Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak arrives at a Cairo courthouse by ambulance.
Last week, a judge gave the prosecution and defense until February 16 to make their cases in the trial.
The prosecution have demanded the maximum penalty - the death sentence - for Mubarak and his former Interior Minister Habib el-Adli, for their role in the killing of protesters during last year's revolution.
But many expect the multitude of witnesses, the complexity of charges and the prosecution's difficulty in obtaining evidence from security services could make it easier for defense lawyers to push for a lighter sentence.
Mubarak and el-Adli deny responsibility for protesters' deaths.
