Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said during a TV interview that Turkey has had a direct role in the continued violence and bloodshed in Syria.

(SOUNDBITE)(Arabic) SYRIAN PRESIDENT, BASHAR AL-ASSAD, SAYING:

"The Turkish stance is known. Turkey bares direct responsibility for the blood shed in Syria.

"...every person who goes out of the country is finished politically for one simple reason, the Syrian people do not respect those who flee. Those who flee are done."

Assad's statements come amid another day of intense violence near the capital Damascus.

In unverified video obtained from a social media website, plumes of smoke litter the skyline.

Opposition activists say government troops killed at least 27 people in eastern neighbourhoods around the capital.

The attacks prompted thousands of people to flee the area, activists say-- the largest exodus since the revolt began 17 months ago.
