London Colney

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta previews their Premier League match at home to Hull
Transcript
00:00And then we're going to a 10.30 tonight in Borussia.
00:04Can we go to the back?
00:05We'll kick off with Gary from Scottish.
00:08Hi, Gary.
00:10Can I start with the only injury update that is required these days?
00:15Touchwood, with Ayasaka.
00:16Still any usual hit?
00:19No, we talk about obviously weeks.
00:22Let's see, after the international break,
00:24he's going to start hitting the pitch
00:26and start to have more activities.
00:29It's how it feels.
00:30But unfortunately, he's going to be out for a while.
00:34Three weeks, I think, to Man City.
00:37Four weeks, four and a half weeks.
00:38A lot of them in Derby.
00:41Would that be a target?
00:43I don't want to push these guys into too much pressure.
00:46They are doing their best to get in field.
00:49Bukayo's desperate to get back with the team.
00:50But it's still quite early.
00:53Obviously, you know,
00:53soccer in the England squad, five Arsenal players in the England squad.
00:59That's more than the other traditional so-called big six put together.
01:04City 2, Liverpool 1, Chelsea 1, Manchester United 1, Spurs 1.
01:10How proud are you?
01:14It's a proud thing, obviously,
01:16to have a big English core in the national team at our club.
01:22It's something that is part of our identity.
01:24Not only the number, but as well the players that represent us and the national team.
01:30So, they are super happy to be back.
01:33You can see that.
01:34And, yeah, let's focus on tomorrow and after that they can go and do the beat with the national team.
01:40Ben White's back.
01:41Obviously, he was at Arsenal because of injury.
01:43And how much do people said he can stand out for Arsenal this season?
01:48Do you agree with that?
01:49Yeah, he's been brilliant.
01:50And I'm really happy with that.
01:51And we know the history behind what happened with Ben.
01:55He looked really happy.
01:56And, yeah, it's a moment that he's earned it.
01:59And he needs to enjoy now.
02:00Noni has started and finished three, almost four of the last two Premier League games.
02:07Two Champions League.
02:09Are you surprised he's not in the scoring?
02:11Well, that was an awesome match.
02:13He's got so many options.
02:15He needs to make decisions.
02:16He's made that one this time.
02:18And that's it.
02:19I leave that completely to him.
02:20With William Saliba,
02:21obviously the French don't have a fair score until tea time.
02:24Yeah.
02:26Well, we've been in very close contact.
02:28I think they announced it at 5pm this evening.
02:31So, they have all the information.
02:33Now, it's about them, about Zindina in this case, to get the call.
02:38And we will accept whatever it is.
02:41Would you rather he didn't go?
02:43I think it's something between them more.
02:45Because William needs minutes as well.
02:48I know how much he loves to be in and around the national team.
02:51He's a new manager, a really exciting one as well.
02:54So, whatever is decided, it's fine for us.
02:57Unbeaten in the Champions League.
02:59You were a little bit unhappy off the game because of the missed chances.
03:04We wanted to finish the game in a different way.
03:07You know, especially the way we started and how brilliant we were in the first half.
03:10But those things happen sometimes as well.
03:12You have to congratulate the opponent.
03:15We know that we should have done better there.
03:17But as well, it's true that we did a lot of good things to earn the right to win there.
03:22PSG, the team that have stopped Arsenal winning it probably the last two seasons, won by six.
03:28Is that the kind of levels for every game you want to be reaching?
03:31Yeah, but in the last two seasons they won the Champions League but they were in the first eight before
03:36in the qualification.
03:37So that tells you how difficult it is for everybody to have that kind of level and consistency.
03:42But it's on us and we always want to get better because we can.
03:46You described it as a pain in the tummy when you lost that game for Brighton before the last international
03:52break.
03:52It's best for throughout the three weeks, certainly as far as you're concerned.
03:55Do you want to avoid that happening again this time?
03:58Yeah, we want to attack the game tomorrow right from the off.
04:02And we know the momentum that we have right now.
04:04We need to increase that momentum, especially going into the international break
04:09because we know what's coming after November and December.
04:12Just in this game of 5-1-inch, everything matters when you're going for the big trophies.
04:17You've only had one game at home in the last six.
04:20When you come back, you go to Newcastle,
04:23but then after that you have 11 games all in London back-to-back.
04:27Could that be a factor? Is that important?
04:29Well, we have to navigate with that.
04:31I think we've done it really, really well so far
04:34because we had a really tough opponent and a lot of difficult trouble to do.
04:39The team has responded really well.
04:41But it's now about tomorrow.
04:43Tomorrow is the main focus.
04:44Everything that we've done, I think, comes back to tomorrow
04:47and maximising what we've done in the past with tomorrow's game.
04:51And go there, be better than Hull and beat them.
04:57Hi.
04:58Hi.
04:58I wanted to check for the team news.
05:01I know there were pictures of him playing.
05:03Is he all OK with you?
05:05Yeah, he's fine.
05:06He was feeling much better today.
05:08We took him out for precaution and for the amount of minutes that he was playing,
05:13but yesterday and today he's feeling good.
05:16Looking at how some of his games started this season,
05:19Declan's got five assists for most of any player in the Premier League.
05:24In fact, he calls it how he's got the last season.
05:27Against Bayern, he's got his first goal since March.
05:30What do you think has changed in the start of the game?
05:35The mentality to go and win football matches and to add another level to his game,
05:42another kind of threat and be much more unpredictable.
05:46And we've been working a lot with that.
05:48He is desperate to improve every part of his game.
05:53And we need to do that while we maintain so many incredible things
05:56that he's already done.
05:57But he is in the right trajectory.
06:00Of your four games at home so far,
06:02you've only conceded two goals quite similar for last season.
06:06When you went into management,
06:08did you think you'd be known as a manager
06:10for having the defensive still in the team?
06:15I don't know.
06:15I didn't even think about that.
06:17So whatever comes and if it's positive for the team
06:20and for the players and for the club, more than welcome.
06:23And just finally, looking at Holes,
06:25they're just out of the top part of the table.
06:29What surprised you presently about them
06:31given that they've been out of the Premier League for so long?
06:34Well, it's been an incredible journey.
06:35I think what Sergei and the club have done from last year,
06:38again promoted it and then performed on some of the difficult games
06:42that they've been through and the way they have competed
06:44and the right to get results.
06:46Really impressive.
06:48We've been discussing that with the boys,
06:49the kind of game that we expect tomorrow
06:52and to make sure we're clear what we have to do to beat them.
06:59Hi, Miguel.
07:00Hello.
07:01Good, thank you.
07:01I've just spoken about your defence.
07:04Two goals conceded at home this season.
07:06Again, very few goals conceded at all.
07:09Is that what makes champions?
07:11The fact that you've got to be the defensive side?
07:13It doesn't matter what you did the other end of it.
07:15No, it does matter.
07:16Everything matters.
07:18You are able to do that because of the compromise
07:20and commitment of every single player that steps in there,
07:24but the same with attacking responsibility,
07:26the same with anything related to set pieces or transitions
07:29or availability, everything is as a whole.
07:33You need to sustain an incredible level throughout ten months
07:37and to that you need to have everything,
07:39otherwise you won't be able to do it.
07:42You've been asked a fair few times about victory offers.
07:46How big were we to beat Harry?
07:48Yeah, very good.
07:49I think everybody was so happy to see not only the goals,
07:52I think his overall performance, how free he looked,
07:55how happy he looked, the energy that he could transmit
07:58on that football pitch.
08:00That's exactly what we need.
08:01That's why we're signing.
08:02That's the type of player that can help us to make the difference
08:05and he certainly did that the other night.
08:07Someone not available tomorrow still spending his match down.
08:12Another thing to take off his bucket list today,
08:16being named in the England number 21 squad.
08:19It seems there is no holding this guy back.
08:22He's playing at four or five levels internationally above where he should be.
08:27Well, it's great news.
08:30I think he's very excited about that.
08:32And now it has another contribution to do with the national team.
08:35Unfortunately, he cannot play for us the next few games,
08:38but he will have the chance to play with the national team,
08:40which is great.
08:41One last one.
08:42You were unhappy about the second half in mid-week.
08:46He's already been pointed out.
08:47Some of the teams have all been challenging,
08:49like you for the Champions League,
08:51when they've really ramped up a number of goals.
08:54But you know it's got more goals in Como.
08:56Can I ask how you assess what Cesc Fabregas is doing?
09:01Well, amazing.
09:02It was a joy to watch them.
09:03I watched the highlights and what Cesc is doing.
09:07It's incredible what they're doing as a club as well.
09:09The whole vision, the way they are growing the whole club,
09:13their business, the vision behind it.
09:16It's great to witness.
09:17It's a great football story.
09:19They fully deserve what they're doing.
09:21And yeah, it's something to admire for sure.
09:24He's copying you in a way?
09:26No, I think he doesn't need to.
09:28I think Cesc has all the tools that he needs,
09:30all the experience, background to do what he's doing.
09:35And I'm very, very happy for him.
09:37Because I know him well.
09:38I know how much he loves the game
09:40and the way he thinks about the game.
09:42And yeah, I'm thrilled for him.
09:44And they fully deserve what they are.
09:46Mathias Hayden.
09:47Hi.
09:48You've spoken twice in the last couple of weeks
09:49about keeping images and clips of various things
09:52and files and technical areas and managers.
09:55Sorry, sorry?
09:56You've spoken about keeping big files and storage on shirt boards.
10:00It's one file. It's not big.
10:02OK.
10:02And you said about managers in the technical area too.
10:06No, no.
10:06I didn't say that.
10:08I talked about when they were asking me
10:10about the grabbing incident at Anfield.
10:12They said that I have a long story there that we can show as well.
10:15So that here is for everybody.
10:17It's not just in isolation.
10:18That's what I said.
10:19No, no, I agree.
10:20And I think we asked half a week ago when you said managers are out of the technical area
10:24much more than you.
10:26How long have you been keeping?
10:27Nothing.
10:28If I leave the technical area, it's my mistake.
10:30I'm wrong.
10:30That's it.
10:31Don't have to look at anybody else.
10:33The thing is, as we always say, let's be consistent.
10:35If you are out, you are out, and then it's a yellow.
10:38If it's one centimeter, you are out, you are out, then it has to be a yellow.
10:41Otherwise, it's sometimes yes, sometimes no.
10:43And that's why not this is only me.
10:44All of us, we get, okay, when is it then?
10:47When is yes and when no?
10:48And that's a collaboration that we need to have with everybody.
10:53Unless, yeah, we sit down there and that's it.
10:56I can't help it.
10:56I'm sorry.
10:57I will try to do my best, but I can't help it sometimes.
11:00I just asked one on Nonny.
11:01We saw in the last international break, when he wasn't in England,
11:04what a difference that made to his club, or maybe trying to prove a point.
11:07Do you think he can do that again after international?
11:10Yeah, but what he did is he went abroad and he trained.
11:14And he got somebody to train, and he wanted a program, and he wanted to do that.
11:18That's Nonny.
11:19And that's his mindset.
11:20He wants to get better.
11:22I love that action that he took, because on that moment he wasn't playing.
11:28So when he's playing and everybody's talking about it, it's easy to do.
11:31He was in a difficult moment that time.
11:33And what he did, helping to, after he started to be in the team,
11:37and I made the impact that he made.
11:38So I'm very happy with him.
11:41Tom, welcome back.
11:42Thanks.
11:43I'm Michael.
11:43Hi.
11:44I want to ask you a question about your full-backs.
11:47Richie, Piero, you've got them all available now.
11:49Ben and Juri.
11:51You've signed players in those positions,
11:53but also played at centre-half quite a lot in their careers.
11:56You've seen some successful clubs like PSG and Liverpool play
11:59very offensive-minded full-backs that attack like greenbacks do.
12:03What is it about this style of full-back that you like your system so much?
12:09Well, I think if there is a position in our team that the full-back occupy more space than anybody
12:14else,
12:15that's probably the full-back.
12:16And that's changed.
12:17And the game has changed from two or three years ago when we recruited certain profiles.
12:22But I don't know.
12:23I think you have to be a total player to play as a full-back nowadays.
12:26Before, they had just a corridor, a lane, and they had a duty to do,
12:30and now we have them so much.
12:32So, yeah, big thing.
12:34This is the last international break for the next transfer window.
12:37I'm curious that in the international breaks,
12:40you get to see players in different contexts that you might want to sign,
12:43players that may be playing alongside players of a higher calibre with their nations.
12:47Do you look at that and see the differences between the country?
12:51Yes, we do.
12:52And obviously, when we have the opportunity to talk to our players about some players
12:55that they share two or three weeks together with is a very valuable information, I think.
13:00We all do that.
13:03It is a big difference between, obviously, the Premier League and international football
13:06and what is there.
13:08But there's always a lot to learn.
13:12When you talk about adding kind of layers to players' games,
13:16but also the squad as a whole,
13:19those ideas, are those things you think of during the off-season?
13:22Do they come during the season?
13:24What's the process?
13:24Is it a simple thing or are those ideas fast?
13:27Well, the mission were to take a player into the next season.
13:31A lot of work is done over the summer.
13:33But then the reality as well is that sometimes you start to see things and feel things
13:38and especially when there are new relationships, which is what football is about,
13:41the relation between the players that are close and far to you.
13:46You start to think about other things and you start to develop a player maybe in a different way
13:51or somebody brings another idea or concept or vision about a player and you do that.
13:57So you never know.
13:58And sometimes it's just a necessity.
14:00We have an issue with certain players, with certain positions,
14:02and you just have to think out of the box to put a player in a different position and develop
14:07in that.
14:07Has that happened recently?
14:08I know when you talk about feeling things, you've mentioned Silva and Gabriel before,
14:14and I think Marlott's last season.
14:15Has that happened with anyone else in this sport?
14:18Well, with Mikel certainly when we started to play Massa 9,
14:22that was a big shift.
14:26We're not in the decision to try to play in a different space as well
14:29and in another side, that's another one.
14:32And yeah, let's be open.
14:37Back on Declan, obviously the assists have been one of the changes,
14:40but I guess another thing that seems to really shut up this season is the ball progression
14:45and you're dropping in deep a lot and getting involved in the builder.
14:49I wonder why you made that change and how you think it's helping the team?
14:54Because I think we cannot restrict his qualities and his capacities.
14:58And he can drop and he can progress play.
15:01He can drop and he can carry the ball.
15:02He can be incredible in transition.
15:04He can win duels.
15:06He can produce assists by arriving, by playing far, by crossing the ball left or right.
15:13It doesn't matter on set pieces.
15:16So he's got a lot to offer.
15:18His shooting ability from long range as well is something that we need to use more
15:23because he has the capacity to do it.
15:25So continue to go to play because it's still so much to gain.
15:29I mean, it seems like it adds something new every year.
15:33When you're sort of going back to the answer, when you're mapping out Declan's trajectory,
15:39you know, new contracts come, do you think about what a 30-year-old and 32-year-old?
15:44Do you and Declan talk about how you might evolve two or three years down the line?
15:48It must be an exciting conversation.
15:50We haven't been that far yet.
15:52Obviously, we have still a lot to do and period of a season, I think it's enough.
15:59There are other things apart of his role in the team or the club,
16:05which I think they can be visioned with a bit more time.
16:08But what is performance-wise and impacting the team, I think it has to be shorted some.
16:12It sounds like a light-axe.
16:14Sorry?
16:14It sounds like a light-axe.
16:17It was.
16:21Good afternoon, Michel.
16:23Hello.
16:23Last week, Liverpool fell to the footballer officially shot on the target.
16:28And a lot said about Arsenal's battle of the players.
16:31But I wanted to say to you, they're the same in football.
16:34Golden and James, defending the championship.
16:37And with that being said, do you feel like your management and coaching
16:40have enough recognition for the team?
16:43Does that sound like you?
16:47I don't know.
16:48I think the team certainly does.
16:50The club does.
16:52And that's it.
16:53And the players do.
16:54And that's primarily what we are looking for.
16:59Yeah.
16:59I have another question.
17:00But I feel very loved.
17:01I think very respected.
17:03And we have so much to do.
17:05So that's it.
17:07Okay.
17:08That finishes the live.
17:09We're going to see you.
17:09What if we make that scene?
17:09They get another sip.
17:10And if we have something, they're barely, again,
17:10If you leave the sewer in ink.
