00:00We as young people haven't had that stability, so we've done it ourselves instead.
00:06I'm Jam Supernova and I'm a DJ, I'm a broadcaster, I've got my own label.
00:12I work in the music industry, basically.
00:15When I first started DJing, I just stopped dressing up, I guess,
00:19or stopped in my own way being feminine.
00:23I was so concerned with doing a good job
00:26that I just didn't want to think about what I was wearing or have it take away from me as
00:31a DJ.
00:32As I got more comfortable in those spaces, I actually started to think about what I was going to wear.
00:40I normally like to do my own makeup because I've had it done in the past.
00:44I always find that I never look like me.
00:46I kind of always know how far I want to take it.
00:50I want my skin to look glowing.
00:53I like a lot of highlighter.
00:55I'm wearing this gold in my eyes for as long as I can remember.
01:00So when I'm performing on stage, it's actually quite similar.
01:03Sometimes I might put a lip on.
01:05If I was to wear a wig like today, I wouldn't wear a lip colour.
01:08I'd always like a red.
01:09I think because it reminds me of my mum.
01:13I got an internship at BBC and I started in production.
01:16The first thing they asked me on day one,
01:18do you want to work behind the scenes or in front of the scenes?
01:20I was like in front.
01:22So I was very clear with my ambition.
01:25I definitely would describe radio as like my nucleus.
01:29And I think maybe partly that's because that's all I ever wanted.
01:35The most rewarding part of the job is the feedback that we get and the community that we build.
01:40It's kind of almost like having a family that you don't know is there.
01:45I've been DJing for about four or five years.
01:49My mentor was like, well, if you want to be a specialist presenter,
01:53then you're going to need to DJ as well, otherwise people won't take you seriously.
01:56And then he sold me his decks.
01:58I kid you not, I think I might have bought the headphones from the pound shop.
02:04The thing I love most about DJing is the continuous learning of it.
02:07I'm still always learning.
02:08I always get nervous and it always hits me like,
02:11it's like 15 minutes before I'm about to go on.
02:14This year, it's been taking myself out of my comfort zone.
02:17I've had some really amazing euphoric gigs where I've literally just gone where I felt to go.
02:23So Helena is my manager.
02:25She's just basically my other half.
02:27I feel like a lot of things changed for me when she came on board and everything that I wanted
02:31to do
02:31and everything that I wanted to execute.
02:33It was amazing to have someone that believed in that.
02:35And even if it wasn't like, yeah, we can't do it tomorrow,
02:37but how are we going to do it in three weeks?
02:39How are we going to do it in three years, you know?
02:42DIY generation, that is something that I started off as like a radio interview feature.
02:47It's a spotlight basically on amazing young people creating their own careers,
02:52but it's that going against the status quo.
02:54So it was important for me to show people of colour as business owners and as entrepreneurs
02:59and a way of paying it forward.
03:03I run a label called Future Bounce, which is also a music platform.
03:07So I co-run it with my manager.
03:09I think it's going to be a massive part of what's going to define me over the next 10 years.
03:14And I really wanted to have a female producer on the label.
03:17So with Mel, I was like, I think she could be the one.
03:21It's such an amazing feeling to watch someone grow
03:24and just to know that they're going somewhere really special
03:26and we were able to be there at the beginning of their journey.
03:29You wonder what it's going for you when the door is open for you.
03:34My journey in relationships, it's been really like quite special.
03:38I wouldn't have wanted to do it any other way.
03:40And I think that's why the music stands how it does.
03:43The one thing that we really wanted for the label was to be a platform and a springboard.
03:47We want her to go and fly.
03:50Everything that I do comes from my heart.
03:53For me, it's just about longevity and I'm still learning a lot.
