00:30Think about the teams that built those original games and the pictures we took over here along these walls when
00:35it was eight people and then 40, 50, and over 100.
00:39Thinking what it's become really is thanks to all of you and what you've given to the games and given
00:44all of us.
00:45Yes, it's a celebration of 40 years for us, but you all have been along in that journey with us.
00:52It all started in 1986 with gridiron.
00:56You might just think, hey, this is a sports game for that era, but it's actually our first simulation.
01:01That's what we always wanted to do is to make the world, whatever it was, come alive.
01:06And gridiron is the first physics-based sports game.
01:10And that led us to Wayne Gretzky Hockey.
01:13And eventually to, stop me if you've heard this, a giant 3D world based on a post-apocalyptic IP.
01:21And of course, no, it's not Fallout originally.
01:23It was the Terminator.
01:24Back in those days, we built one of the first virtual worlds on the PC where you could explore all
01:31of Los Angeles.
01:32And I was such a fan of those games, and I can remember coming in this building and knocking on
01:37the door January 1993 and saying, I would love to work here.
01:47And then in 1994, we came out with the first of the series, I think, obviously, that we're best known
01:53for, The Elder Scrolls, with Arena.
01:55And this wasn't just a 3D world.
01:57This was a massive one where you could be who you want to be and then go do whatever you
02:03want to do.
02:03And that's clearly still the DNA of the games that we make today.
02:08But we were still doing the Terminator.
02:10So we pushed that next with really full 3D and more interactive worlds and more choice for all of us
02:16to have with, obviously, Daggerfall and the Terminator Future Shock.
02:21First game with WSAD WASDE.
02:24I say it different, but we made it up, so I get to say it how I want.
02:28Mouse Controls.
02:29And then we thought about really what we needed to be making.
02:32What did the audience really want from us?
02:35And that game was The Elder Scrolls III Morrowind, which really kind of resets a time period for us here
02:42in terms of who we are and the kind of games we were going to make.
02:46This also started our ability to do modding with the community, where it's not just a character you're playing exploring
02:53a massive world.
02:54Now you can really make it your own.
02:57And it was our first game that we did with Xbox that was just coming out.
03:01Obviously, it was very PC-based in its architecture that allowed us to move from not just being a PC
03:07developer, but a console developer.
03:09And Morrowind became a runaway success on the Xbox and started a relationship that obviously we have today in such
03:17a huge way now being a part of it.
03:23After the success of Morrowind, we could have done a fast sequel, but we felt what got us there was
03:30pushing the boundaries.
03:31And so we reset again and did The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion for the Xbox 360.
03:38Now that we're partnering with Xbox, that was a game that we started making before we even saw the console.
03:44It originally had 256 megs of RAM, and when they told us it was going to have 512 megs of
03:50RAM so we could really make the game that we wanted to make, we threw a party.
03:53And I've never seen programmers happier, still to this day, in my life.
03:58Oblivion becomes a success more than we ever dreamed of in gaming or careers or anything.
04:04It also allowed us to then reboot and bring back a fan-loved franchise.
04:13The opportunity to bring Fallout back with Fallout 3 was a highlight for us.
04:19We were such fans of the original series.
04:22And, you know, what that did to bring so many people to the world of Fallout and what it's become
04:27today is amazing.
04:29It was during this time, too, that our company grew with legendary studios like id Software joining us.
04:35And down here in the basement, where the team was, where we started Fallout 3, is also the beginnings of
04:39ZeniMax Online Studios, who then grew and brought the Elder Scrolls into the online world.
04:45I'm reminded by these statues here that we used for Fallout, but they're actually props that were in this Indiana
04:51Jones movie.
04:52Now we think today that with our friends at Machine Games, Indiana Jones came back.
04:57It's really incredible.
04:58It's a great visual of how we've changed and how the company has grown, where, despite the size, it's an
05:04incredible place to make games, to gather, to talk about games.
05:09And our cafeteria still today is one of our favorite places.
05:18That whole era culminates, of course, with Skyrim, a game where so much of what we were doing with RPGs
05:26and open worlds really came together, and it brought so many of you to our games.
05:32Even today, 15 years later, Skyrim is our most played game.
05:37After that, back to Fallout with Fallout 4.
05:40That was a game where we pushed the tech again, and we pushed your ability to create inside the game,
05:46and also outside the game, where we're finally sharing mods, regardless of platform, and bringing that to consoles.
05:53And we grew again.
05:55We had new studios in Montreal, and in Austin, and in Dallas, all of us working together.
06:00And we brought Fallout Online with Fallout 76, which even today is thriving, one of the best communities in gaming,
06:08despite it being a game still about the apocalypse.
06:11And also finally doing a new IP after so long, and exploring not just one world, but a galaxy of
06:18worlds with Starfield.
06:30You know, as we're here in the 40th anniversary, we think about all of the games we've made.
06:35And, you know, every day when I walk by this case, obviously I look at the games and think about
06:40them, but more so, I think about the teams that made them, and the time, and the passion that everybody
06:46put into the games.
06:47And then what they meant to all of you, and hearing from you, and the time that you spent in
06:53them, how meaningful that was to you, and to let you know when we hear that, how meaningful that is
07:00to us.
07:00And so even though, yes, we're looking back, we're also looking forward to all we're doing, particularly with the Fallout
07:07franchise, and obviously the Elder Scrolls.
07:10You know, everybody's always asking about Elder Scrolls 6, and we thought, hey, given the moment, what a perfect time
07:17to tell you what the Elder Scrolls 6 is actually called.
08:07The Elder Scrolls 6 is actually called.
08:22From all of us to all of you, thank you for being on this journey with us.
08:27We'll see you out there.
08:40Thank you.
