At least eight workers died when a fire broke out in an oil sludge-processing plant on Saturday in the West Siberian region of Khanty-Mansiisk, the hinterland of Russian crude production, the Emergencies Ministry said.

The fire at the sludge storage facility had been put out, the ministry said in a statement.

Investigators said the fire could have been caused by an explosion.
