Scuffles break out between Palestinians and Israeli forces on the annual Land Day protests.

Land Day marks the deaths of six Arab protesters killed by security forces in 1976, during demonstrations against Israeli plans to confiscate land in Galilee.

After deadly clashes last year, Israeli forces are taking no chances this year.

Here in Jerusalem, men younger than 40 are barred from attending Friday prayers at Al Aqsa Mosque.

Several were arrested and at least two injured in the ensuing clashes.

In the West Bank, Israeli troops keep a close eye on young stone-hurling Palestinians in the Qalandiya crossing out of Ramallah while in Bethlehem troops are also out in force to monitor demonstrators.

In southern Lebanon, hundreds gather under heavy security near the Israeli border to mark the day.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) PALESTINIAN PROTESTER, ABU SALAH, SAYING:

''To me, this day means the day of holding on to my land, and the right of return, and the liberation of all of Palestine, and returning to it.''

There were more protests on the Jordanian Israeli border - which included Jews from the movement Jews United Against Zionism calling for an end to the occupation.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) RABBI DAVID FELDMAN, SAYING:

"We are here to say that the occupation of Jerusalem, the occupation in Palestine is wrong. This is not Judaism, this is not the voice of Jews. This is a catastrophe for the Palestinian people. We may not allow this to continue."

Palestinian organisers called for a 'global march' to Jerusalem and peaceful rallies to protest against Israeli policies towards Palestinians.
