Amid the general concerns about jobs and the economy, there are many reasons to be optimistic here in Leeds. The city remains a powerhouse across industries, from digital and tech to engineering, finance, healthcare and the creative sector. That was the message behind the recent ‘Careers in Leeds’ event where employers and training providers showcased opportunities, skills and pathways available to people looking for their first or next career step. We met some of those in attendance.

00:00Hi, my name is Gillian Wallace. I'm Head of Employment and Skills at Leeds City Council.
00:05The Employment and Skills Service is all about ensuring that the people that live and work in Leeds
00:10have got the skills and the competencies that they need for good jobs.
00:14Leeds is an absolutely fantastic city with a really, really diverse economy,
00:18but often people don't know what jobs are available to them and how they can build a career in the
00:23city.
00:24So the purpose of today's event is to give people the opportunity to come along
00:28and meet with our employers, meet with our universities, meet with our colleges and our training providers
00:34and find out about what options exist for them.
00:37We have so many good job opportunities in Leeds and really what we want from today is to people to
00:42come along
00:43and be inspired about where their career can take them.
00:46We've got representatives from Manufacturing and Engineering, from the hospitality and the visitor economy,
00:51from transport and logistics, financial, legal and professional services
00:56and also from the creative sector as well.
00:59Another area where Leeds has seen huge growth in the last couple of years is jobs in digital
01:03and that's everything from digital as a sector but also digital jobs within more traditional careers.
01:09We're here with our company NPM which is Mobile Patterns and Models.
01:13The day has been really good, a lot of engagement from the younger generation which is brilliant to see.
01:18A lot of parents with them as well supporting which is really good.
01:22We've took on a lot of CVs and we've given out a lot of information.
01:25Someone will come to a place like this and be like, wow that's what you actually make.
01:29It's good to be honest.
01:32I wish that it was shown in different areas in like a lesson sort of vibe or a school sort
01:37of setting.
01:38College.
01:38College so people actually understand it because I feel like not many people in the world understand what manufacturing is.
01:44It was really important that this event was as inclusive as possible.
01:47So for the first time in our major events we've got an inclusion zone that can support people with SEND,
01:53can support people that need some quiet time or maybe just need some additional help and support to access the
01:58opportunities.
01:59I work with the young people aged 18 to 25 who've experienced a period of homelessness.
02:04So it's about helping them in their new tenancy, whether that's with paying bills, more practical stuff like benefits.
02:12With a little bit of everything, going to the doctors, learning how to pay bills, food shopping, decorating their properties,
02:19making it feel like home.
02:21People of different ages and backgrounds has been nice to me because I kind of anticipated it would be more
02:26young people just out of college kind of thing.
02:28But it's actually been all ages and people wanting career changes and all sorts.
02:32It's been a really good event.
02:33As well as all the employers that we've got at the event today, we've also got a range of people
02:37that are here that can help you.
02:39The Leeds City Council Employment Hub will help you look for a job, will help you identify what skills that
02:45you've got.
02:45For some people, it's about what jobs I might want to do on the future.
02:49What can I find out about what I may want to do when I leave school?
02:52For other people, it's about taking that next step on their career ladder and seeing where do I go next
02:58and who can help me get there.
