Punch-kun was born on 26 July 2025, weighing just 500 grams. His mother, suffering from stress after her first birth during the heat of summer, showed no signs of caring for him, a rare but documented occurrence in macaques. From the very next day, zoo staff began hand-rearing him with milk feeds, providing an orange plush orangutan doll as a surrogate companion.
