On 1 November 2026, the sea off Odisha went quiet by law. For seven months, fishing is banned around Gahirmatha, the world's largest rookery of the Olive Ridley sea turtle — and everyone is waiting for the same answer. After a year when the turtles did not come, will they come back?

Between 5 and 10 March 2025, 606,933 Olive Ridley turtles nested at Gahirmatha, on Nasi-1, Nasi-2 and Eakakulanasi. Then, in 2026, the beach stayed empty: thousands had gathered offshore in February, but most dispersed without coming ashore. It was the first skip in twelve years, since 2014. Just down the coast, Rushikulya did nest in 2026 — 205,293 turtles between 14 and 17 March — so this was not a year when turtles vanished from Odisha. It was a year when the greatest rookery of all stayed silent.

This short honest film follows the ban that is now in force, 1 November 2026 to 31 May 2027, across the 1,435 sq km Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary, with 14 turtle protection camps and Turtle Excluder Devices on trawlers — and the human cost behind it: in the last full season, 354 fishermen were arrested and 39 vessels seized for illegal fishing inside the sanctuary. Why the turtles skipped Gahirmatha in 2026 is still unknown; coastal erosion, climate change, illegal fishing, untimely rain and ocean noise have only been suggested, never established. The eggs, if they come, are expected in March 2027.

Important honesty note: this film contains NO genuine Olive Ridley footage, and it does not claim to. Turtle scenes are labelled on screen as "ILLUSTRATIVE RECREATION — NOT ACTUAL OLIVE RIDLEY FOOTAGE". The coast, trawler and sunrise footage is generic environment footage, not presented as Gahirmatha. Generic and green turtle clips were excluded, not presented as Olive Ridleys.

00:00On the 1st of November, 2026, the sea off Odisha went quiet by law.
00:05For seven months, fishing is banned around Gehir Matha,
00:09the world's largest rookery of the olive ridley sea turtle.
00:12And everyone is waiting for the same answer.
00:15After a year when the turtles did not come, will they come back?
00:20The olive ridley is the smallest of all sea turtles.
00:23Its scientific name is Lepidoculus olivacea.
00:27An adult is usually 62 to 70 centimeters long and weighs 35 to 45 kilograms.
00:35It is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN red list,
00:38and it is a Schedule I species under India's Wildlife Protection Act.
00:43What happens here is called Arribata, meaning arrival by sea.
00:49Tens of thousands of females come ashore together over just a few days to lay eggs,
00:54usually 100 to 120 each.
00:58After 45 to 50 days, the hatchlings crawl to the sea.
01:02Between the 5th and the 10th of March 2025,
01:08606,933 turtles nested at Gehir Matha on Nasi 1, Nasi 2, and Ika Kula Nasi.
01:16Then, in 2026, the beach stayed empty.
01:20In February, thousands had gathered offshore after mating,
01:24then most dispersed without coming ashore.
01:27Sporadic nesting was reported in pockets,
01:30but the mass nesting never happened.
01:32It was the first skip in 12 years,
01:34after skips in 2014, 2008, 2002, 1998, 1997, 1988, and 1982.
01:45Just down the coast, at Rushikulia,
01:48turtles did nest in 2026.
01:51Between the 14th and the 17th of March,
01:54205,293 turtles laid eggs there,
01:59far below Rushikulia's record of around 9 loch in 2025.
02:052026 was a year when the greatest rookery stayed silent.
02:09Now, from the 1st of November, 2026,
02:12to the 31st of May, 2027,
02:16fishing is banned in and around the Gehir Matha Marine Sanctuary,
02:20up to 20 kilometers into the Bay of Bengal.
02:24The sanctuary covers 1,435 square kilometers,
02:29from Hukitola to Damra,
02:31and was declared a marine sanctuary in 1997.
02:35Fourteen turtle protection camps have been set up,
02:38four offshore, on Madali,
02:41Sasanapada,
02:42Ekkakula,
02:43and Babubali.
02:45Trawlers must fit turtle excluder devices,
02:48escape hatches that let a trapped turtle swim out of a net.
02:51A ban that protects turtles also stops people from working.
02:55In the last full season,
02:57between the 1st of November, 2025,
03:00and the 31st of May, 2026,
03:03officials arrested 354 fishermen
03:06and seized 39 vessels for illegal fishing inside the sanctuary.
03:12Fishing unions have, in past seasons,
03:14demanded alternative livelihoods in compensation.
03:18Conservationists have urged continued cooperation.
03:20And why did the turtles skip Gehir Matha in 2026?
03:26The honest answer is,
03:27no one knows.
03:29Coastal erosion,
03:30climate change,
03:31illegal fishing,
03:33untimely rain,
03:34and ocean noise
03:35have all been suggested.
03:37None has been established as the cause.
03:39That is why March 2027 matters so much.
03:43The turtles begin arriving in November for mating.
03:46The eggs,
03:48if they come,
03:48are expected in March.
03:50The ban can only buy quiet water and time.
03:54It cannot order a turtle ashore.
03:57This winter,
03:58the beach is waiting,
04:00guarded and empty.
04:02In March,
04:03we will find out whether the wait was worth it.
04:05This is Animalvised.
