The Washington Commanders face a much tougher test against the Los Angeles Rams, and the margin for error is getting smaller. After an embarrassing start last week, the Commanders need to put together a much cleaner, more consistent performance if they want a chance to compete on Sunday.

On this edition of Keys to the Game, Chris Russell break down what Washington MUST do to slow down Matthew Stafford and the Rams' offense.

00:00so i wanted to start with uh this um keys to the game right um look last week i said
00:07because the opponent was a much lower variety the opponent this week of course as we all know
00:17is much better now that doesn't mean they're perfect uh at all that does not mean that
00:23but they are better than the eagles i think we all know that right so to me i decided to
00:33kind of like
00:33come up with something of course generic last week i said 55 good minutes and we know they were
00:39absolutely hideously awful could not have been any more dysfunctional any worse in that first
00:46quarter right not that they were great the rest of the game but they were much better
00:52the rest of the game but they were absolutely hideously awful in that first quarter i mean
00:58everything the back-to-back false starts cosme and jade uh they had an illegal man downfield they had
01:04a kickoff go through rashad white's hands that cost them 15 yards they had a drop they had a turnover
01:13and a missed field goal they were absolutely awful embarrassing it was so humiliating i i just can't
01:24even explain how they could come out that bad this week obviously you can't get away with an entire bad
01:35quarter right now a quarter in the nfl is 15 minutes so i started to think about that i said
01:42mom
01:43is it impossible to ask them to come out and play you know like a lot of people that do
01:50what we do
01:50for a living say well i just play 60 good minutes kind of impossible to expect that especially this outfit
01:57so i said 55 good minutes this week i'm gonna lower that that's right because they haven't proven to me
02:10that they can head in the right direction sustainably and again the problem is getting worse
02:17but also the opponent is getting harder so i'm asking for 50 really good minutes
02:27i'm gonna lower the bar a little bit from 55 to 50 but i'm asking for 50 really competitive
02:34quality clean minutes what do i mean by that obviously again it's not that you can't make a
02:41mistake but can we very much limit the mistakes during that 50 minute period whenever it comes
02:47and again ideally it would come it would be more than 50 minutes ideally it would not be all
02:55after a terrible first 10 minutes ideally it would not be oh you just stop playing good quality
03:00football with 10 minutes left to go in the game and the ram storm back and win one somehow some
03:06way
03:07they're gonna have to balance that out okay but 50 really good minutes is not impossible
03:17we're not asking you to be better than the rams we're asking you not to kill yourself
03:24to not be terrible
03:32that's it's it's just not that hard to ask for it's not you're professionals you're highly paid
03:40you don't work that hard trust me you don't
03:46do you think you work hard you don't work that hard
03:52like it's not that much to ask for hey man if you lose because the rams are a better team
03:59and because they have matthew freaking stafford and puka nakua and sean mcveigh and miles garrett
04:05and aaron donald and trent mcduffie and all of these guys if you lose fine man like everybody
04:13would kind of understand that if you shoot yourself in every toe on your two feet during the game
04:24in one quarter of the game in the last part of the game what have you nobody's going to be
04:31able
04:31to process that nobody's going to be able to handle that because again the writing on the wall
04:37the evidence the data the statistics for all you number knuckleheads all show and and our eyes tell us
04:46that the problem is not getting better it's only getting worse
04:51only getting worse
04:56so 50 really good minutes and you want to give us one and then we'll take a time out and
05:01then we'll
05:01mix in some calls and some more keys um for me again 50 really good minutes again i don't know
05:07how to parse that out in terms of whether i want it to be the first 50 and then fall
05:11apart in the last
05:1210 minutes or a slow first five uh and then a wobbly last five i i don't know i'm just
05:20trying to lower
05:20the bar to match the expectation level of a team that has not proven that they are capable of figuring
05:28it out yet yeah no i mean that's a that's a really good key um i think my key and
05:34this is more so a
05:35defensive key as opposed to a team or offensive key um i'm going with we gotta continue to let
05:43matthew stafford you know throw the check down not necessarily push the ball down the field ever
05:49since davante adams went down he has not been able to you know push the ball down the field
05:55and you know for these deep crossers and you know deep in routes yeah because they don't have the
06:00personnel or they just don't have people getting over we look we look at also nakua doesn't really i
06:06mean he can run those routes but they prefer even when everything is clicking they like to get him the
06:12ball quick early and then get yak right no i mean yeah he does get the like he does get
06:18the ball out
06:18but also when you look at um matthew stafford's um career his yards per pass attempt like the first
06:27four weeks it was at nine it's now down to like five something so like i don't think he's been
06:32able
06:32to really be as explosive as that offense uh usually is so that's that's more so like what i would
06:38say
06:38and i think having him check the ball down now you're limiting the explosive you're not really
06:44allowing puka to get off and last time we saw a really good you know wide receiver one in j
06:51jsn
06:52he got off 10 catches 14 targets 128 yards two tuts like we cannot we can't allow puka to get
07:00off
07:00in that manner so um again let's make sure matthew stafford doesn't have that luxury of being able to
07:06push the ball down the field yeah i i mean i agree and i think it's just as important to
07:12because
07:13his elbow is hurting because the commanders can generate the pass rush because there's no davante
07:20adams because they like to try and again get the ball and move the ball in little chunks it's a
07:26yards
07:26after catch type attack and puka is very very capable of catching a little five yard option route
07:34or little slant route or shallow cross or something like that and then turning it in
07:39to something big if he's in the right space or if you miss tackles which hasn't been as big of
07:46a
07:46problem this year for this team as it was last year but still could be an issue uh we will
07:51see
07:52all right before we get into a um defensive key to the game because i gave you you know an
07:58overall
07:59arching one and explained all that so anthony brett just brought up matthew stafford and
08:05obviously they're not the same offense without davante adams and we know how good davante adams is
08:11on those 50 50 back shoulder fade stuff red zone so that's going to help right not to say that
08:18nikua isn't really good in the red zone of course but stafford is banged up so it's very likely without
08:25davante adams on the road stafford banged up that they're going to try and get rid of the football
08:32as quickly you would think as you can because you've got to somewhat negate the commander's pass rush
08:37which last week granted against a lesser offensive line and obviously a third string quarterback who is
08:44now benched they got pressure 83 of the time so stafford you would think and mcfay
08:54gonna try and counter that right otherwise that's gonna be trouble so stafford um he's got you know
09:04for you number knuckleheads he's got a 5.09 total epa whatever epa play per play 0.02
09:11a success rate of 48.6 percent a passing epa of 15.49 uh an epa per pass of 0
09:22.05 these are all fine
09:23numbers pass success percentage 49.8 percent okay so i'm just giving you the lay of the land here he's
09:32completed 67.3 percent 15 touchdowns eight interceptions yeah
09:41the key i think to counter what i expect out of the rams is to get quick pressure one okay
09:53but like
09:55last week they were at 83 percent pressure rate which was exorbitant they've got to get pressure
10:0360 plus percent of the time on stafford how do you get quick pressure well to me this is me
10:10i don't know
10:11if durante will do this i would show a lot of send the house type blitzes i would show more
10:19cover zero
10:21looks maybe you drop out of some of them but i would what i would like the commanders to do
10:29is not just say oh well hey we got pressure 83 percent of the time last week that's going to
10:35be
10:35the same every week because that's not that's not so they didn't blitz a lot last week i'm going to
10:45let anthony kind of talk a little bit about that but when they did they were effective but how do
10:53you
10:53do that against a hall of famer and a genius of a play caller with a much better receiver a
11:01better
11:02offensive line better tight ends and better running backs you got to do it quick man quick pressure rate
11:09like there's pressure and then there's quick pressure rate affect the throws get in his face
11:15get your hands up clog the throwing lanes because they're going to try and get rid of the football
11:21quick and i mean i think that's pretty elementary do you want to see them blitz a lot more in
11:26this
11:26game or no i don't want to see them blitz i think what they did last week in terms of
11:31only blitzing 12
11:32times they blitzed 12 times and they were able to generate 10 pressures one sack granted i would love to
11:38see them get more on the 12 blitzes yeah 10 pressures on the 12 12 yeah 10 pressures one sack
11:44my thing is again we're getting the pressure but we're not getting home we're not sacking you know
11:50the quarterback but again we were able to limit tanner mckee tanner mckee isn't matthew stafford though
11:56right he's dealt with pressure before so i think we got to be able to get home so in this
12:01game i wouldn't
12:02want to blitz more um just because matthew stafford he's seen all this before like i don't want us to
12:09get exploited because we're trying to be ultra aggressive to a guy that you know has seen all
12:15of this before is it too much though to show what i was talking about i agree with you i
12:19think we
12:19should show okay i think we should show um that like a lot and maybe drop out of it yeah
12:24right and
12:24then drop yeah i don't think we need you know a ton of zero blitzes and all i'd rather not
12:31do that
12:31they have a guy in puka nukua that is dangerous as they come so um i think sort of kind
12:37of what we
12:37did last year blitzing five blitzing six like we don't necessarily have to send the full house
12:42every single time and then drop an offensive coverage i'm gonna give you another element
12:46right after the break here at the top of the hour and then we'll get to your calls i know
12:50we'll get to your calls um about dropping out and why i think showing loaded fronts might be a good
12:57thing in this particular game another element that matthew stafford is known for in just a couple of
13:04minutes good good points by anthony there uh hopefully some good points by me hopefully some
13:09good points ahead from you what do you expect on sunday against the la rams for the washington
13:14commanders i said 50 really good minutes is that too much to ask your thoughts on that and how to
13:20attack matthew stafford sean mcveigh and the rams 301-230-0980 timeout here uh approaching four o'clock in the
13:27nation's capital rooster radio on the team 980
