Willard and Dibs react to what 49ers general manager John Lynch said today about Brandon Aiyuk potentially reporting to team headquarters tomorrow. Is Aiyuk actually going to show up?
Transcript
00:00I want to read this to you because this is worthy of some sort of a reaction.
00:08I wonder what yours is.
00:10All right, John Lynch today with regard to all things related to the Brandon Ayuk situation.
00:17And again, they are anticipating that Brandon shows up in some form at the facility tomorrow.
00:22I still don't know what this looks like.
00:24Who greets Brandon?
00:27Santa Clara police.
00:28Could it be the police?
00:30Could it be John?
00:31Could it be, I don't know, the administrative assistant?
00:35I have no idea how this works, and I would like to know.
00:38I actually had a thought about how this might play out, and I think Santa Clara PD gets an anonymous
00:44tip.
00:45And, yeah, hi, there's a guy coming up and stuff, and he's a former wide receiver.
00:51And I think that you may have a warrant and stuff, and he'll be here in about seven minutes and
00:55stuff.
00:55And I don't know if you want to come here and, I don't know, arrest him and stuff, but he'll
00:59be here and stuff.
01:00That does not sound very anonymous.
01:02No, it doesn't.
01:03We're down to either Kyle Shanahan or Brock Purdy.
01:06It's one of those two.
01:07Anyway, here's what John Lynch said about Brandon Ayuk, and we have to talk about not so much what he's
01:16saying, but the way he said it, okay?
01:18The best I can do, obviously, is read this quote to you.
01:21Here it is.
01:23Quote, I think the way I'll characterize it, number one, we've got a 6-1 football team that we think
01:31really has a shot at this thing this year.
01:35So our focus is going to remain on this team, and Kyle spoke of that yesterday.
01:42Now, look, having said that, I have a job to do, and it entails a lot of different things.
01:48This is kind of a unique situation, not one you have, so there's really no playbook.
01:53But I always go back to what's my charge, what's my job.
01:57My job is to look out for the best interest of the 49ers.
02:00And as such, in this particular situation, we are working with the NFL Management Council to navigate through a different
02:09situation.
02:10And so it's fluid.
02:11I'm going to kind of leave it at that because I've been recommended to do so, and I think it's
02:16the right thing to do for a pathway for both sides here that works.
02:20We can talk a little bit more in detail about the process because it's kind of a fluid situation.
02:27Now, there's more, but let's first react to that.
02:31When you hear him say that, your processing and translating says, what happens next?
02:38What happens next is him, again, calling all 31 other teams and saying, hey, Brandon Ayuk, we might keep him.
02:46You know, it's a fluid situation, and he is our guy.
02:49He's under contract.
02:50But I know that you may need a wide receiver, so what do you think?
02:54What will you give us for Brandon Ayuk?
02:56By making it fluid, I do think that he's trying to leave open the possibility, even though it's third and
03:0227 from their own, you know, 22-yard line.
03:06Like, you're probably not going to pick up the first down.
03:08It's still third and 27.
03:10Okay.
03:11Not the fourth down yet.
03:12It's fluid because they're hoping against hope that one of these wide receiver-hungry teams throws him a something for
03:19Brandon Ayuk.
03:19The fact that all of this, and I don't think we talked enough about this yesterday, the fact that all
03:25of this, Drew Rosenhaus, Brandon Ayuk, the facility, Kyle Shanahan, John Lynch, why is it suddenly happening now with five
03:38days to go until the trade deadline?
03:42Why now?
03:43Brandon could have hired Drew Rosenhaus at any point.
03:46Brandon could have applied for reinstatement at any point.
03:49But now, now he wants to do it.
03:53Week nine in the National Football League when teams, they have their squads.
04:00They have their ideas.
04:02They're either going north or going south.
04:04They know who they are at this hour.
04:05But why now?
04:07Now is, in theory, the only time that organizations are like, huh, what can we add maybe a little bit?
04:14How do we augment this thing?
04:16So that's reaction number one.
04:18Before I read the second answer, here's something that also stood out to me.
04:24Like, John Lynch literally sounds in this quote as if he's saying, hey, you know, we're trying to work with
04:31Brandon to figure some things out.
04:33And I think a lot of people are going, wait a minute.
04:35Is there an openness here?
04:37Here, John says, we're working with NFL Management Council.
04:43And I'm going to leave it at that because I've been recommended to do so.
04:47When I hear this, I don't even hear John.
04:50I hear lawyers.
04:51I hear lawyers.
04:54And lawyers don't show up so that Brandon can play football for the 49ers in Week 12.
05:00Lawyers show up so that these two sides can break up and they can do so in a legal way.
05:06And they can also do so in a way where both sides may try to recoup money from the other
05:12side.
05:13No doubt.
05:13That's what I hear.
05:15For sure.
05:15And I do think that it's both pieces of that to me.
05:18On the one hand, they would love to get a third and 27 conversion in that, you know, somebody gives
05:25them a sixth and then you send them a you can a seventh or whatever the swap would be.
05:29You're not going to get much, if anything, for him.
05:32And then if push comes to shove and he's able to report to the facility without being arrested, he has
05:38warrants out in Santa Clara and he comes in and whether he passes the physical or not at that point,
05:43let's say he passes the physical.
05:45Well, then you're going to cut him and you've already talked to your people about how do we recoup the
05:50money, the bonuses that we paid him up front, the fact that he clearly didn't report for over a year.
05:56How much of it can we maybe recoup?
05:58How do we go about that?
05:59So, yes, that I think is part of what he was talking about.
06:02All right.
06:02Now, there's a follow up.
06:03And John has asked, hold on.
06:06You called it a fluid situation.
06:07Does that mean you're listening to Drew Rosenhaus and Brandon Ayuk about a possible reunion?
06:16John's answer, quote, yeah, of course.
06:19I think everything's possible.
06:22I will say this.
06:23We've worked with Drew a lot.
06:25Drew's a good guy to deal with.
06:27He's reasonable.
06:27He's got integrity.
06:28So in terms of that, that's all good.
06:31We'll see how this thing goes.
06:33I think I'll just leave it at that.
06:35And like I said, I think we'll have a lot more I can share with you in the coming weeks.
06:41In the coming weeks.
06:42Right.
06:43In other words, the trade deadline is Tuesday.
06:45And if he is still on the team after Tuesday, well, then you go ahead and think about what the
06:51move would be from there.
06:52And I guess you don't have to cut him before Tuesday.
06:56The process to me feels like he shows up tomorrow in theory, and then he automatically goes right into the
07:02physical process.
07:03And even if he passes the physical, well, you have to get him out there and do movement things to
07:08see what he actually has to offer.
07:10And then there's a transactional move that would have to be made.
07:13And you get past Tuesday, the trade deadline.
07:16And if he's not dealt at that point, then maybe you go ahead and make a move.
07:20Well, this is being translated by many to say that there is still a possibility for the 49ers and Brandon
07:27Iyuk to be together someday.
07:30Could I rule it out?
07:31Could you rule it out?
07:32Did they rule it out?
07:33No.
07:34No.
07:35But I'm a big fan of Scarlett Johansson.
07:38Oh.
07:38And I think she's married to Colin Jost.
07:41That's all.
07:41That's correct.
07:42I've also.
07:43I don't know why you called her Johansson.
07:45Because the J is silent.
07:47It's not.
07:47But anyway, go ahead.
07:48It is where she's from.
07:49But that's neither here nor there.
07:50I'm married.
07:51She's married.
07:52She and Colin could break up.
07:54I could get divorced again.
07:57I mean, could is a small, small C in could.
08:01And she and I could absolutely still have a torrid love affair.
08:07That was not your best analogy?
08:09I loved it.
08:11Not.
08:11Nobody asked you, Grandy.
08:12I've got smiles from the seventh row.
08:14No.
08:15They're smiling at what we're saying about your analogy more so than your analogy.
08:20I didn't even.
08:21In fact, I think that smile right there, that smile came from Grandy's buzzer.
08:25It was Grandy's buzzer that made you smile, right?
08:27No.
08:27No, no, no.
08:28No, you're not even here, Grandy.
08:29The smile came.
08:30And it came before I was even able to get to the fact that Mike Breen would be on the
08:35call,
08:35and I'm not going to go there.
08:36Nobody is smiling about the idea of you and Scarlett Johansson.
08:40That is absurd.
08:41Bang!
08:42Not one of your best analogies, but I get what you're saying.
08:46What I hear.
08:47What I hear.
08:48That's more likely than I use being a niner.
08:51That's all I'm saying.
08:52It's really not.
08:53I'm handsome.
08:53I'm funny.
08:54I hear both Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch very, very clearly executing something that was
09:03their plan.
09:04In fact, you know how Mike Dunleavy and Steve Kerr, maybe this will be a better analogy.
09:08You know how Mike Dunleavy and Steve Kerr, anytime anybody says anything right now, they're
09:12like, turnovers.
09:14Turnovers.
09:15Yeah, we just want to limit turnovers.
09:17It was clear that they went into a back room and said, hey, when we're talking to the media,
09:23we need to make this about turnovers.
09:25This group, this roster can be better.
09:27They got to turn the ball over less.
09:29That came from a boardroom.
09:31It feels to me like this did too.
09:34And Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch, though they have zero openness whatsoever to having Brandon
09:41Ayuk back, they told each other, don't say that into a microphone.
09:45Certainly not before the trade deadline.
09:48Now, I could be wrong, but when John Lynch in both answers keeps going, I think I'll just
09:54leave it at that.
09:55Again, that sounds like someone who has been prepped by a legal team.
09:59Plus, if there was any world where the Chiefs or somebody would give you a seventh round draft
10:06pick or, I don't know, some free helmet padding, whatever, they'd give it up.
10:11It's like, let's wait until Tuesday and not say that out loud.
10:14Quote, I could be wrong.
10:16I doubt it.
10:17I know a lot of people are viewing today's quote as openness from the 49ers.
10:23I personally don't buy it.
10:26I don't buy it.
10:27Yeah, your analogy might have been better, but a lot less fun.
10:31And less gross, too.
10:33Less gross.
10:33No, less gross about a man and a woman falling in love late in life.
10:37Your analogy was about lawyers and backroom dealing.
10:40Boring.
10:41Your analogy, just calling you a man and her a woman is a little bit of a leap.
10:45But go ahead.
10:45The whole idea of the chance, the potential of that happening versus this happening, this
10:51is not happening.
10:52So they can talk about lawyers and in the coming weeks, blah, blah, blah.
10:56He's not going to be a niner.
10:57So we can all sit here and wait for the inevitability.
11:00And yeah, Scarlett and Colin break up and I somehow get divorced and I shoot my shot because
11:07it's all I've got.
11:08I have no chance.
11:09And Ayuk has no chance to be a niner.
11:11That was the point.
11:12Man.
11:12Are you going to keep going?
11:14Are you going to go back to this after every, like...
11:16I just was certainly back.
11:18Because your analogy was like legal mumbo jumbo and it was not very fun.
11:22Oh.
11:24And Grandy played the vomit noise, which I thought was personally...
11:28I thought it was a little personal front.
11:29He was not the only one feeling that.
11:32He was not the only one feeling that.
11:33I see nobody here in the super filling up crowd at Jack's.
11:37Nobody here was vomiting.
11:38There were a couple of people who nodded.
11:40Yeah, they can't hear us that well.
11:41Oh, that's fair.
11:42Anyway.
11:44Boosh.
11:45Exactly.
11:46Anyway.
11:46Listen, the conversation is there.
11:49888-957-9570.
11:52And today, it's more kind of a real or imagined conversation.
11:57I think that's where we go.
11:59It's maybe less about whether you want the situation to go this way or that way.
12:05Listen, we've heard from you.
12:07There are niner fans out there that would love to see Brandon Ayuk back on the team.
12:11Because once upon a time, he was good.
12:13They won a Super Bowl ring.
12:15End of conversation.
12:16I don't think it's anywhere near that simple.
12:19But some people do.
12:20And that's fine.
12:21But today, to me, is more about translating what John Lynch said today.
12:26And whether or not you actually believe that there is openness on the niner side.
12:33He said, quote, yeah, of course.
12:36I don't buy it.
12:38But do you?
12:39I don't do too.
12:39I don't buy it.
