Kondari Humpback Whale - A song honouring the Butchulla people of K'gari (Fraser Island), Queensland, Australia, and the annual return of the humpback whales.
In Butchulla language, Kondari is the name for the whale, meaning rainbow spirit. K'gari means 'paradise' in Butchulla language.
Each year, humpback whales migrate from Antarctica to the warm waters off K'gari and Hervey Bay, arriving around July to October to rest, mate and calve. For the Butchulla people, the Traditional Owners of K'gari who have cared for the island for an estimated 20,000 years, this annual return is part of a deep spiritual, cultural and custodial connection to sea, land and sky.
This song is a tribute to that return, to the whales as Kondari, and to the living culture of the Butchulla people of K'gari.
With respect to Butchulla Elders past and present.
Kondari - Humpback Whale is an original Australian song about Country, culture, wildlife and the whale migration to Queensland's Fraser Coast.
