Director Rian Johnson explains his creative choice to reveal details about detective Benoit Blanc's life through the cases he solves, rather than exploring his personal history through flashbacks or side stories.

00:00I'm curious about how much you choose to reveal about Benoit Blanc's personal life.
00:04We saw a little more of it in Glass Onion.
00:05He has a new haircut, which usually implies breakups.
00:09I hope they're all right. I love those two together.
00:13Yeah, I kind of have a real perspective on how do you die.
00:18I mean, for me, I feel that Benoit Blanc will always be the detective in these murder mystery movies.
00:24And that means I want to learn more about him through him solving these cases.
00:30And that usually means him forming a relationship with the protagonist, you know,
00:35Josh O'Connor's character in this one, Janelle's character in the last one,
00:39Anna D'Armas in the previous.
00:41So it's relationship-based, but it's very much him being the detective solving this case.
00:46I never can imagine going on, like, a little side street to learn more about him
00:51or doing a flashback or something.
00:54I think he's—ultimately, these are murder mysteries,
00:57and we want to see him show up and solve them.
