A hernia problem has left England batsman Kevin Pietersen out of the cricket World Cup.

He is due to return to the UK in the next 24 hours due to the injury which first emerged during the recent one-day series in Australia.

On Twitter, Pietersen wrote: "Sad to leave India..Love the people & the hospitality!"

News that Pietersen's World Cup was over emerged while the England squad were en route from India to Bangladesh for their next match on Friday.

The operation will require around six weeks of recovery, and is expected to rule the batsman out of the Indian Premier League which is held after the World Cup.

However, should Pietersen undergo surgery in the coming days it is possible he could be fit by the end of April and therefore play some part for his IPL employers the Deccan Chargers.

The England Cricket Board have applied to the ICC to call up Eoin Morgan as Pietersen's replacement.
