He may be a native Londoner who brought to screen one of England‘s biggest literary heroes, but these days Daniel Radcliffe calls the States his home. He‘s got a place in New York City. He‘s currently starring in his third Broadway show, a revival of Martin McDonagh‘s The Cripple of Inishmaan. And, he‘s also become quite the avid student of the stars-and-stripes religion known as American football. Radcliffe followed the recent NFL draft and was thrilled to see Missouri‘s Michael Sam make history when he became the first openly gay player to be drafted. Sam was picked up by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round, and as Radcliffe told us when we spoke to him for his new movie, What If, it shouldn‘t have taken so long.

Check out the trailer for Radcliffe's new movie, What If, out this August. And, stay tuned for the second part of our interview with the star.

00:06Daniel, it's good to see you and meet you.
00:08Thank you. Nice to meet you as well.
00:09I saw you on Seth Meyers a couple of weeks ago
00:12and mentioning what a big American football fan has become.
00:15Yeah. Which is great.
00:16Yes.
00:16I am as well.
00:17And I've got to ask you what your feelings are
00:20about the historic moment of Michael Sam.
00:22I just have a huge amount of admiration for him.
00:25And, you know, because I think as well because I do a lot of interviews
00:30and I had the luxury of growing up doing interviews
00:33and so you have like a sense of media training in what isn't.
00:36And, you know, I assume he has never done that.
00:38And, you know, he's just brilliant in interviews
00:40because he never allows himself to be portrayed as a victim
00:43or as special in some way.
00:44He's really, you know, I mean, we can argue all you like about the fact
00:49that the last six years the person that won that SEC Defensive Player of the Year award
00:53has been drafted no lower than I think 16th or 17th overall.
00:56Yeah.
00:56And he went 240-something.
00:58But you know what?
00:59He made a team.
01:01And now, like, the rest of the country are all just going,
01:04OK, now you have to, like, now we're all just rooting for him to have an amazing season, I think.
01:08And it was a historic moment.
01:09And just like, you know, that takes some guts.
01:13Yeah, absolutely.
