A U.S. soldier is sentenced to 10 years in prison by a South Korean court for raping a local teenage girl.
It is one of the heaviest punishments given to an American serviceman stationed on the divided peninsula.
The private in the 2nd US infantry Division was indicted in September.
He was charged with sexually assaulting the 18-year-old girl about 35 km north of Seoul.
The court refused to identify the soldier in case of an appeal.
It was not clear if the convicted man would do so.
The United States has about 28,000 troops in South Korea in the allies' defence against North Korea.
