00:04We've got a great show for you tonight.
00:05Before I get started, I'd like to introduce a few folks to you.

00:36The original In Living Color, Fly Girl,
00:38is someone who is beautiful,
00:40has a gorgeous body,
00:42and has her own personal style.
00:44Somebody that has their self together,
00:47he's got all the moves.
00:49The kind of girl every man dreams of having,
00:53and the kind of girl every girl dreams of being.
00:56That's a Fly Girl.
00:57You want all the moves float like a balloon.
00:59You see, it's never too late, and it's never too soon.

01:05And how would you feel knowing prejudice was obsolete?
01:07And all mankind danced to the exact beat,
01:09and at night it was safe to walk down the street.

01:19We want to introduce you to the lady behind all the steps on the show,
01:26and her sister right here, that's Rosie Perez.
01:29My first season of Living Color was hectic.
01:32It was crazy.
01:33I was putting in 10 to 12 hours a day.
01:35And because I had to pick the music, edit the music, clear the licensing for the music,
01:44pick the guests, the performing guests, and then teach the Fly Girls the numbers.
01:48And everyone was so new to the business in kind of sort of a way.
01:52And it was just kinetic, the energy there.
01:56It was electric.
01:57And hip hop was huge in New York, and it was huge in the music,
02:01but it wasn't huge in the mainstream.
02:04I told Keenan, I said, they don't know how to do it.
02:07And he goes, well then that's your job to teach them how to do it.
02:10I was a technical dancer.
02:12I didn't know what hip hop was, but I think if you start out doing like ballet,
02:18it's kind of like the core of dancing, I think you can do anything.
02:21All the girls had, you know, kind of dance backgrounds.
02:24So for me it was pretty interesting to just mix like my kind of street dancing or hip hop dancing
02:32with more of the technical stuff, which is what Rosie did.
02:40We only had four days to teach them eight numbers.
02:43And even though they were only 30 second spots, still they had to be all unique on their own.
02:49And it was crazy.
02:51There was a lot of times I could hear the fly girls cursing me out under their breath.
02:55She was definitely a drill sergeant.
02:58Don't let her tell you otherwise, okay?
03:01Do that T-drop.
03:02Do that step right there.
03:03We worked harder than everybody on In Living Color.
03:06Let's just say that.
03:08We worked from first thing in the morning till the wee hours at night.
03:12Had them doing flips.
03:13We had them twisting their bodies here and there and just rolling all over the floor.
03:17And it was, it was fantastic.
03:22I had caught lunch from Keenan, Ivy Wayans.
03:24But the FCC, the sensors would come in and they can't hump.
03:28They can't hump on the ground.
03:29I go, can they hump on the air?
03:30No, they can't hump on the air.
03:31They can't hump on the ground.
03:32I said, well, can they hump on the risers?
03:34No humping.
03:35I said, okay, how about pumping?
03:36You know, okay, pumping is allowed.
03:38Okay, girls, no humping for pumping.
03:40Nobody had ever seen this before and I think Keenan was like, you know, you're gonna set, you know, you're gonna set a standard for dancers out there.
03:52And nobody, I think other than like solid gold, they had something where the dancers were like put out front.
03:58The Fly Girls just took off.
04:00We had a lot of people watching us and doing everything that we did.
04:05They wanted to dress like us.
04:06They wanted to be, you know, be like us.
04:08So they, they knew we were like a special group and they wanted us to know it too.
04:13I was just excited that Keenan had enough faith in me to bring hip hop to the mass media.
04:21The fact that, you know, we got so much play in the beginning, if that, I think that's the most that I'm proud of.
04:30To all be doing what we love to do and letting, you know, America see us at our best.
04:38They were just awesome girls.
04:40They taught me a lot about dance and choreography.
04:44I never admitted that to them ever, but they did.
04:50It was a team effort.
04:51It wasn't just Rosie Perez's Fly Girls.
04:54It was In Living Color's Fly Girls because we all collaborated.
04:57And that's why it was so great.
