ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)
STORY: Pop star Madonna has stepped behind the camera to make her feature film directorial debut with the new movie W.E. The 53-year-old attended a special screening of the movie at New York's Museum of Modern Art on Sunday night (December 3).
In the film Madonna mixes a bit of history with fiction to tell the love story of Wallis Simpson and King Edward. Madonna has had a long-standing curiosity with the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and spent two years doing research for the film.
Although this is her first attempt at directing a feature film, the singer said her past relationships and friends taught her a lot about heading up a film crew.
In order to help tell the story, the Material Girl encapsulated the tale around the 1998 Sotheby's auction, in which the estate of the couple was sold. A fictional character named Wally, played by Abbie Cornish, whose life somewhat mirrors Wallis, is part of what attracted actress Andrea Riseborough to the script.
W.E. is scheduled to be released in the U.S. on February 3, 2012.
