00:00From the last man to fight in the revolution, to the last guy to die in the White House,
00:05this is every presidential last. And after you see some of these, you'll be glad we never saw
00:11him again. Let's start in October of 1794, when farmers in western Pennsylvania were tarring and
00:17feathering tax men over a new tax on whiskey, in what they called the Whiskey Rebellion. And
00:23nobody knew yet if a president could even enforce a law past the mountains. So George Washington
00:29called up 13,000 militia, climbed on his horse, and rode out with the army himself. So every
00:36farmer out there would see the president at the front of the line. But the rebels scattered before
00:41he got there. And after that, America got a real army with real generals. So nobody needed the
00:47president riding along anymore, making George Washington our last president to lead an army
00:52personally. But the next last came from the strangest rule in the Constitution. Because the
00:58founders didn't plan on political parties. So the runner-up automatically became your
01:03vice president, even if he was your sworn enemy. So when John Adams won in 1796, his VP was the
01:11guy he just beat, Thomas Jefferson. And in 1800, Jefferson beat him, making Adams the last and
01:18only president to lose his job to his own vice president. But that rule is also how Jefferson
01:25got into the White House in the first place. Because in 1796, he ran for president against
01:31Adams and lost by three electoral votes, which made him the vice president. Then in 1800, Jefferson
01:38tied with his own running mate, Aaron Burr, and it took the House 36 ballots to eventually pick TJ.
01:44Then in 1804, the 12th Amendment gave the VP his own line on the ballot, making Jefferson the last guy
01:52who ever got into that building by losing. But James Madison outlived that whole room.
01:58Because all summer in 1787, while the Constitutional Convention met behind locked doors,
02:04Madison sat up front writing down every argument. But he refused to publish any of it while another
02:10delegate was alive. Because he didn't want anybody left to argue with his version. So he waited.
02:16And on June 28, 1836, he died at 85, the last living man who signed the Constitution.
02:24Talk about controlling the narrative, sir. But James Monroe is the last president nobody ran against.
02:31And that's because the other party destroyed itself. Because the Federalists spent the War of 1812
02:38fighting their own country's war effort. And in December of 1814, their leaders met in secret
02:44at the Hartford Convention to talk about pulling New England out of it. But weeks later, America won
02:50at New Orleans. So a country throwing a victory party found out one of its own parties had tried to
02:55quit. And they never recovered. By 1820, the Federalists didn't even run a candidate. So Monroe took 231
03:04electoral votes. And no president has run unopposed since. But the good feelings didn't last four more
03:11years. Because in 1824, four men ran. And every single one of them was a Democratic Republican,
03:17the only party America had left. So they split the vote and nobody won a majority, sending the choice
03:24to the House. And Andrew Jackson had won the most votes. But Henry Clay was Speaker of the House.
03:30So he threw his support to John Quincy Adams, who then made Clay his Secretary of State.
03:35So Jackson screamed corrupt bargain. And Adams became the last president picked by the House.
03:42But Jackson came back in 1828 and won big. And he's the last president who fought in the
03:48Revolutionary War because he joined at age 13. But his biggest last is actually about money.
03:55Because Jackson hated debt. So he sold off millions of acres of Western land,
04:00killed the National Bank, and blocked nearly every spending bill. And in January of 1835,
04:07it worked, making Jackson the last president to take our debt to zero. And it lasted about a year.
04:14Then the economy crashed, and America has been in debt every day since. Sir, maybe it's time to
04:21make a comeback? And Jackson handed it all to his own Vice President, Martin Van Buren,
04:26who grew up somewhere that didn't sound like America at all. Because Van Buren was born in
04:31Kinderhoek, New York, an old Dutch farming town. So Dutch is what he spoke at home his whole life.
04:37And English was his second language, picked up at the village schoolhouse, making him the last
04:43president who had to learn English on the way up. And the man who finally beat Van Buren was born
04:48on
04:49February 9th, 1773, on a Virginia plantation that still belonged to King George III. So William Henry
04:57Harrison was born a British subject. And three years later, his own father signed the Declaration
05:02of Independence that turned his boy into an American. So he's the last president born under a kink.
05:09And he only lasted 31 days. So his VP, John Tyler, took over. And within six months,
05:15his own party threw him out. Because the Whigs who put him on the ticket figured they'd steer him
05:21around. But Tyler vetoed their big banking bills instead. So on September 11, 1841, his cabinet
05:29walked into his office one at a time and quit. Every single one except Daniel Webster. And two days
05:36later, the Whigs kicked him out of the party completely. So Tyler finished his term with no
05:41party behind him, making him the last and only president his own party ever disowned.
05:47Sir, your whole staff just quit. And your party quit you. Maybe you should just pack it up.
05:53But the next president took a road nobody's taken since. Because James K. Polk is the last
05:59and only Speaker of the House to become president. And in four years, he added California, the Southwest,
06:06and the Pacific Northwest, then kept his promise to serve one term. But 103 days after leaving
06:12office, he died of cholera. So on July 4, 1850, Zachary Taylor sat through a long ceremony and
06:20brutal heat at the half-built Washington Monument, then went home and ate a bowl of cherries with
06:25ice-cold milk. And within a day, he was violently sick. So his doctors dosed him with opium, fed him
06:33mercury and bled him, which only made it worse. And on July 9, Taylor died upstairs in the White
06:40House, making him the last president to die in there. So his VP Millard Fillmore finished
06:45the term. And he's the last president from the Whig Party, partly because he helped kill
06:50it. Because Fillmore signed the Fugitive Slave Act, Northern Whigs never forgave him, and the
06:56party split over slavery and vanished. So every president since has been a Democrat or Republican.
07:02But Franklin Pierce put the last piece on the map, cuz railroad men wanted a southern route
07:08to the Pacific, and the ground for it sat over the Mexican border. So on December 30, 1853,
07:14the Gadsden Purchase bought 30,000 square miles of it for $10 million, making Pierce the last
07:20president to add land to the lower 48. Then came James Buchanan, born in 1791, the last president
07:28born in the 1700s. So he's the last one who grew up hearing about the revolution from the guys who
07:34actually fought it. And he left office with the country tearing itself in half. And in the summer
07:40of 1864, the war showed up at the next president's front door. Cuz Ulysses S. Grant had pulled nearly
07:47every good soldier out of Washington. So when Confederate General Jubal Early marched 10,000 men
07:53at the Capitol, the forts were held by clerks and men straight out of hospital beds. And on July 12,
08:001864, Abraham Lincoln rode out to Fort Stevens and climbed up onto the wall, 6'4", in a stovepipe hat,
08:08while sharpshooters worked the tree line. A surgeon just a few feet away took a bullet. Legend says a young
08:15officer named Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. screamed at him, Get down, you fool! So Lincoln got down. And
08:22no city president has ever been under enemy fire since. So Andrew Johnson took over. And in 1868,
08:29the Senate put him on trial to throw him out. And he survived by one vote. But he wasn't finished.
08:36Cuz in
08:361875, Tennessee elected him to that same Senate. So Johnson walked back into the chamber that tried to
08:43fire him. And senators stood and applauded, making him the last and only former president to serve
08:50there. Meanwhile, Grant was carrying something most people don't know about. Cuz in the 1850s, Grant was
08:56a failure, selling firewood on street corners to feed his family. And somewhere in there,
09:02his father-in-law handed him an enslaved man named William Jones, worth around $1,000. Which was more
09:09money than Grant had seen in years. But on March 28, 1859, he walked into a courthouse and set Jones
09:16free instead. Then two years later, he was running the army that ended slavery. And he's the last
09:23president who ever owned another human being. Whew! Glad we're done with that. But the ugliest ending to
09:30any election came in 1876. Cuz three southern states each sent in two sets of results. And the
09:38Constitution says nothing about who actually settles that. So Congress built a one-time electoral
09:43commission of 15 men. And they voted 8 to 7 every time right down party lines. So Rutherford B. Hayes
09:52won
09:52by one electoral vote. And no president since has been picked by a commission. Then came James Garfield,
09:59the last president born in a log cabin. Cuz by then, the log cabin was mostly a campaign prop. And
10:05every
10:06politician wanted one in his story. But Garfield's was real. A one-room cabin in Ohio in 1831. And after
10:13him,
10:14the frontier closed. So presidents started being born in towns and houses. So his VP, Chester A. Arthur,
10:21moved in wearing the loudest mutton chops in American history. And he's the last president to rock him. Cuz
10:27ever since Lincoln grew the first presidential beard in 1861, almost every man in that house
10:33had something on his face. But the chops died with Arthur. But don't worry. We got plenty more
10:38presidential facial hair left. I think we need to bring these bad boys back. Okay. Cuz next came a
10:4649-year-old bachelor named Grover Cleveland, who announced in 1886 that he was getting married to
10:52Frances Folsom, who was 21. Who he'd known since the day she was born cuz her father was his law
10:58partner. But America loved it. So on June 2nd, 1886, they married in the Blue Room with John
11:05Philip Sousa leading the Marine Band. And it's still the only wedding a sitting president has
11:11ever had in that house. Then Cleveland lost in 1888 and won it back in 1892, which makes him president
11:1922
11:19and 24. So who kept his seat warm in between? That'd be Benjamin Harrison, a Civil War general
11:26with a beard halfway down his chest. And he's the last president to wear one. Cuz as that generation
11:32aged out, safety razors got cheap and a clean face started to look modern. But this next guy risked his
11:39life for coffee. Cuz William McKinley enlisted as a private at 18. And on September 17, 1862,
11:46at Antietam, the bloodiest single day in American history, 19-year-old Sergeant McKinley drove a wagon
11:53of hot coffee into the fighting to feed men who've been shooting since sunrise. There's even a monument
11:59to that wagon on the battlefield today. And when McKinley was shot in Buffalo in September of 1901,
12:05he became the last president to serve in the Civil War. So as VP Theodore Roosevelt took over. And years
12:12later, Teddy pulled off something no third-party candidate has since. Cuz by 1912, he decided the
12:19man he handpicked to replace him, William Howard Taft, was wrecking everything. So he lost the
12:24Republican nomination at the convention and started his own party, the Bull Moose Party. And on October
12:3014, 1912 in Milwaukee, a man stepped out of the crowd and shot him in the chest. But the bullet
12:37had to
12:37punch through a folded-up 50-page speech in a steel glasses case first. So it stopped in his ribs.
12:44And Teddy gave the speech anyway, bleeding through his shirt for over an hour. And that November,
12:50he finished second, ahead of a sitting president, making Teddy the last third-party candidate to
12:56ever beat one of the big two. And Taft, who came in third, ends two streaks by himself. Cuz Taft
13:03is the
13:03last president with any facial hair at all. That mustache walked out the door in 1913,
13:08and every president in the 113 years since has been clean-shaven. And out on the lawn,
13:15he kept the last White House cow. Cuz back then, plenty of families kept a cow for fresh milk.
13:21So a Holstein named Pauline Wayne grazed the South Lawn and supplied his. But when Taft left,
13:27Pauline went back to Wisconsin. And no cow has lived there since. You did good, girl. You did real good.
13:35But Woodrow Wilson's last started in grief. Cuz on August 6, 1914, his wife Ellen died of kidney
13:43disease in the White House, right as World War I was starting. And Wilson came apart,
13:49telling people he'd welcome being killed. But in 1915, he met a widow named Edith Galt.
13:55And that December, they married. So he's the last president to get married in office.
14:00And on March 5, 1917, he rode to his second inauguration by horse-drawn carriage. The last
14:06president to do that, too. Cuz his successor, Warren G. Harding, rode to his in a car. And
14:12Harding won on November 2, 1920, his 55th birthday, making him the only and last president elected on
14:20his cake day. But when Harding died in office, the news had to be delivered by hand. Cuz on the
14:26night
14:26of August 2, 1923, Calvin Coolidge was asleep at his father's farmhouse in Plymouth Notch, Vermont,
14:33which had no telephone and no electricity. So a messenger had to drive out there with a telegram.
14:38And at 2.47 in the morning, Coolidge's own father, a notary public, swore his son in as president by
14:45the
14:45light of a kerosene lamp. Then Coolidge went back to bed, making him the last and only president
14:52sworn in by his dad. On the flip side, Herbert Hoover is the last president to let the whole
14:57country walk in the front door. Cuz starting in 1801, every New Year's Day, any American could get in
15:03line and shake the president's hand. Some years, that line ran for blocks with over 6,000 people.
15:09And Hoover held the last one on January 1, 1932. Then it stopped. Cuz the next president couldn't
15:17stand in a receiving line without the country finding out what polio had done to his legs.
15:22Cuz Franklin D. Roosevelt broke the one rule nobody had ever broken. Washington walked away after two
15:29terms. And for 150 years, every president treated that like law. But in 1940, with Europe collapsing,
15:37FDR ran again. And won. And won again in 1944. So in 1951, America passed the 22nd amendment and made
15:47Washington's tradition into law. Which makes FDR the last president who will ever serve more than
15:53twice. But a farmer from Missouri had it worse. Cuz Harry S. Truman is the last president without a
16:01college degree. Cuz his eyes were too bad for West Point and his family was too broke for tuition.
16:06And on January 20, 1953, Truman finished his term and rode back to Independence, Missouri on a passenger
16:14train. Cuz back then, there was no pension. And no secret service for a former president.
16:20So Truman lived on a $112 a month army pension and turned down corporate paychecks. Saying those
16:27companies would be buying the office, not him. Which embarrassed Congress into passing the
16:32former president's act in 1958. Making Truman the last one who went home with nothing.
16:38Sorry sir. Here's five bucks. So next came Dwight D. Eisenhower. Born on October 14, 1890. The last
16:47president born in the 1800s. Then he handed the job to the youngest man ever elected. And on January 20,
16:541961,
16:55John F. Kennedy rode to his inauguration in a silk top hat. The last president to ever wear one. But
17:02his bigger last came in 1963 in Dallas. Cuz eight presidents died in office between 1841 and 1963.
17:11And four of them were murdered. It happened so regularly that Americans half expected it. And since
17:18Kennedy, not one president has been assassinated. More than 60 years. Thanks to better medicine and
17:24a secret service that stepped up its game. So Lyndon B. Johnson took the oath on the plane home. And
17:30for
17:30the next 14 months, America had no vice president at all. Cuz the constitution had no way to replace one.
17:37So in 1967, we passed the 25th amendment, which lets a president appoint a new VP. And LBJ's the last
17:45one
17:46who went without. And hang on to that amendment. Cuz it comes back in a minute. But first,
17:52Richard Nixon holds a last that stings. Cuz on July 20, 1969, he picked up a phone in the Oval
17:58Office
17:59and talked to two Americans standing on the moon. And then it stopped. Cuz Apollo cost a fortune and the
18:06public got bored of it fast. So the last three missions got cancelled. And in December of 1972,
18:12Apollo 17 lifted off. Making Nixon the last president to put Americans on the moon.
18:18But Nixon had one more last in him. Cuz in August of 1974, he became the only president to quit
18:24the job.
18:25Which is where that 25th amendment comes back. Cuz Nixon's VP had already quit over bribery charges.
18:32So Nixon used that new amendment to appoint Gerald Ford. Then Nixon resigned too, and Ford moved up. So
18:39Ford is the only president who never won a national election. And when he finally ran in 1976, he lost.
18:48Then Jimmy Carter got rid of a presidents had enjoyed for almost 50 years. Cuz the USS Sequoia was a
18:55104-foot
18:56presidential yacht. And Kennedy spent his last birthday on it. But Carter thought that looked
19:01terrible while Americans were struggling. So in 1977, he sold it. And no president has had one since.
19:09Aw man! No fun, sir!
19:12But Ronald Reagan pulled off something nobody has come close to since. Cuz in 1984, he ran for a second
19:19term against Walter Mondale. And on election night, Reagan won 49 out of 50 states. Mondale held on to
19:27exactly one, his home state of Minnesota, by about 3,800 votes. So Reagan finished with 525 electoral
19:35votes. The most anybody has ever won. And in the 40 years since, nobody's even hit 400. Making Reagan
19:43the last president to win a real landslide. But his VP had lived through worse. Cuz George H.W. Bush
19:50turned 18
19:51six months after Pearl Harbor, joined the Navy that same day, and became one of its youngest pilots.
19:57So on September 2, 1944, over an island called Chichijima, his bomber took a hit and caught fire.
20:04But Bush held the dive, dropped his bombs on target, and only then bailed out. And his two crewmen,
20:11John Delaney and Ted White, never got out. So Bush floated alone in a raft until the submarine USS
20:17Finnback pulled him aboard. And he asked himself why he made it and they didn't for the rest of his
20:23life. So when he left in January of 1993, something bigger left with him. Cuz from Kennedy to Bush,
20:31seven presidents in a row had served in World War II. And he was the last one. Man, they don't
20:37really
20:38make him like that anymore. But the man who replaced him ended a different streak. Cuz from 1998 to 2001,
20:45the government under Bill Clinton took in more than it spent. And in 2000, the surplus hit about
20:52$236 billion. It took a tax increase, spending caps, a Republican Congress fighting a Democratic
20:58president, and a tech boom. Then it vanished. Cuz of a recession, a tax cut, and two wars. And nobody's
21:06run a surplus since. So Clinton is the last president whose books came out ahead. Then in 2001, George W.
21:13Bush did something only one other family has done. Cuz John Adams watched his own son take the oath in
21:201825. And 176 years later, the Bushes became the second father and son to both hold the office,
21:27making him the last son of a president to get the job. Then Barack Obama served eight straight years,
21:34which made three two-term presidents in a row. Something that hasn't happened since Jefferson,
21:39Madison, and Monroe. And Obama's the last to pull off two full terms back-to-back.
21:45At least so far. Cuz Donald Trump lost in 2020, then ran again and won in 2024.
21:52So on January 20th, 2025, he became President 47. And the second man ever to serve two terms that
21:59weren't back-to-back, 132 years after Cleveland. And he's the only president who never held a
22:06government or military job first. Which brings us to the newest last on the list. Cuz on July 21st,
22:132024, Joe Biden ended his own campaign for a second term. And the last sitting president to step aside
22:19was LBJ 56 years earlier. Though LBJ quit before the primaries, and Biden did it after he'd actually
22:27won them. So every last on this list is a door America closed and never opened again. But there's
22:33one last that hasn't happened yet. Cuz somewhere out there is a kid who's gonna grow up, raise their
22:39right hand, and do something no president ever does again. And that's the best part about this country.
22:44We're not finished yet. But every door that closed on this list got opened by somebody first. From the
22:52first presidential assassination, to the first televised debate, to the first commander-in-chief
22:57dropping a nuclear bomb. This is every presidential first. So click right here and let's go watch him
23:04do it all for the first time.
