00:00Tesla X'd the Model X, which leaves Tesla buyers with a large family a little squeezed
00:06for room.
00:06Where are they going to put everybody?
00:08Yeah, you can get a Model Y with an optional third row, but it's a pretty small third row,
00:14and that is not a lot of breathing room.
00:16To fill the gap left by the Model X, Tesla is bringing over a model that's already been
00:21available in most of Asia, the Tesla Model YL.
00:25The L stands for long, as in wheelbase.
00:28We're here in California with a Tesla Model YL Premium Launch Edition to see what's so
00:35special about a stretch Tesla.
00:42The Tesla Model YL is seven inches longer than the Model Y, and six of that is in the wheelbase
00:48right here in the cabin.
00:49That should equal noticeably more room for second and third row passengers.
00:53One thing that's noticeable just from the outside if you have any familiarity with a Model Y
00:58Model Y is this window, this door, they're long.
01:01It is much longer than on a Model Y.
01:03It's also a smidge taller, about two inches, and that should mean more headroom.
01:08The Launch Edition, which this is, starts at around $62,000, and it includes some special
01:14badges and puddle lamps that have the little Launch Edition Starburst.
01:18Very cool.
01:19You also get a choice of paint color and wheels.
01:22Perhaps more importantly, you get a free year of supervised full self-driving, connectivity,
01:29and supercharging.
01:30A year of free supercharging is actually a pretty sweet deal because Tesla's supercharger
01:35network keeps growing, and it is super easy to find a station.
01:39You won't have to spend a bunch of time once you get there either because Tesla says that
01:43you can add 164 miles of range in just 15 minutes.
01:51Normally we would start in the driver's seat, but since the big news with the YL is the big
01:56third row, we're going to work back to front.
01:59Starting here with the aluminum tailgate and its integrated spoiler.
02:03Also integrated is the brake light, that's right here, instead of hanging down and impeding
02:08headspace.
02:09Before we get to headspace, let's talk about cargo space.
02:12So at first glance, this might not look that impressive.
02:17You're like, where am I going to put all my stuff, Alana?
02:19Well, okay, there is 15 cubic feet of cargo space here because there is a secret, and that
02:26secret is magnets.
02:28No, the magnets are not a secret.
02:30You are allowed to know about the magnets.
02:31The secret is that there is a huge bin, under tray bin here.
02:35So you can put a whole suitcase under here, and then more suitcases up here.
02:40Or if you're grocery shopping, there's plenty of room for your groceries, and there's these
02:45nice, very deep bins here on the side, which I love if you're just buying one or two bags,
02:51you don't want them to roll around, or maybe you're buying a potted plant.
02:55For someone that you love, who needs a potted plant, buy everybody flowers.
02:59Anyway, good.
03:00Good for storing flowers.
03:02And that is with all the seats up.
03:04Let's see how much space we've got with them down.
03:09Bloop!
03:10Okay.
03:12So fast.
03:13Nice little buttons.
03:14One press.
03:15You don't have to hold them.
03:16They go right down.
03:17They fold the headrest for you.
03:19And then, even more impressive, I mean, you can tell I'm a person who gets really excited
03:24about folding seats.
03:25Have you ever been in a car that has, you know, automated or electric folding seats, and you
03:31go to put down the second row, but you have a really tall person, like my videographer Alex
03:36here, who has left their seat way back in the front, and then it popped, rams right into
03:41it, and like, stupid, you've got to move things around.
03:44I want you to watch what happens when I fold the passenger side second row.
03:52Did you see that?
03:53Did you see how the seat moved out of the way and then moved back?
03:56I think that is really cool.
03:58And I have got to give props to whichever engineer thought of how you needed that and then made
04:04it work.
04:04Good job.
04:06By the way, with all of this folded down, you have almost 90 cubic feet of space.
04:15So we've got a lot of room here now.
04:17If you are the kind of person who likes car camping, you could put one of those big inflatable
04:23mattresses in here and have a nap if that's a thing that you like to do.
04:26Personally, I like hotels.
04:27This car would drive you to a very nice hotel, and I recommend that.
04:31But you could do the mattress thing, whatever.
04:33More importantly when talking about cargo area is people like it to be flat, right?
04:38Like if you are putting a piece of furniture or something in here, you don't want it wobbling
04:43around.
04:44And right now, if you look at this cargo bed, it's not flat, but there is a solution.
04:49You take this cover off and just whole thing comes out.
04:53And then there are these little plastic guys here and they pop up.
04:58So we're going to pop them up.
05:00And then you flip this over and you set it down.
05:07And now this is flatter against the seat.
05:12So if you were trying to put, say, a dresser or just, again, plants that you need to buy,
05:20you can have them in here and they won't all be sort of tipping over to the back of the
05:23car.
05:24It's actually easier to get into the Model YL than the Model X because it has traditional
05:33doors so you don't have to duck.
05:35And it's easier than the standard Model Y because the door opening is bigger by two inches.
05:41And that's great if you're helping elderly relatives in and out or if you're scooping
05:46little kids out of their car seats.
05:48It's really nice to have that space to maneuver.
05:49Getting into the third row does require a little bit of gymnastics.
05:54These seats, the second row, do not fold out of the way.
06:00And you cannot get a bench seat for the reason of them not folding out of the way.
06:05So you have to kind of come through the middle and there is a step up.
06:09But once you're here, that's pretty good.
06:13I'm going to say right from the start, despite the marketing about this being a big third
06:20row seat, I wouldn't call this a big third row.
06:23I would say that for little kids, maybe teens up to about my size, I'm 5'3", this is fine.
06:32But anybody taller or a whole lot broader is not going to be super comfortable in here.
06:39So if you're planning to carry the football team in your YL, I don't know, maybe rethink
06:45it.
06:46But if it's an emergency, this works.
06:48The seats are pretty comfortable.
06:50Like they're padded and they have a nice recline, which is great because a lot of times in third
06:55rows it's really up and down and it's quite uncomfortable to be there.
07:00One thing I was surprised about is that the windows, which look huge from the outside,
07:05are really small from the inside.
07:07So if I was on a road trip in the back seat, I'd be like, oh man, I don't have
07:10a view.
07:11Whatever.
07:12I can handle it for a small trip.
07:13I want you to look at leg space and head space.
07:16Obviously a lot of space here for me and if so, I could be, let's see, this much taller
07:24before I was uncomfortable.
07:26And then leg space.
07:28So the seats right now, the second row are not all the way forward and they're not all
07:33the way back.
07:34They're kind of in the middle.
07:35I can put my legs directly in front of me and I do have enough space, but they're at a
07:44funny
07:44angle because there isn't really any foot room.
07:48Like the seat attachment is kind of right where I would put my foot.
07:52So you sort of sit straddling the seat rail.
07:55So even though I don't think that this is a super roomy third row,
08:00I am impressed with a couple of details that Tesla added.
08:04Here we've got air vents, which are really nice right now because I am sweaty and there are flies
08:09all over the place and there's cup holders and there's even phone charging right here,
08:14which is really cool because you're sitting in the third row, your phone's dead.
08:19You got to like hand it up to somebody in the front to charge it.
08:22And then you're like, my phone, my phone, I'm suffering anxiety from being separated.
08:27So you can charge it right here, sitting on your nice little seat, just tucked away in your third row
08:33cave.
08:34All right, there is a lot to love about this second row.
08:38Captain's chairs, they're super adjustable.
08:40They recline really far back.
08:42I've got tons of room and I'm in the middle position.
08:45You've got vents right here so you can direct all your cool air right at your face.
08:51You've got charging ports in front of you, got map pockets, really nice materials,
08:57much nicer than I normally associate with Tesla.
09:00There's like this tweed up here, a faux suede, this faux leather.
09:05It's really nice and soft.
09:06And that's even on the back of the second row.
09:09So even the third row passengers can enjoy the aesthetic choices.
09:14There's one thing I have to make fun of though.
09:16And Tesla was so proud of it when they announced it.
09:20And that is right now you're probably like, where are you going to put your arm?
09:23Oh, your arm is just, what do I do with my hands?
09:26Well, you need an armrest, right? And this car has powered armrests.
09:31So let's initiate the powered armrest.
09:39I mean, come on.
09:41If this was just like a little click and press,
09:43I would have been resting my arm comfortably like 10 minutes ago.
09:47But that is a small complaint.
09:49And it is cool that the armrests tuck away because it does make it much more comfortable
09:53to get into the third row.
09:55As you would expect from a Tesla, there's plenty of infotainment options.
09:59You've got a eight inch touchscreen back here.
10:01You can control climate control, heated and ventilated seats in the middle row.
10:06And did I mention that there are heated seats in the third row?
10:09I just think that's so thoughtful.
10:10There's also, you can watch movies.
10:12You can control the music, you know, all the things that you use a screen for
10:17right here in front of you in the middle row.
10:19One of the things that's cool about electric cars is that if it is fully charged,
10:25it can be used to charge something else.
10:27But that is not available on every electric car.
10:30And the YL is the first Tesla, I believe, besides the Cybertruck,
10:35to offer the ability to charge, say, an electric bike or the lights at your campsite
10:41or run your house if your power goes out from the car.
10:45So it's sort of power can go in, power can go out.
10:48It is a really cool option.
10:50And now you can do it without having to buy a Cybertruck.
10:53That is not what cars are for.
10:55Let's go drive it.
11:03When we first started reviewing Teslas, I was not a fan of the driving dynamics.
11:09They were very fast.
11:10I will always admit that they were very quick, very fast, but I felt like the braking,
11:15the steering, it didn't really match the acceleration.
11:17I felt like they rode really rough and I was never very excited to be assigned a Tesla review.
11:26I'm going to have to admit, this YL rides really nice and it is pretty fun to drive.
11:32It's plenty quick and it handles really nice.
11:36Brakes really well.
11:37I think some of the best brakes that I've experienced in a Tesla.
11:41Plus it has a lot of adjustments.
11:44So if you're a person who likes one pedal driving, you can turn on really heavy regenerative braking.
11:50If you don't like it, you can turn it on the lower setting and then it isn't quite as dramatic,
11:55which I think is much nicer for passengers.
11:57Most of what's going on under this car, in this car, is really similar, if not identical, to the Model
12:04Y.
12:04But there is one major difference and I think that it is making a difference in the driving experience.
12:11And that is that the YL has a new adaptive suspension that is both a tune and hardware
12:18so that it can adjust quicker to changing road conditions and keep the car level.
12:24It absorbs a lot more of the bumps and the shocks.
12:28And so you're really not feeling a lot of up and down and a lot of side to side.
12:33I think it's great.
12:34You know, I remember when electric cars first came out and everybody was getting queasy
12:39because they were just like, oh, we're not prepared for it to be this quick and to be this rolly.
12:43And this is not like that at all.
12:46I do have one driving complaint and that is I know you're supposed to just let Tesla's drive themselves.
12:55They do a great job of that in the city, but we're on this super curvy road right now.
13:00And the sort of lane keep assist program that Tesla has is not up to the task here.
13:08And turning it off is multiple steps in the screen to steal a line from a friend of mine
13:15who wrote about a similar problem.
13:18I need to have the lane keep assist on so that I can go into the menu
13:23to find out how to turn off the lane keep assist.
13:26You know, I really wish that was just like one one click somewhere.
13:32And you might be like, whatever.
13:34So you you turn it off.
13:35But no, you have to turn it off every single time you get in the car.
13:38Like even if you just stopped to pick up a friend or something
13:42and you never even turn the car off, it will still turn itself back on.
13:45You have to turn it off again.
13:47So that is a big whine from me.
13:50You can tell me in the comments how I'm being a big giant baby, but I don't like it.
13:56And I wish that they would fix it.
14:00All right, let's get back to the damping dynamics because that's big news.
14:05So not only does this car ride really smoothly and much.
14:11It's softer than what I normally associate with a Tesla, but not in a rolly, tippy way.
14:18Like it just is soaking up all of the all of the road noise, both physically and also literally
14:25in that it has more NVH and sound deadening and stuff.
14:28So you're really not hearing very much.
14:30There's like no wind noise, which is really impressive.
14:33But also there is a setting so that you can adjust who's getting the most, the ideal comfort setting.
14:42Right now I am in balanced ride and handling priority.
14:45And that means that the ideal comfort, the ideal suspension settings, everything is
14:53intended for those of us in the front seat.
14:55Like it feels perfect for us.
14:56It's soaking up all the bumps here and it feels really great.
14:59But if I wanted, you know, my whiny kids in the back, no, I love them.
15:05If I wanted everybody in the back to be a little bit more comfortable
15:08and to have it really be about them, I can switch it to rear comfort.
15:13And I'm telling you, I can notice this already.
15:16It makes it a little bit more jittery in the front.
15:19Like I'm feeling more, but in the back, they're getting just a little bit more damping
15:26and they're feeling just a little bit less of what's happening on the road.
15:30So, I mean, that's cool.
15:31I suppose ideally you'd have it both ways, but what do I know?
15:36I'm not a ride engineer.
15:43Well, um, car's driving itself and it's doing a pretty good job.
15:48Pretty soon it's going to be able to review itself.
15:50And then I don't know what I'm going to do.
15:52If this is something that's of interest to you, you got a family, you want a Tesla,
15:58Model YL goes on sale in September.
16:07I've heard all these questions in.
16:07I just told you Roger that to be successful.
16:07But dieta, the people who don't want me to do?
