Seventeen years get compressed into a montage that never shows a face. Hands, doors, plates, a coat being mended. No dialogue, no dates, no narration.
That is a deliberate bet: the show refuses to dramatise her suffering, because dramatising it would make it a scene, and scenes are things characters get to react to. Instead it makes seventeen years feel like weather.
The payoff is that when someone later describes those years as "three months of inconvenience", the audience has no counter-evidence to offer. You never saw the years either. You only felt them.
Weak spot: the montage is so effective that the middle episodes feel slow by comparison.
Still, that opening deserves study.
