Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the establishment of a Supreme Court bench in Chennai to bring justice closer to citizens in southern states. Citing geographical distances and travel costs, the Chief Minister pointed out that travelling to New Delhi creates significant financial and time constraints for litigants. The demand, supported by constitutional provisions, has been raised since the 1980s by successive DMK and AIADMK governments. Despite being turned down during earlier judicial conferences, the state has reiterated its request to set up a regional apex court bench.

00:00Chief Minister Vijay has written to the Prime Minister for a top court bench in Chennai.
00:07That's the demand that he has raised.
00:09So he has urged Prime Minister Modi for a Supreme Court bench in Chennai.
00:13He wants justice closer to home.
00:16So he has urged the Prime Minister to push for a Supreme Court bench in Chennai.
00:21So that's the latest that we are learning where Chief Minister Vijay is now urging the Prime Minister
00:25for a Supreme Court bench to be set up in Chennai itself.
00:29My colleague Pramod Madhav continues to stay with us with more details on this.
00:32Pramod, what is the reason, what exactly has prompted the Chief Minister
00:38to urge the Prime Minister for a top court bench in Chennai?
00:43One thing is very certain, this is not a kind of a request or a demand that it has received.
00:48It's been from 1980s and particularly both the DNP and ADMP government have insisted on this particular situation.
00:54At the present, Chief Minister Sayyid is also once again reiterating that having one top court tattoo in Delhi
01:01is causing a lot of issues for the plaintiffs or the petitioners who have to travel all the way from
01:06Chennai
01:07or from the southern states all the way back to Delhi and the time constraint and such.
01:11So this is where the Chief Minister has said that, you know, I have urged the Prime Minister to intervene
01:15and get, you know, a separate branch of the Supreme Court in Tamil Nadu or at that particular location
01:21so that the division can be easy for the people of the southern states to move towards
01:25and either basically they can actually save the time and money.
01:28This is how the Chief Minister Vijay has also said that.
01:31However, he also claims there are constitutional possibilities for that and he has highlighted that as well.
01:35Very importantly, the Chief Minister said that since 1980s, this request has been placed
01:40and even in 2007, the Chief Justice Conference, even though it was not accepted,
01:46he wants the Prime Minister to once again intervene and get a branch of the Supreme Court in Tamil Nadu.
01:53All right, Ramud, thank you for those details.
01:55So geographical barriers and also the travel costs have been cited as the reason behind this demand
02:01where Chief Minister Vijay is urging Prime Minister to push for a Supreme Court bench in Chennai itself
02:06so that justice is closer to home, so that people do not have to travel all the way from Tamil
02:12Nadu to the national capital.
