00:00:00Poor House Blues, an original by Nat Pierce, arranged by Nat Pierce, and then The Good
00:00:06Earth, the original arrangement by Neil Hefty, Sidewalks of Cuba, I don't know who arranged
00:00:14that one, that's one of the old ones though, and I Can't Get Started, and Bijou, you'll
00:00:21remember that one, and finally Apple Honey, which is a lot faster than the Old Columbia
00:00:26album. Now, as far as solos go, let's see, let's start with, well, let me just call them
00:00:38out from the notes here. On Apple Honey, of course, you'll hear Sal Nistico playing a good
00:00:44chunk of the tenor. In fact, he has most of the tenor work on the whole album, with the
00:00:50exception of a very good Andy McGee tennis solo on Poor House Blues. There's some very
00:00:58good trumpet work throughout the album by Billy Hunt. Nat Pierce is on piano, Jake Hanna is
00:01:07on drums, Chuck Andrus on bass. Now, of course, you'll have a chance here to compare this great
00:01:17herd. Incidentally, this is the album where most of these things were recorded two years ago,
00:01:23where Woody's band was at its real peak. Since then, a lot of the fellas have departed, as I told
00:01:29you. So anyway, on trombone, on Bijou, you'll hear Phil Wilson, Bill Chase plays trumpet on
00:01:36I Can't Get Started, and for the most part, I think that takes care of the outstanding solo work
00:01:44on the album. Many questions you have, you can give me a call. Well, let me know. I was going
00:01:50to say,
00:01:50give me a call. Don't give me a call. But let me know on the next tape, and I'll give
00:01:57you
00:01:57additional information. But anyway, here's Woody's Big Band Goodies on Philips. This has to be a gem of
00:02:03an album now, as far as the big band sound goes, because there are no more big bands going around
00:02:09outside of Woody and Basie and Ellington, and a couple of minor bands, such as Les Elgard. We
00:02:18wouldn't even bother talking about those. So anyway, here's one of the last of the great big bands,
00:02:25Woody Herman.
00:02:26Woody Herman.
00:02:26Oh.
01:22:08We're right back.
