Portugal’s attempt to revive its empire sparks a chain reaction—and a united Africa ultimately pushes Europe back across the continent. In this hypothetical map scenario, France moves into West Africa, the UK focuses on South Africa, and Spain and Italy target North Africa. Germany, lacking a navy in the scenario, manages to retake only Namibia.

As African countries unite against the returning European powers, their combined military effort changes the course of the conflict. The war ends without an invasion of Europe, while Portugal loses its African colonies but keeps Brazil. Explore this alternate-history “what if” about Portugal, European colonialism, African resistance, and the imagined return of the Portuguese Empire.

00:00What if Portugal tried to bring back the Portuguese Empire?
00:03Part 2
00:03After Portugal managed to retake its old colonies,
00:07the other European nations would decide they wanted their old colonies back as well.
00:11France and the UK would be the first to act.
00:14Thanks to the French bases in Africa,
00:16France would be able to quickly retake a large portion of West Africa,
00:20while the UK would focus on securing South Africa.
00:23In the meantime, Spain and Italy would focus on retaking their old colonies in North Africa.
00:28Germany would try to retake its old colonies as well,
00:31but since they didn't have a navy, they would only manage to retake Namibia.
00:36At this point, the rest of the African countries would become scared
00:39and would unite in order to push the Europeans out.
00:42The united African military would be massive,
00:45and soon enough, the Europeans would quickly be pushed out of Africa.
00:49However, the Africans would be too exhausted to invade Europe, so the war would end there.
00:54Portugal would end up losing its African colonies because of this,
00:57but would manage to keep Brazil, at least for now.
