Un trabajador de supermercado de Red Baron en Michigan, identificado como Walt Z, se convirtió en protagonista de un video viral después de que un influencer le hiciera una falsa broma con Apple Pay mientras reponía productos.  El joven simuló quitarle 10 dólares y lo grabó entre risas; el empleado, padre de cuatro hijos, reaccionó con molestia y sinceridad: "Mi vida es lo suficientemente difícil. Mis hijos se fueron a dormir sin mí. Probablemente tú ganes dinero con esto. Yo ni siquiera puedo pagar mi hipoteca".  Sus palabras generaron una ola de solidaridad: una campaña en GoFundMe creada por Luke Oakenshield, quien no lo conocía, superó los 9 mil dólares (con meta de 13 mil) para ayudarlo a mantener a su familia y protegerlo ante un posible despido.  El influencer borró el video y desactivó sus cuentas identificadas como @thea.tiveworld tras las críticas.  La empresa confirmó que el incidente ocurrió en agosto, que el trabajador sigue en su puesto y que fue nombrado "empleado del mes".
