
04:20street artist Plastic Jesus who's best known for his annual Oscar season installations that aim at the dark side of
04:28show business and provide a lot of social commentary and he collabed with Joshua Ginger Monroe who's this artist who's
04:33behind the infamous naked Donald Trump statues so I really love this piece I think it's so poignant and just
04:40like even though I don't want to see any more of Harvey Weinstein I think it's important to
04:44show that like just because maybe he's out of the industry doesn't mean his legacy isn't and that like we
04:49still need to continue hashtag times up but the piece was intentionally crafted so you could sit next to him
04:56and take a picture which I thought was interesting because basically the artists were saying that to be able to
05:00knock a monster down and peg and put fun and ridicule him helps remove its power right so I thought
05:07that was really really smart what do you guys think about the statue I think that's really powerful
05:11and actually after I saw this article I went and looked up the artist Plastic Jesus and he's kind of
05:15known for making these art installations like you were saying that have some sort of deeper meaning
05:18or they you know deconstruct some social concept and so I really loved the fact that he does this and
05:23he even said that for this statue that he created it was a crowdsource so he's like I want funds
05:28from that and so people actually supported it
05:29so I think that goes to show that people wanted this to happen like you were saying to really claim
05:33that power
05:33and to have this sort of peace and almost like a laugh not a laughing moment but some sort of
05:38where you can feel like you can grasp it and kind of take your own power back with it
05:42I agree but I one thing I mean I don't know I don't know about you guys but I didn't
05:45even want to see his face like I had some kind of like another I didn't really want to see
05:48his face
05:49and I think you know I think Variety and or the Hollywood Reporter one of the two of them did
05:53a story what if we made the Oscar statue this year a woman and I think like something like that
05:57that would have been a little bit more empowering
05:59could have been a more interesting way to kind of start that conversation of taking the power back so I
06:03got the intent behind that statue but I didn't love the fact that it was like actually Harvey
06:07because I'm like I don't even want to sit next to that man see that man and it's also gross
06:11like I wouldn't want that on my Insta feed like I don't want him here
06:15but on the other hand it's kind of like he was such a huge part of this year so you
06:18feel like you almost have to acknowledge it right
06:20but yeah I can see what you're saying there are probably other ways to do it but it seemed like
06:23it could be important
06:24definitely made a statement yeah that's for sure and you guys remember last year at the Oscars switching gears just
06:30a little bit to another scandal was when the best picture was announced
06:34the most infamous moment where La La Land thought they had won the best picture award it turned out Moonlight
06:40actually had won and cue to the most awkward 25 to 30 second clip on television
06:46people were scrambling no one knew what to do people were pointing fingers it was a huge thing and honestly
06:51I was cringing at home
06:52do you guys remember watching that oh absolutely I was here in the office at Refinery and all of us
06:56literally were just like what's happening
06:58like it took a minute to really figure out what had happened because we were all just screaming and I
07:01was like I can't hear what are they saying
07:03like it was it was the craziest moment I've ever seen on ever and it was wild because so many
07:07people were pulling for La La Land
07:08so many people were pulling for Moonlight so the fact that those two up against each other
07:12crazy so this year the Oscars are not taking any chances and I thought this was really interesting they've actually
07:18implemented six new rules
07:21are you guys ready for them the first one the celebrity presenter and the stage manager will confirm they have
07:26been giving the correct envelope which to me is a no brainer
07:29right like why was that not happening already why I am confused why that's a new rule being implemented but
07:34okay
07:34the second PWC partners are prohibited from using cell phones or social media during the show I guess they could
07:40get distracted or it's just
07:41that's what happened he was taking a selfie the guy that messed up last year taking a selfie he wasn't
07:46supposed to be doing that
07:47but he was like oh here's the card I gotta take a selfie and like that's what happened
07:51so no cell phones at all they're taking it all right one job
07:55but so the PWC accountants who actually do the show will have the memorize the winners list before you know
08:00it's always you open it up and they're surprised too they already know so there's no no chance
08:04so a third balloting partner in the control room also has the list memorized
08:09so if something happens they're gonna cut away the control room will know
08:13so all three accountants will attend rehearsals and practice if anything goes wrong which again
08:19another one shouldn't they already be in rehearsals and practice I don't know all right and then this
08:23year the PWC chairman Tim Ryan will personally be involved with Oscars operations this year so I feel
08:28like Tim was probably last year he's like you guys are all screwed up I'm taking it over yeah yeah
08:31he
08:32was probably at home eating popcorn he was like ah damn next year I gotta actually go to this show
08:36the Tim Ryan show make sure they do it like no I mean the thing about last year it's like
08:40okay the right person
08:41ended up winning the right movie but at the same time like I was upset because because it was a
08:45live show and it had to end I feel like Moonlight didn't get their the speech that they got to
08:50make
08:50like it was like oh like craziness yeah I feel like they almost got robbed of their moment 100%
08:55and
08:55then the next day I mean there was a lot of memes about that and a lot of people who
08:58were outraged and
08:59that's why a lot of people thought it was maybe a conspiracy like it was like oh we're finally
09:03going to give this amazing black movie this moment but right not really though so I mean I hope that
09:07that's not true I mean I wouldn't put it past anybody honestly you guys believe the conspiracy
09:12comment below I also do feel bad for La La Land too because you re-watched that clip and they're
09:17all just like rustling around on stage they look so scared afterwards like that has to be like a
09:22scarring moment also also the memes of everyone in the audience like Meryl Streep like like yeah
09:28those were reactions wild wild well guys there's even more Oscars controversy this year it's like
09:32there's a lot happening actually The Shape of Water now y'all know this was I loved The Shape of
09:37Water
09:38like I was so excited about this movie like it was so romantic and like fantastical but there's a
09:43little controversy surrounding it so basically uh this man who named Paul Zendel says that Guillermo
09:50del Toro who um directed the movie which by the way it was nominated 13 times for an Oscar this
09:56year
09:57so it's a big Oscar movie it's in the running for a lot of different categories and it's won so
10:01many
10:01other awards too yes yeah and it's already getting a lot of love um but Paul Zendel basically accused
10:06the director Guillermo of plagiarizing the script from a play that came out in 1969 so Paul Zendel's
10:13father David wrote a play about a woman who is working in a science lab who falls in love with
10:19a dolphin now that may sound similar to The Shape of Water which is about a mute woman who's a
10:26cleaning
10:26lady in a research lab and falls in love with an alien so doesn't it the plot sounds very similar
10:31however there are I mean there are some big differences and Guillermo is saying that he uh
10:38never ever heard of this play before that all of his collaborators vehemently deny ever having
10:42heard of seen write a script for the play anything okay okay but guys when I watched the movie I
10:47was
10:47like this is Beauty and the Beast well there I mean there's similarities to a lot of those like
10:51like woman falls in love with another species I didn't think it was that original either I will
10:55say though art imitates art like everything is inspired by something for sure and I sort of have
11:00I feel like that he created this beautiful movie and he probably was inspired by lots of other things
11:05he's seen before an interesting thing though was that this movie came out last fall and they didn't
11:09actually um come forward about the plagiarism claims until January and so Fox in their statement
11:14very shadily was like I think that they just want money out of us because they waited until award season
11:19to
11:20say anything and now they're trying to get us to settle but we're not backing down we're we're
11:24standing behind Guillermo and his claims that he didn't plagiarize this is his project no one has
11:29ever collaborated on anything with this play so I mean it was interesting timing like this movie's been
11:34out for a hot minute y'all waited till award season to say anything and you know that's a really
11:38interesting fact that I read yesterday researching the Oscars is that typically in the past Oscars year
11:42the winner of best picture their like revenue and sales of people seeing the movie goes up by at least
11:48three million yeah of course right you'll make sense right it's the best picture but it's yeah
11:53you'll watch it and then they actually go see it which so it's funny it's like you're right
11:56a fox would be like what the heck yeah like they're like you guys are just trying to get the
12:00money
12:00out of us now so I don't know I still love the shape of water and I hope that it
12:03gets a lot of
12:04love during award season but there's also so many other great movies nominated so I guess we'll see
12:08did you love shape of water um no I didn't know I argued about this it was so funny because
12:16after
12:17I was gearing up going to see it I was like yes can't wait like Ari loves it the next
12:21day I came
12:21in and I was like Ari listen I think maybe I just missed something I was like I'm so confused
12:26I was
12:27literally just like I mean yes it was beautiful and then after that I really did want to learn sign
12:30language but other than that that was good takeaway the whole thing I was like I felt like it was
12:37overhyped I did like the art direction but I'm kind of like yeah I would think I didn't love it
12:41I disagree on movies sometimes it's fine it's okay it wasn't a Disney movie I get it
12:46did you guys like oh the shape throwing if you guys like shape of water I want to know comment
12:52below
12:52because I liked it too I like I thought it was very stylized on to the next guys there's an
12:57Oscars category that I should start and it's called break out stars and then we should say
13:02just like that but anyway I want to recognize the actors that literally appeared out of thin air
13:08during 2017 and number one I want to give it to well I want to give it to Tiffany Haddish
13:14our girl
13:14yes absolutely and Timothee Chalamet my future husband who is like the he is like the it person
13:19right now oh so sexy 2017 was the year of Tiffany Haddish though and it sucks that girl's trip got
13:25snubbed and it was nominated for zero awards I know how Ariana feels about that because it grossed
13:30over 140 million dollars worldwide and it was also considered one of the top films of 2017 and I
13:36thought that having Regina Hall Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith was like having the trifecta
13:41and then all of a sudden comes this newcomer Tiffany Haddish out of and I'm like hold on where have
13:46you been
13:47yeah I mean Tiffany she didn't really come out of thin air because she's been on the stand-up scene
13:51for a hot minute she's been doing her thing but in a major motion picture but Girlship really put her
13:55like on the mat for sure so it was really a bummer but I will say Tiffany has gotten some
13:59amazing
14:00opportunities she's hosting them to be movie awards she's going to be doing uh voicing an animated
14:04character she's a first look she did SNL she's got she got a first look deal with Netflix so I
14:10feel
14:10like with for her she's like Oscars who like I'm fine with the I it's all good we actually have
14:14a video to
14:15show you her best moments of 2017. Take a look. Girl you can't get no infection in your booty hoe.
14:21It's a booty hoe.
14:32I want to be somebody when I grow up I always want to be I want to be I want
14:36to be a huge star.
14:37I grew up in foster care anybody else grew up in the system make some noise if it was in
14:41the system
14:44so I'm the only special here huh. I used to work at an airline. Okay yeah yeah let's get to
14:50this
14:50story real quick. As soon as I seen you I upgraded you to first class right because your seat was
14:54in
14:54the back and so I had asked you for your autograph and you was like I'm not really in the
15:02move to
15:02uh sign any autographs and I was like I'm not in the mood to get first class upgrades either but
15:08I want to get my own place one day work with Jada Pinkett Smith have my own stand-up comedy
15:13set
15:13special sit across from you one day and you googly eye me like yeah
15:22you selected boo boo jeffries knock knock who's there boo boo jeffries boo boo jeffries who if you
15:30don't know you stupid they tell you you're not funny they tell you if you do this i'll give you
15:35this if
15:36you do that i'll let you open up for me i'm gonna use my talent i'm gonna use my know
15:40-how and i'm gonna
15:41use my work ethic to achieve and then one day you're gonna be asking to open up for me and
15:46that's what
15:46happened i will not allow no man to shut down this dream i have because it keeps coming to me
16:03and
16:03it's like god keep telling me you got to do this you got to share your story you got to
16:06spread this
16:06joy you got to spread love like you got to do it tiff i'm obsessed with her i mean she
16:12is truly
16:13my favorite breakout star of definitely and we got to give some love to tiffany chalamet
16:17he's from new york he went to la guardia high school so i feel like we're like connected somehow
16:21and anyway i thought he had an amazing performance in call me by your name he's been in homeland like
16:26he's been around as an actor too but like this was really his breakout movie and he's nominated for best
16:31actor so i'm really hopeful for him that being said the youngest person ever to have won best actor
16:36was 29 years old and that was adrian brody when he played the pianist in the pianist so i feel
16:41like
16:41the academy isn't about giving really young people awards but i think if anyone were to do it it would
16:48be timothy for sure i mean that scene at the end of that movie when he looks into the camera
16:51like
16:51everyone for five minutes has been talking about that scene i've never seen a movie like that in
16:56a movie ever everything i mean i think you don't see him reading act you don't see you don't see
17:01him
17:02like okay this isn't the script like sometimes you can catch up with that like it just he is the
17:05role
17:06he played it so beautifully and i just i don't know i really i'm hoping for it i want to
17:11watch
17:11call me by your name tonight let's have a movie party you know what it reminds me of though is
17:15like you remember when you first saw leo in titanic like there's something about him that's so
17:18captivating i feel like he's like a little young leo where like and now everyone's obsessed with
17:22and he's on the cover of gq he's got all these new movies books jennifer lawrence is like i'm waiting
17:25to marry him and i'm like girl get in line no but i really feel like i don't like that
17:30pairing honestly i feel like if
17:31he doesn't win this award season he's gonna be around for a very long time yeah i mean he's also
17:36in lady burb which came out like i think he this is really just the start for him i think
17:40he's gonna
17:40have an amazing career absolutely so if he doesn't get an oscar on sunday i think he's gonna get it
17:45but i am rooting for him i love him yeah i've got our favorite moments to tippin timidee
18:05i don't know who i fooled to let me into a category with someone as talented as mary j blige
18:10but i will take it the ease with which you are able to traverse across so many mediums with such
18:15skill miss blige is a tremendous inspiration and i'm simply honored to have been included in
18:19category with you tonight and i'm serious about that
18:42you're not sick of me yet well i just i just wanted to be with you
18:50i'll i'm gonna i'll go
19:02hey i i like your band uh with jonah ruiz len fance new
19:10uh well i i saw your thanksgiving show my name's lady bird it's weird you shake hands yeah
19:43and lastly since i am a new york guy i thought i'd take a moment to thank some new york
19:48artists that have inspired me edie falco mary j blige greta gerwig josh safty cardi b al pacino
19:54martin scorsese kid cuddy and my mom who's sitting right there peace and love thank you
20:14all right guys so it is now time to pack a punch i wanted to talk about a movie that
20:19really packed a
20:19punch this year get out do you guys remember when get out first came out and it was just everywhere
20:24it
20:24was like everyone was talking about it it was like it really took over the zeitgeist 100 right
20:28yep so get out really actually made history this year for a few different reasons the first reason
20:33was it was one of the rare movies to get a hundred percent rating on rotten tomatoes which was at
20:38the
20:38time since then like lady bird and a few other movies have gotten the same rating but get out was
20:42the first movie to really ever do that that was a big moment and i think it kind of was
20:46an underdog
20:46movie where you heard about it a ton but then once it was like a hundred percent rotten tomatoes
20:50everyone's like wait what is this right and director jordan peele who you guys may remember
20:54from key and peel he's a comedian he's been doing his kind of funny thing for a long time so
20:59this very
20:59unique kind of combination of horror satire social commentary that was a really it was like something
21:05totally unexpected concoction that he whipped out exactly and we hadn't really seen anything like
21:09that um you know in movies before so jordan peele actually made history as the first director to get
21:16best screenplay best director and best picture nomination and he's a black man so just saying
21:21like that is a really big moment in history for sure um and he also made history because he um
21:27is now kind of he started this new genre so he's going to be releasing a lot more like social
21:32commentary satire horror genre mixed movies and he's already making a movie which is coming out
21:38next year he hasn't confirmed what it's about but imagine all the things that he could talk about
21:42that were kind of like get out but in a different way yes that was the big thing is i
21:46remember
21:46when my roommates and i sat down to watch the movie wanted to watch a scary movie a horror movie
21:50but i think he does so well as he mixes this like sort of thrill of watching you know a
21:53thriller or
21:54a scary movie but there is such a more deeper social construct within the theme of the movie yeah
21:59and he did that so effortlessly and then obviously it appealed to so many people and it takes great
22:04writing to do that it's all about the subtext it's not on your on the nose you know drama and
22:08scary
22:09which we see in all these horror movies recently like the fact that he really created a genre which it
22:13feels like he did yeah so sick also he's funny too like right well that's the thing i think the
22:20most history making thing that he did with this movie is he really showed like this was a movie an
22:24indie movie about an interracial couple that was like horror slash comedy that does not sound like
22:28it's gonna break box office records right and it did so it just goes to show that like if studios
22:32can
22:33take a chance on a movie regardless of what it's about that will really it could resonate with anyone you
22:37don't have to necessarily like see yourself in the movie to go see it totally and i'm glad you
22:42mentioned that ari because last year obviously we saw hashtag oscar so white sorry not last year but
22:49we remembered the oscar so white scandal and the social media outcry and so this year the academy
22:54has changed things a bit as obviously last year there were six black acting nominees but i have to say
22:59i am a little hurt because as a latino woman and i'm sure you can feel me on this
23:04it sucks that we're not seeing more latinos being represented in the academy or in hollywood
23:09at all right so all latinos are the minority group that hollywood excludes the most latinos
23:15make up 18 of the us population and 23 of them are frequent moviegoers that is a huge chunk but
23:22according to a recent study only three percent of characters in films speaking parts are latino yeah
23:28that is incredibly crazy imbalance that i think that we need to fix so the only one hispanic
23:34man has ever won best actor and no hispanic woman has ever been named best actress and the last
23:39hispanic actor to win an oscar was penelope cruz for vicky corrigina barcelona which is one of my
23:44favorite movies but it was for a supporting role and although latinos were nominated this year it was
23:51for all things um behind the camera not in front of the camera and i don't know i'm bummed i'm
23:56really
23:56over it i think that you know i have seen obviously we've progressed i think that a lot of african
24:00americans
24:00were nominated but we need to like where are the latinos where are the asians let's keep it going
24:05what do you think about this i mean what's interesting is i actually last year for the
24:09last oscar season wrote a really big deep dive reported feature about how oscar so white does
24:13mean that we also need latinos and asian americans in hollywood as well we've made a little bit of
24:18progress for black folks but now like we also need to look at what diversity means across the board
24:22that was last year and then looking at this year's nominees things are literally exactly the same so we
24:27actually republished my story from last year and all of those statistics because nothing has changed
24:32so one of the things i think is interesting is we're focusing a lot on me too and times up
24:36this
24:36year but we're all of a sudden forgetting about oscar so white and i think we can talk about all
24:40things
24:41we need more women we need more brown people period that's it preach all right i mean i think that
24:45absolutely sums up it's like you they don't have to you don't have to just focus on one cause because
24:49that is a problem you know the fact that there is no more diversity than last year
24:53what else coco was my favorite movie of all time so i hope it takes home speaking of another
24:59favorite movie that i loved that didn't get any love this year was the florida project out of all
25:04of the movies that i've seen nominated it was one of my absolute favorites what did you guys think of
25:07it yeah i liked it i liked it i liked it yeah it was my favorite movie i agree that
25:13i thought it
25:14should have gotten more love but i but i wasn't like blown away by this i think it was very
25:18independent
25:18film vibe i think i did like the social commentary i did like what i talked about poverty and right
25:23thought the acting was incredible but did you know is it going to knock out get out or shape of
25:29water
25:29i don't think so i do have to say i just thought it was so beautifully done william defoe is
25:33actually
25:33nominated for um best actor and so he was the only one from his cast though but the other cast
25:38we have
25:38little brooklyn prince who's the most adorable little girl she's really cute and then alongside um bria
25:43venate who's a newcomer and she's actually typecasted for this role so she's her first ever acting job
25:48was this movie so i just thought the the whole movie everything was so good it was like very
25:52documentary reality style and i just really liked it i thought very beautifully done so that's another
25:55one that i think should have gotten a little more love fair enough my unpopular opinion is about lady
26:00bird i know that everyone really loved this movie and i liked lady bird i thought that it was it
26:04was
26:04like you know everyone can see a little bit of themselves and their mothers in this movie but
26:08all of the love that lady bird got this year i thought it was a little bit overhyped like the
26:12direction
26:13was not the greatest i love that it was a woman director love that it was mostly female cast that's
26:17great
26:18but i just felt like all the hype was like a little bit extra for this movie because i i
26:22don't know
26:23like also like the storyline between her and her mom like i wasn't allowed to talk to my mom like
26:26that
26:26and like just a lot of the different things like i like was like this is a cute movie but
26:30i wasn't
26:30like oh my god like this is me which a lot of people were i think it just came at
26:34a really good
26:35time for sure times up and me too and it was it's a good moment for a female director do
26:41i agree with
26:42you do i think it was the best directing ever no i think like get out had some of the
26:45best directing i've
26:46seen for sure that being said i thought it was a good feel good movie but to be honest with
26:50you
26:50like it hasn't drawn me back i haven't like want to go see it again yeah call me by your
26:53name on the
26:54other hand like get me to the theater now that's what's funny is we were talking about this the
26:57other day is when i think about lady bird i do have fuzzy feelings like i love it but i
27:00can't really
27:01remember exactly what happened in this movie actually but you know what you know what i think is so
27:06special is what i was going to say is the cast and i think you can tell they have a
27:09very special
27:09relationship and that kind of showed on screen so i think people were more drawn to like the very
27:12specific characters yeah sure ronan is like yeah exactly one interesting thing about lady bird too
27:17is that um there was a movie with america ferrera that came out in 2000 called real women have curves
27:22love this and there was a writer who actually pointed out that there's a lot of similarities
27:26between that movie and lady bird and it's not exactly the same plot and maybe this is another shape
27:30of water situation but it's really interesting that greta gerwig never really acknowledged any
27:34inspiration from that movie and there was never really talks about how this latino movie came out a long
27:39time ago and it was actually kind of like a catalyst for a movie like lady bird and no one
27:43really ever
27:44was talking about it and it's also weird that she never even acknowledged it once a writer pointed
27:48it out for sure sketchy all right but guys you know what we're talking about all of these great
27:53oscar nominations and i think it's time to quiz you guys on your oscar knowledge so it is game
27:59time baby i know i was already gonna beat me at this i didn't know that we're gonna be taking
28:03shots and i'm
28:04gonna be drunk and like this is how it's gonna go so the game is called a hot shot lucky
28:08number seven
28:08edition and we have our lovely assistant ally who's gonna bring in a couple of our hot shots
28:12so it's funny oh god oh my god what's happening so with the oscars historically they they kind of
28:20follow a pattern which is really interesting doing some research about it they all go in years of seven
28:24are a lot of the really great movies so 1987 1997 2007 2017 have just had a lot of really
28:32good
28:32nominations sorry so we're continuing our lucky number seven streak today so i have 10 questions five for
28:38each of you okay you have seven seconds to answer on your own and ally will actually be keeping track
28:42of time so if you don't know the answer you can have two face time of friends you guys have
28:47your
28:47friends selected yes we do okay and so if you don't know you can face you have two face i
28:51have seven
28:51seconds do i say within the seven seconds if i want to phone a friend yes you have seven seconds
28:55to
28:55answer and or decide you want to phone a friend okay got it all right so so then if neither
29:01of you you
29:01or your friend know the question or if you don't know the question you have to take a hot shot
29:05now this isn't what you think it's a mix of everything so it can be it some are alcoholic
29:11some are not some are different interesting things okay some are not i'm gonna win so it's fine
29:18okay so and ally will be keeping track of the score too so are you guys ready no but yeah
29:24all right here
29:24we go it's barely it's not even 1 pm yet not even 1 pm get insert on friday okay so

39:16this best picture winner is still noted today it's one of the most best and
39:20most famous movies of all time I'm only gonna say this who could forget the
39:23scene with the hand in the foggy car the hand in the where foggy foggy car foggy
39:34arena prepare to take that shot I just want to say I got this question what's
39:43the answer and nevermind I can't sing the song I can't sing Titanic oh baby all
39:50right Sarah you're up where you alive when the movie came out for sure for sure
39:53okay yo me I don't know I can't what is that unclear poor Serena hmm you don't
40:00remember the scene when they're in the back of the car and she's like that looked
40:04like that was mixed with something yeah what was that Serena gets to go home
40:09actually that Serena's going to take a little a little wait it was orange juice
40:13and tequila so a nice mixture of things can I have a yes water all right I do have to
40:20say that I am very impressed I thought doesn't be a little tougher for you guys so
40:23just ready next game it is going down all right so now that that torture is
40:29over with I am very excited because we've been talking about nominations but
40:33we haven't talked fashion yet so I found just the right girl to come talk to us
40:37about fashion she just so happens to be my real life bestie but she's also our
40:40fashion news writer welcome welcome ready for the Oscars already you look so cute
40:49you guys look ready for the Oscars with your times up pin oh yeah yeah look a
40:53little different to you a little tipsy perhaps from our game
40:56I mean girl you're a champ I don't know that I could have done that oh I think we are
41:01going to pour
41:02you a little drink too why tell us a little bit about what we're talking about all
41:07things fashion so it's interesting this award season we really saw fashion move
41:11into like the front light as like a form of protest like a real form of protest
41:15um why thank you I'm strong we're there oh well did you just get our game here
41:21it's the fashion get on our level girl Serena Serena okay
41:28he's like tell us go on so we watched our favorite celebrities like walk the red carpet and they
41:36didn't do it in their typical like fancy gowns they like made a statement every single time they showed
41:40up at an award show so for the Golden Globes everyone wore black to show solidarity with
41:46times up and like to just bring awareness to the I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm here I'm here
41:52the sexual assault allegations oh no this is not funny the sexual assault allegations and then for
41:59the sags they did not wear a particular color but everyone like you ladies wore their times up pins
42:03at the Grammys they wore their red roses and so on Sunday at the Oscars we don't think there's
42:09going to be any particular color but we do think that the pins are going to be like a major
42:13focus
42:13point just to remind people to donate to the legal fun associated with times up and to draw awareness
42:18to their cause mm-hmm I don't know do you guys think that pins are enough I've been going back
42:22and forth on this like I think pins is like it's a little nice touch but it's not as much
42:26of a
42:26statement as wearing all black but you know what I will say is I love red carpet fashion is probably
42:30one of my favorite things about award shows so I kind of do like the fact that you can still
42:34you
42:35know showcase designers and and showcase you know your personal style but still you know come
42:40together in unity and I think being like kind of like what we were talking about earlier Channing is
42:44being able to still have that platform to talk about things that matter but again still having
42:47one piece of your whole outfit represent something bigger that being said I feel like because they're
42:52wearing a pin it maybe won't be as much of a topic of conversation compared to at the Golden Globes
42:58when everyone was in black right that was at whatever you had to make that point and I love
43:02that too you could still see people self-expression personal style but it was really cool like how are
43:08they gonna wear black how are they gonna take this theme it's kind of like the Met Gala vibes
43:11right like it's like doing that and I don't know I think that I hope that it comes up as
43:15much on the
43:16carpet in conversation as it would if they were all wearing one but I do think it's possible to love
43:21fashion love style and still talk about things that are important I think the emphasis needs to be on the
43:26celebrities and the people who are asking the questions to make sure just because I'm wearing
43:30this fabulous dress doesn't mean that I can't still talk about what's happening and Ari that
43:34brings us full circle to what we're talking about earlier with the way E! covers and choosing to
43:37still have Ryan Seacrest cover which it's just a whole interesting conversation of how we are
43:41going to discuss it I also think though it's so important to acknowledge the designers and the
43:45stylists who bring me it's a big night for them too I don't think it's fair to just be like
43:49oh we're
43:49gonna bypass this this sort of the industry to punish one person great I agree yeah what do you think
43:55about even when people say that wearing something whether it be a pin or a color or a flower isn't
44:02enough is not enough to do it's just like kind of like a way it's almost a passive thing to
44:06do in
44:07terms of continuing I see that argument and I do think there's some validity validity there but I
44:13still think that fashion is a very strong form of protest and even if it's just to draw awareness to
44:18what it is that your pin or whatever the color that you're wearing represents that too is important
44:23yeah I agree and so Channing just on a fun note a lighter note are what trends do you think
44:29that
44:29we're gonna see on this red carpet because Oscars is one of the biggest nights that we see in fashion
44:33one of the biggest and I think we're still gonna see a lot of pantsuits fashion as protest mermaid
44:38dresses and then the sheer like Beyonce gowns everyone still loves to wear those it will be
44:43interesting to see however if anyone wears Marquesa this is a brand that Harvey Weinstein co-owned with
44:47his wife Georgina Chapman and a lot of times he would dress leading ladies of his films in this gown
44:52like in
44:53Marquesa and so we saw it a lot on the red carpet and there's been rumors that he bullied specific
44:58people Jessica Chastain has come out and said that he's strong on care a few times Kerry Washington
45:02also so it'll be interesting to see if anyone feels solidarity with Georgina for kind of being punished for
45:09his actions but then again maybe are we just all taking a step back which I was shocked to hear
45:13that
45:13I didn't realize like because you always just heard of people wearing Marquesa on the red carpet but I
45:18never would have put the two and two together oh yeah I'm not I'm not shocked I mean it sucks
45:23but
45:23like yeah with all the things that he's done with his power and abuse power I'm sure he was like
45:27wear my wife's gown like you're doing that I got you this movie agreed that doesn't surprise me at
45:31all but I don't know if I feel bad for Georgina right in some ways I do but it also
45:35makes me wonder
45:36like did we even like was Marquesa even a great brand before this like would it have been or become
45:42what
45:42it was about Harvey Weinstein no probably not she got it funded by him and then again that takes away
45:46from every other designer who has worked to be in that place who wanted to be represented but
45:49instead it was again an abuse of power exactly definitely like a weird construct like it's
45:54complicated right because on one hand like I want to support her as a woman right and as a designer
45:58she is talented but then it's like well is she who she is because of him right yeah you never
46:05want
46:05to put the blame on the woman or the wife before the man's actions because we don't know what her
46:08involvement was what she did or didn't know and really he has to take ownership for what he did
46:12but at the same time that's kind of like blood money that was funding her yeah so it's a little
46:17it's definitely very complicated yeah it really is anyway thank you so much Channing for having me
46:23my champagne guys we'll be watching you guys can't wait to see all of your fashion coverage
46:28it's gonna be so great okay guys so we are talking all about fashion but one thing we're gonna talk
46:38about too is all of the amazing new movies coming out in 2018 so let's take a look at the
46:45movies
46:45to watch out to watch out for at the Emily had a shot as well so I'm putting that down
46:51and I'm gonna
