00:05These small screen characters showed true courage.
00:08You're fired.
00:16Is this because I'm a lesbian?
00:18Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we're counting down our picks for the top 10 coming-out-of-the-closet
00:24TV scenes.
00:25Her name's Veronica. But Veronica's a girl's name. Did you know that?
00:31I'm marrying a woman. I'm... I'm gay.
00:36For this list, we ranked the best and most memorable scenes on TV where a character came out of the
00:42closet about his or her sexuality.
00:45Yeah. I'm gay. I just don't usually say it like that.
00:54How do you usually say it?
00:55I don't usually say it.
00:58As usual, we are limiting it to one per series.
01:01Okay, don't act like you didn't have to explain that because that made no sense at all.
01:04Number 10. Callie Torres, Grey's Anatomy.
01:07Dad, this is Arizona Robbins. This is who I'm dating now.
01:14While this medical drama has plenty of happy moments, things aren't all good all the time.
01:19And the admission of this orthopedic surgeon's true sexuality to her father certainly wasn't.
01:24You'll fly home with me today. I'll talk to the chief and explain the circumstances.
01:28What? No, no, Dad, no. I'm not moving back home.
01:30Don't worry. Everything's gonna be okay.
01:33Everything is okay.
01:34Okay.
01:35We first witness her bisexual interests in her relationship with cardiothoracic surgeon Erica Hahn.
01:40You do know what I'm gonna live for.
01:45She later starts dating Arizona Robbins and, although the two hit it off,
01:49Callie's declaration of their relationship to Mr. Torres strains things between father and child.
01:54I mean, if you can't accept me for who I am, I cut him off.
02:03As shown in Sweet Surrender, he's not the most understanding type.
02:06And his strict Catholicism means he does not take the news well.
02:10But it's still a memorable episode nonetheless.
02:14I mean, you're supposed to love me no matter what.
02:16That's what a parent does.
02:19Number 9. Justin Suarez, Ugly Betty.
02:22I get it. It's okay, but, you know, if I do go, no one would have to know anything.
02:27Although this character often seemed stereotypically gay due to his interests in fashion and Broadway,
02:32it took him nearly four full seasons of the show for him to finally tell his family.
02:37We told him to come here after class, and when he walks in, we're all gonna shout,
02:40We know you're gay and that's okay!
02:43He has a gay mentor in Mark, but he still can't quite bring himself to tell all.
02:48You don't have to say a word until you're ready.
02:51Once he decides it's time though, he reveals the truth in moving fashion,
02:55by taking the dance floor with his boyfriend Austin at his mother's wedding.
02:59Don't even think about saying goodbye, cause I just want one love.
03:07Number 8. Mickey Milkovich, Shameless.
03:10I understand better than anyone that you're afraid of your father, you're afraid of your wife, you're afraid to be
03:17who you are.
03:18Some choose to come out quietly, but others are much more aggressive about it.
03:22And this character, from the American remake of the British series Shameless, is certainly in the latter camp.
03:28He keeps his relationship with Ian's secret for a long time, in large part due to his insane father Terry.
03:34Listen to me Mickey, your dad is an evil, psychotic prick.
03:41You're just gonna let him ruin your life?
03:42You'll throw the f*** up.
03:43In season 3, the senior Milkovich caught his son having sex with Ian, and forced Mickey to sleep with and
03:49marry a prostitute.
03:55Things come to a head during the next season though, when pressure from his wife and Ian, leads Mickey to
04:01tell the truth to everyone attending his son's christening at a local bar.
04:05Can I get everybody's attention please?
04:09I just want everybody here to know, I'm f***ing gay.
04:13The results are catastrophic, especially considering the violent and homophobic Terry is in attendance.
04:26Number 7. Max Bloom, Happy Endings.
04:29Two sluts and a Nazi?
04:31What are you into Max?
04:32Uh, dudes.
04:36I'm into guys.
04:38What did he say?
04:39Luckily for this character, the conclusion to him coming out to his folks was exactly the name of the sitcom
04:44in which he's featured.
04:45Sweetheart, you never need to be scared to tell us anything.
04:49What matters to us is that you're happy, and that you're surrounded by people who love you.
04:55Although Max Bloom appeared comfortable with his sexuality from the minute we met him, he'd yet to tell his parents
05:01at the beginning of the first season.
05:03In fact, he even told them that the gay porn under his mattress belonged to his buddy Dave.
05:08Look, in college, my parents found my porn underneath my mattress, and I panicked, I said it was yours.
05:13Why would my porn be under your mattress?
05:15I panicked again, and I said that you used to lie in my bed and were obsessed with me.
05:19You're not good under pressure.
05:20Don't you think I know that?
05:21Thankfully, Mr. and Mrs. Bloom end up being A-OK with everything, and they even tried to set their son
05:27up with some of their friends' gay sons.
05:29Oh, you know who's gay is Rhoda Kaplan's son, and he owns a discotheque.
05:33Oh, and Irma Schaffer's son just came out.
05:35He has three kids.
05:37Howie, we'd have grandchildren.
05:39Number 6.
05:41Jack McPhee, Dawson's Creek.
05:42Are you gay, Jack?
05:47Would you care?
05:50That is not an answer.
05:51Even if it weren't an amazing scene in and of itself, we'd still pretty much have to include this character
05:57on our list,
05:57because he broke ground by taking part in the first gay male kiss aired on U.S. Network TV.
06:03Well, this...
06:07Before that though, Jack McPhee reveals his sexuality to his father and friends,
06:11and it's an especially poignant moment considering his budding romance with Joey.
06:16Ask me the question again!
06:20Ask me if I'm gay!
06:22Unfortunately, Mr. McPhee denies the truth, making for a sad but moving scene of television.
06:28You are not gay.
06:29Yes, I am!
06:33You know it!
06:35Number 5.
06:36Emily Fields, Pretty Little Liars.
06:39I'm gay.
06:45I'm gay.
06:47Next on our list, sadly, is another unhappy coming out.
06:51After the teenage swimmer Emily Fields tells her father the truth,
06:55he tells her mother, who doesn't take the news so well.
06:58How are we gonna fix this?
07:00Fix it?
07:02This is not like buying her braces.
07:05This is who she is.
07:07Luckily for Emily, her friends are quite a bit more supportive.
07:11But, it's not until Mrs. Fields gets her daughter's girlfriend Maya out of the picture in a later episode,
07:17that she can begin to accept Emily for who she is.
07:19You're no longer allowed to see her.
07:21You can't do that.
07:23Watch me.
07:24This doesn't change the way I feel about her.
07:26However, it's the coming out episode we're concerned with here.
07:29And while we feel bad for Emily in Moments Later, we certainly admire her.
07:34I'm not okay with it.
07:39The whole thing makes me sick.
07:42Sick to my stomach.
07:43Number 4.
07:44Willow Rosenberg, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
07:47It's complicated.
07:50Because of Tara.
07:51This Scooby gang member was a long time fan favorite on the show.
07:55And we appreciated her even more for her relationship with Tara.
07:59You have to be the person you love.
08:05I am.
08:07Although she previously dates the werewolf Oz, she eventually falls for Tara.
08:11Forming one of the first all female couples on American TV.
08:23As she makes clear to Buffy when she comes out to her though,
08:26she's just in love with this person.
08:28And doesn't identify as a lesbian.
08:30And this makes her admission all the more powerful.
08:44I'm happy.
08:45Number 3.
08:46Oscar Martinez, The Office.
08:48No, that is the fun of this place.
08:50I call everybody faggy.
08:52Why would anyone find that offensive?
08:53Michael Scott has never been the most politically correct guy.
08:56And his treatment of this character didn't help his reputation.
08:59Okay, I think Oscar would just like if he's lame or something like that.
09:02That's what faggy means.
09:04No, not really.
09:05After calling Oscar faggy, Michael then apologizes to him in front of everyone.
09:10Ensuring that the accountant's sexuality is now public information.
09:14Oscar, why don't you take this opportunity to officially come out to everybody here.
09:20However you want to do it.
09:23Go ahead.
09:25Stand up.
09:26The boss's later kissing of Oscar, in an attempt to fix things, reveals Michael's true stupidity.
09:32But it also makes for a hilarious scene.
09:39Things work out just fine for Oscar though.
09:41Since he's offered three months of paid vacation, and the company car,
09:45so that he doesn't sue Dunder Mifflin for everything that's happened.
09:48All I had to do was sign something saying I won't sue.
09:52Gill and I are going to Europe.
09:55Kids, sometimes it pays to be gay.
09:58Number 2.
09:59Kurt Hummel, Glee.
10:00Dad, I have something that I want to say.
10:07Although this character's father doesn't completely accept his coming out,
10:10this fact makes this scene from Glee no less powerful.
10:14And what I am, is, I'm gay.
10:23As Mr. Hummel explains, he never doubted his son's sexuality due to Kurt's proclivity towards feminine clothing.
10:29But he still can't quite wrap his head around the idea.
10:32I know.
10:34Really?
10:35I've known since you were three.
10:38All you wanted for your birthday was a pair of sensible heels.
10:41Despite this, he's clearly trying, which makes for a moving scene.
10:45I guess I'm not totally in love with the idea, but...
10:49If that's who you are, there's nothing I can do about it.
10:54And I love you just as much.
10:55Even better, show creator Ryan Murphy took the scene from his life,
10:59thus explaining its realistic feel.
11:01You sure, right?
11:04Yeah, I'm sure.
11:05I'm just checking.
11:09Before we unveil our number one pick, here are some honorable mentions.
11:21I'm Jude.
11:23And I'm gay.
11:25You know what?
11:26I don't think I can keep doing this.
11:29I know.
11:30You won't have to.
11:32Promise.
11:33Because I am super gay.
11:35For you.
11:36Yes, Roxy is gay.
11:39At least she was when we were together.
11:40Are you in school?
11:42Yes.
11:43Oh, you heard rumors.
11:45No, I have first-hand knowledge.
11:47I'm gay.
11:55Good.
12:00So, you want anything?
12:02Straight up.
12:03Do you like dudes?
12:09Yes, I do.
12:12One in particular.
12:13Well, somebody owes me money.
12:15Number one.
12:16Ellen Morgan, Ellen.
12:17So, that's basically it.
12:19You know, no major problems, nothing pressing.
12:21What kind of vibe do you get from me?
12:23We had to give this scene the top spot on our list, due to its awesome real-life parallels.
12:28Actress and comedian Ellen DeGeneres came out publicly to Oprah on her talk show.
12:33And this was followed the same day by her character coming out on her sitcom tour therapist,
12:38played by, you guessed it, Oprah herself.
12:41Has there ever been anyone you felt you clicked with?
12:46And what was his name?
12:49Susan.
12:49Given the year of its broadcast, the episode set a powerful precedent for LGBT characters on TV that would soon
12:57be matched, as we've seen.
12:58Susan.
13:00I'm gay.
13:03Still, Ellen's frankness and self-comfort make this scene the gold standard of them all.
13:09Well, I'm sorry. I don't know what else to do. I was scared, I was ashamed, and now that it's
13:13out, you know what? It's funny.
13:16Do you agree with our list?
13:20I did that double spit take to illustrate how insane you sound right now.
13:23What coming out of the closet TV scene inspired you?
13:26I can't imagine why everyone thinks you're the sweet one.

13:35We're not gonna do that.
13:48We've gotta try out of the closet.
