'Eternity' writer/director David Freyne chats with CinemaBlend about the brilliant on-screen dynamic between actors John Early and Da'Vine Joy Randolph, and how their inspiring performances led him to write new scenes for them during filming.
Transcript
00:00I also want to talk about John Early and...
00:03All day, please.
00:05They're so funny, and Divine Joy Randolph.
00:07Did you guys, like, was that on the page?
00:09Were you kind of letting them riff? Like, there's magic.
00:12So it was on the page, and they were always quite big characters on the page,
00:19but they were so much better than I ever imagined.
00:21And I think what ends up happening is they're so great,
00:24you just go home at night after a shoot and you write extra scenes for them.
00:27And I would come in the next day with, like, new lines for them,
00:30and they're like, oh, my God, David, more dialogue.
00:32But they're just so endlessly inspiring because their dynamic was so brilliant.
00:38And, like, I ended up...
00:39There's a beautiful scene in the film where it's just the two of them discussing their roles
00:43and walking into this junction as it wakes up.
00:45I wrote that a couple of days beforehand just because, like, I just want more of them.
00:48I want a scene where it's just them. It's not the others. It's just them.
00:52And so, yeah, you know, with all the actors, they were so brilliant.
00:55You're just responding to how great they are and giving them as good as the best material you possibly can.
01:02And, yeah, there's some brilliant jokes on the cutting room floor that just didn't make the film.
01:06But, like, Devine, at the end of every scene, she would just do something hilarious.
01:09And sometimes it's in there, but there's a lot that you haven't seen.
01:13Oh, really?
01:13Yeah.
01:14Do you have plans for, like, bloopers or anything?
01:16I'll talk to A24. I'll see what you do.
01:19But, yeah, they're just so brilliant.
01:21So brilliant.
01:21Curious, like, process-wise for you, like, having written it and then when you're directing it, like, how much were
01:27they in the script beforehand?
01:28How much are you, like, loose with it?
01:29They, over the course of the writing it, those roles, Anna and Ryan, they got bigger and bigger and bigger.
01:36And, originally, they didn't have their own will they, won't they?
01:39And I just thought that would be so much fun.
01:41And so they just kept growing.
01:43And they do kind of act like the Greek chorus in this.
01:45They kind of, they are the people that explain the rules, so to speak, and guide these characters through this
01:50weird, crazy world.
01:53So they just grew.
01:54And I think what was amazing is Devon and John's chemistry with Lizzie, Miles, and Callum is extraordinary.
02:02Yeah.
02:03And so you want to have them together as much as possible.
02:05And I think our favorite days on set were the days we had all five of them together.
02:09Like, it was, they were just like kids.
02:11They were just playing.
02:12And that was amazing to watch.
02:14It's not a competition!
02:16Yes, it is!
02:18Sweetheart, it is 100% for sure a competition.
02:19It is, in fact, a competition.
02:20That's literally what we're here for.
02:23It's like crazy, we're basically2020 Andrew submer27.
