Thousands of landless poor from across India march toward the country's capital, New Dehli.

It's part of an effort to step up pressure on India's government, which demonstrators accuse of seizing land from peasants and tribes people.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) CAMPAIGN LEADER AND MEMBER OF NATIONAL LAND REFORMS COUNCIL, RAJAGOPAL P.V. SAYING:

"You take huge quantum of land for the corporate sector and builders but you have no land for the poor people, so this is a discrimination that we want to fight."

Some 25,000 people are participating in the 350km march, which started Tuesday in the city of Gwalior.

The protesters say they will not give up until the government agrees to a more "fair" distribution of land.

(SOUNDBITE) (Hindi) MARCH PARTICIPANT, SOONA RAM SAYING:

"If the government will not listen to us and not fulfill our demands then we will not come back from Delhi. In any case, we are dying, so we might as well die there."

Property has become a major political issue in India, where officials are trying to strike a balance between industry and agriculture.
