Vivendi's SFR telecoms unit has announced a voluntary redundancy plan to shed 856 jobs.
Unions are due to meet management in early December to discuss terms.
The layoffs will cover all divisions except customer services.
French media report that the layoff plan will offer 2 and a half years of salary for those who have been with the company for a decade.
