It's Steinbrück versus Merkel next year

In Germany the opposition Social Democrats have formally named Peer Steinbrück as their candidate to challenge Angela Merkel as Chancellor next September.

At a special SPD conference the former finance minister promised a more just society, which he said has been knocked out of balance by Merkel's handling of the financial crisis.
