Forthing T5 EVO looks like a budget Chinese SUV trying very hard to channel a Lamborghini Urus, but the real story is what happens once the drive begins. This compact crossover is positioned against the Kia Sportage, Renault Austral, Toyota RAV4 and Volkswagen Tiguan, yet it costs far less than many rivals. The review digs into the design, the Mitsubishi-sourced 1.5 turbo petrol, the slow DCT gearbox, the vague steering and the surprisingly firm opinions the car inspires.

Inside, the T5 EVO mixes generous equipment with awkward software: a 360 camera that appears automatically at low speed, wireless Android Auto via USB dongle, slow infotainment responses, poor translation, and plenty of reflections on the screens and windshield. There is good rear space, a flat floor, large storage areas and a practical boot, but also weak soundproofing, limited driver assistance and a cabin that feels built to a price.

For viewers searching for a Chinese SUV review, Forthing T5 EVO test drive, compact crossover comparison, or a real-world car review of a Mitsubishi-powered SUV, this is a detailed look at the good, the bad and the oddly cheap-feeling details. It also fits searches for budget SUV reviews, Chinese car reviews and European market first impressions.

00:00what's this car it looks like an illegitimate child of the lamborghini urus and the mitsubishi
00:06eclipse cross and you've never heard about it this is the four thing t5 a compact suv which
00:12costs as little as a b crossover why is it so cheap let's find out
00:31i also recorded a comparison of the four thing t5 and the new volkswagen tiguan
00:37channel members get to watch this video early and without ads
01:22what is for think the brand belongs to dong feng one of china's top car makers
01:27in 2023 dong feng produced three and a half million vehicles under various brands in china
01:33it manufactures cars for kia nissan and stellantis its own brands include dfsk
01:41alus i'm sorry i don't know how to read that voya or saris and a couple of other brands that
01:47i don't
01:48recognize the logos of and so we arrive at 14 which was founded in 2001 as feng hing i hope
01:56i'm
01:56pronouncing it correctly in 2024 the brand plans to sell over 100 000 units and here in poland we
02:02initially get the t5 crossover and the u-tour minivan in terms of dimensions 14 t5 plays in the
02:10same league as the kia sportage renault austral toyota rav4 or volkswagen tiguan it's also slightly
02:16smaller than the beijing 5 the design is striking for better or worse if the beijing 5 or vw tiguan
02:25are
02:25too vanilla for you and the cupra formentor and the tiguan are too expensive then the 14 t5 could be
02:32what you're looking for there's a lot going on in the front the bonnet has a sharp point like the
02:38lamborghini urus there's also a crest with some cat-like animal just under the bonnet are the day
02:45running lights lower down is a dark grille part of which is fake carbon and part piano black more
02:53red accents at the bottom and on the sides are vertical headlight clusters they're emphasized
02:59on the side by chrome lines as i said there is a lot going on while the front end is
03:06interesting the
03:07profile is from the book the crossover anthology 2007-2024 nothing to see here let's go to the
03:15rear whoa the main feature in the rear is the light bar running across the entire width of the car
03:22the bumper has some dark plastic element in it under which there is more red and two double exhaust tips
03:28they are functional though unnecessary as you'll find out as soon as you start driving
03:53powering the t5 is what i call the china classic it's a 1.5 liter four-pot turbo petrol of
03:59some sort
04:00producing 170 ish horsepower apparently this one is a mitsubishi engine despite not having start and
04:08stop system it somehow complies with euro 6 regulations while the manufacturer doesn't provide
04:14official fuel economy figures some sources quote 6.6 liters per 100 kilometers combined i guess
04:24driving very gently i managed to get the fuel consumption below 8 liters per 100 kilometers
04:30however in the city and at motorway speeds i soon hit high nines and i see no chance of the
04:37result
04:37improving anytime soon claimed 0 to 100 kilometers per hour time is 9 seconds i got 9.7 both in
04:45sport and
04:45normal mode soundproofing isn't great and that's especially true at motorway speeds when i really had to
04:51turn the volume up to listen to music or podcasts i also don't understand how some chinese brands
05:02managed to obtain european homologation for cars which clearly do not have any of the mandatory safety
05:09features such as traffic sign recognition lane keeping assist autonomous emergency braking i suspect some
05:17clients will be more than happy to turn to chinese brands exactly for this reason however without these
05:24systems i can feel exactly how vague the steering is the t5 goes in the general direction i pointed in
05:33kind of sort of but i have to keep correcting the line and in the corners it turns out the
05:40front may look
05:41like an urus but the t5 runs wide it's more show than go so maybe the 14 t5 is better
05:50suited for the city in the sense
05:52that there are no fast corners and you don't realize how poor the soundproofing is yes in the city you
05:58only
05:59notice how bad the seven speed dct is it may be made by magna but clearly to a price point
06:05so a fast
06:07three point turn as i know quick kick down upon acceleration nope slowing down and then speeding up
06:13again no no no not really the gearbox feels as if the cogs are corresponding using retired carrier pigeons
06:21with dementia visibility is terrible wing mirrors and a pillars converge to create blind spots big enough
06:31to conceal cars rear visibility is average but the rear view mirror with day and night function is of some
06:37cheap sort and in day mode i see ghost reflections both of the rear seats and through the panoramic roof
06:44but there is more the screens on the dashboard are reflected in the windscreen at night and during the day
06:51it's as if the car was designed with old school analog instruments in mind and then someone added
06:57screens without considering the implications and i don't know according to what norms the headlights are
07:02set but even at the lowest level the beam seems to go above other cars which leads me to assume
07:08i'm
07:09dazzling other drivers and not in a good way
07:19on the plus side the suspension evens out bumps well and problems with visibility can be partially
07:24overcome with a 360 camera which comes on automatically below 35 kilometers per hour when you
07:30turn on the indicator this feature can be disabled but it will require some detective work and perhaps
07:36linguistic skills because the menu logic and the quality of translation leave a lot to be desired
07:58i often hear that the chinese have long overtaken european car makers in terms of software
08:04perhaps it's the software in the most expensive electric cars because the budget petrol vehicles get
08:10infotainment like on those cheap android tablets you could buy in discount stores despite their lower
08:16price they never conquered the market camera settings are only available when the camera is on
08:23they aren't in the car settings menu there is no sat nav so the central display is mainly for settings
08:30as long as you understand what the chinese to english translator meant
08:34in order to save the clients from installing the chinese car bitlink mirroring app the polish importer
08:40offers a usb dongle which works as a wireless android auto interface it works mostly but the connection
08:48sometimes drops and the sound has to go through the car's bluetooth system and the voice quality over
08:53bluetooth is subpar the infotainment system doesn't do much but it's slow anyway it can take a couple of
09:01seconds for the system to react to temperature change or volume input by the way there are physical
09:07volume buttons on the steering wheel and how else can you control the volume well there is an unmarked
09:14pull down menu on the screen
09:19i think the 14 infotainment system is best summed up with this ingenious and simple solution it's a factory
09:28attachment point for those air vent mounted phone cradles and things as far as i'm concerned all
09:35car makers should copy this and bring back physical ac controls while they're at it
09:41the driver's display focuses on the tire pressure this is the most prominent readout and i couldn't
09:47find a way to change what's displayed in the middle i'm not saying there is no way to change it
09:51but the logic of
09:52the chinese software developers exceeded my perception other than that there is nothing
09:57really surprising here there are large door pockets small storage on the center console with a usb a
10:04port a cubby under the console with another usb a port and a 12 volt outlet cup holders deep and
10:12air
10:12cooled storage under the armrest and a huge glove box the seats are okay in the sense that i didn't
10:19get a
10:19back ache after a couple of hours driving they are electrically adjustable but there is no seat
10:25memory function and they offer virtually no lateral support did i mention the plastics stink to the
10:33point that it irritates my throat also worth mentioning is that the doors cover the sills so
10:40you won't get your trousers dirty getting in and out in the back there is good legroom and headroom
10:46the floor is flat there's an ac vent and another usb a port there are pockets in the backs of
10:54the front seats
10:54and some hooks the front passenger seat can be controlled from the rear and there is a side pocket in
11:01the driver's seat just right for a small bottle of hand sanitizer there's an armrest with cup holders
11:07the door pockets are large there is no ski hatch and the backrest angle is not adjustable
11:12also the rear seat doesn't slide according to the specification the 14 t5 has 480 liters boot capacity
11:23in five seat configuration and almost 1500 with the seats folded in the back the backrest splits 60 40
11:30realistically 480 liters could be achieved without the mini spare what you see here is about 400 liters
11:36the cargo cover doesn't fit under the false floor there are no shopping bag hooks or even anchor points
11:43to secure the luggage what you see is what you get i don't know how forthing is going to approach
11:51western europe
11:52in poland we already have 20 dealers and there are plans for more in 2025 the importer also claims to
11:59have
11:59secured a parts depot to facilitate fast service and repairs 14 t5 costs just above 30 000 euro in poland
12:09plus around 1200 euro for the paint i've seen it offered for about the same price in italy and germany
12:16is it available in your market
12:20after several positive encounters with chinese cars i'm disappointed with the 14 t5 it reminded me
12:27why a few years ago we laughed at chinese automotive industry this is a knockoff and compared to other
12:33better chinese cars it's not even particularly cheap and what do you think about forthing and
12:40other chinese brands what chinese cars are available in your market let me know in a comment section below
