A Republican upset in a historically Democratic congressional district of New York City rattled Democrats and a besieged President Barack Obama going into November 2012 elections.
Republican Bob Turner won 54 per cent of the vote to Democrat David Weprin's 46 per cent, handing the seat to Republicans for the first time since the 1920s.
Some analysts are attributing the republican win to former Democratic congressmen Anthony Weiner's sexting scandal, the US' ailing economy and President Obama's shaky relationship with Israel.
