Hong Kong broadcaster Cable TV showed images of angry mobs chanting anti-Japan slogans, waving Chinese flags and smashing up and overturning several vehicles, while the authorities seemingly looked on.
A Reuters photographer said later he witnessed several people being led away by police during the protest, as they tried to break through police cordons.
