A Canberra grandmother has detailed a frightening near miss when winds whipped up by a helicopter landing at the Canberra hospital, sent a metal sign flying into the air landing only centimetres from her. It is one of several near misses that have been reported at the rooftop helideck which came into operation in August 2024.

00:03Grozdana Barisic loves spending time in her garden, but living across the road from Canberra
00:07Hospital's helipad has left her scared of doing just that.
00:11It's not a good life for me, it's just, I work hard enough, live long enough and work
00:20hard enough to have my peaceful life, but I don't have it.
00:24The 80-year-old grandmother was working in her front yard in June last year, when she
00:28says a road work sign was whipped into the air as a helicopter was landing.
00:38After the sign narrowly missed hitting her, she now takes cover every time she hears a
00:44helicopter.
00:44The noises of the helicopter make me shake and make me think about what I've experienced
00:51that day and that's why I try to hide.
00:55It's not the only incident involving the helipad at the hospital.
00:59Documents released by Canberra Health Services show also in June 2025, a fabric fire hose reel
01:05cover came flying off during a take-off, narrowly missing the aircraft's rotors before falling
01:11into an adjacent courtyard.
01:13The month before, a 50-centimeter piece of an aerial was dislodged from its bracket.
01:17And in October 2024, a piece of cladding came loose from a building below the heli deck,
01:23forcing landings and take-offs to be halted while repairs were made.
01:27In a statement, a spokesperson said Canberra Health Services takes the safety and security
01:32of its helipad seriously.
01:34The statement went on to say they work with relevant teams to identify and respond to all
01:38safety and operational concerns and have taken proactive steps to address every issue raised.
