00:00Dozens of supermarket fridges and freezers across seven European countries have been hit by cyber attacks,
00:07causing food to spoil and forcing stores to discard stock.
00:10On Monday, temperatures in the affected fridges and freezers began rising
00:14after their settings were manipulated, with losses estimated at around €100,000.
00:22Many supermarkets use internet-connected systems to monitor and maintain refrigeration units remotely,
00:28but this also creates a potential entry point for hackers to interfere with temperature controls.
00:33European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Christophe Hansen described the incidents
00:37as a deliberate attempt to disrupt the EU's food supply and undermine consumers' confidence.
00:42The incidents follow a similar attack in France last month,
00:45where around 700 supermarkets were reportedly affected
00:48after freezer temperatures were raised to as high as 50 degrees Celsius.
00:52Industry experts estimate the damage in France could reach tens of millions of euros,
00:57although no final figure has been released.
