Parts of Krobokan jail on the Indonesian resort island of Bali have been reduced to charred wreckage after rioting inmates seized the prison and set fire to offices.

Police stormed the jail to regain control on Wednesday, a day after the trouble started.

Some injured prisoners were taken away by ambulance.

At least two were earlier shot in the legs by police who were confronted by a mob wielding sickles and hurling bricks.

Authorities turned off electricity to the prison as part of the operation to re-take control.

Water cannon were also brought in.

Police later displayed rifles which they said had been snatched by the prisoners from warders during the riot.

Tensions rose among the jail's 1, 200 inmates after a knife-fight between two of them about a week ago.

That created a split in the wider prison population that developed into a bigger fight between two rival groups.
