Man Utd fans let off 4,000 balloons in major protest against Glazers and Ineos just minutes before crunch Roma clash

MANCHESTER UNITED fans unleashed more than 4,000 balloons into the air before the dramatic win in the Champions League clash against Roma in protest against the ownership.

United supporters opted for a visible protest against the vilified Glazer family, who took over via a controversial leveraged buyout in 2005.

The Stretford End unfurled gold and green balloons – the club’s original Newton Heath colours before it became United in 1902 – as the Champions League anthem rang out.

The colours began to proliferate in 2010 and have been a regular fixture at Old Trafford since.

Protest group, The Stretford Ender,s organised the move, aiming to symbolise 21 years of decay under MIA Glazer stewardship.

The crowd also chucked a number of tennis balls onto the pitch in the 21st minute – with United at that point already two goals down to the visitors – to commemorate the milestone.

Players had to clear the box of the missiles, with the chaos that the club finds itself in summed up by the image of Matheus Cunha picking up a destroyed pie and dutifully removing it from the field of play.

Supporters began to group minority co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe with the Glazers last season, and the backlash has grown this season after two wins from 13 games.

SunSport understands there were plans to bring a banner into Old Trafford that read: “No new stadium, we want new owners.”

United blocked the ticker from entering the stadium, after citing the inability of UEFA to sanction it in time.
