00:00Have courage, speak up, you're beautiful.
00:03Now's our time.
00:05Into the light we go.
00:07Hey, I'm Lana Condor and I am here at Refinery29.
00:15It's funny because sometimes people ask me like, what's it like representing the Asian
00:21American experience?
00:23And I'm like, well, the Asian American experience is not one universal shared experience.
00:30I think people get confused.
00:32People think we're all the same.
00:34And I'm like, it's not true.
00:36And one person can't represent everyone's story.
00:39It matters so much because, hello, this is what the real world looks like, people.
00:46And when we see movies and media in general that don't accurately portray what the real
00:55world looks like outside, that is, that's, that's just brainwashing.
01:05Being adopted has, it has affected the way that I approach my career in the sense that my identity
01:15is, is Lana.
01:16It is fully Vietnamese while also being fully American because I grew up with an American
01:24family.
01:24Trying to tell stories where it is accurately representing the Asian American experience
01:31while also representing the American experience because I want to be authentic.
01:37And I, and that's the reason I love Tall the Boys so much was because she is Asian American,
01:43but she's also just a girl next door and she's a universal character, not based on the way
01:50that she looks.
01:51I would like to do a movie about adoption.
01:53I want more people to be open to talking about adoption and sharing that beautiful, their
01:58beautiful stories.
01:59And I also think that there's not a lot of movies about that.
02:02So that'd be cool.
02:03Maybe write it.
02:04Maybe.
02:05Who knows?
02:09Constance Wu.
02:10Sandra Oh.
02:12Brenda Song.
02:13Priyanka Chopra.
02:14Mindy Kaling.
02:16She's so funny.
02:18She's so funny and brilliant.
02:20I really love her writing.
02:22Jenny Han, because I'm obsessed with her.
02:24Olivia Munn is also very smart.
02:27And I, I think that she has a lot of courage and she speaks her mind and that's awesome.
02:34All of these women have really, really just taken their career into their own hands and,
02:39and, and have never been afraid to, um, succeed and to speak out.
02:46And they're all vastly intelligent.
02:51That was the most amazing experience of my whole entire life.
02:55The best was like babies.
02:57The babies that were dressed up as Lara Jean, like, killed me.
03:01I saw one post where it was like a mom dressed up as Lara Jean and then her child dressed
03:05up as Lara Jean.
03:06And she wrote the most beautiful caption about how, um, when she was younger,
03:12she really wished that she had a character that she could dress up as and, and look up to.
03:16And now she's so happy because this look, cause her little girl has someone to dress up as.
03:21I wish I could find it.
03:22I'm sure I saved it, but it would like made me cry cause I could relate and it was awesome.
