People line up outside Japan's imperial palace in Tokyo, where they write get well-cards for the nation's 78-year-old monarch, Emperor Akihito.
He underwent heart bypass surgery on Saturday - an operation that took about four hours.
Doctors say the emperor, who has been battling heart problems for a year, is doing well and is expected to make a full recovery.
Akihito has a history of health problems, including prostate cancer and what the imperial palace has called stress-related issues.
He is expected to remain in hospital for the next two weeks.
