00:25Dear Lawrence,
00:26I just finished writing my big new novel about your cabin in Big Sur.
00:31Everyone's in it.
00:32Neil, Carolyn, McClure, and you too, Pops.
00:36My first novel since Road was published in 1957.
00:40Four years of drunken chaos was the cause.
00:44Well, let me hear from you, Smiler.
00:46As ever, Jack.
00:59There's no chance with everybody yakking.
01:02Too many people now want to talk to us and tell us their stories.
01:06We've been hemmed in and surrounded and outnumbered.
01:10Circles closed in on the old heroes of the night.
01:17He did hit nerves at times.
01:20I would say it was based on observation.
01:24It was based on imagination.
01:25It was based on Benzedrine also.
01:29Oh, Jack.
01:31Jack, Jack, Jack.
01:34Jack gives you the gift of the way he sees things,
01:37smells things, touches things, knows things,
01:40hears things, and he presents it to you.
01:42And you look at it and you think, well, I was there.
01:44That's really interesting.
01:46He saw it just a little bit differently.
01:49He wanted to devour life.
01:51And yet, it's like, you know,
01:54it's like wanting to ride a motorcycle as fast as you can,
01:56but having this big Catholic parachute on the back of you
01:59that's always kind of dragging you down.
02:05Well, sometimes when I read them, I get sad,
02:07and I think, oh, man.
02:10This is an ugly, ugly book of ugly places in the mind,
02:14you know, of sordid places in the psyche.
02:18I see Big Sur as a miracle novel.
02:24He miraculously took the highest points of literature
02:31and used them to fuel the descriptions of what he experienced.
02:40One fast move, or I'm gone.
02:46I see anything when certain things were like there,
02:47you can go in for a pair.
02:48And click the same sensual masochiga off into your soul.
02:48Save the board.
02:48In the meantime,
02:50that's about to run where you are,
02:50as patriotism and that you can catch it up every time.
02:50and earth remains space.
