Transcript
00:00My name is Auggie Pullman.
00:02I know I'm not an ordinary ten-year-old kid.
00:04I was with my two kids in front of an ice cream store,
00:08and we had a very close encounter with a child who had a very severe facial difference.
00:13That night, Natalie Merchant's song, Wonder, came on the radio.
00:21And what had happened earlier in the day just kind of clicked for me,
00:24and I thought, okay, I'm going to write a book, and it's going to be called Wonder,
00:27and it's going to be about what it must be like.
00:29To have to face a world every day that doesn't know how to face you back.
00:34Wonder is taught in all these schools all across the world.
00:36I loved it. I read it with my kids. They all loved it.
00:39She did something really beautiful and creative that we all benefit from.
00:45It's about a boy with cranial facial syndrome,
00:48and how hard it is for him to have friends and be accepted by other people.
00:52He has an astronaut helmet that he wears that makes him feel safe.
00:56After being homeschooled his whole life because he was always recovering from one of his 27 surgeries,
01:01Augie Pullman goes to a school for the first time.
01:04Dear God, please make them be nice to him.
01:06He deals with a lot of bullying and prejudice, meanness from adults and children.
01:11What's the deal with your face?
01:13Shut up!
01:14You shut up!
01:15Why don't we all shut up?
01:16Action!
01:17We're following him as he enters into the world and seeing how the world sort of has to reshape itself around him.
01:23He's ready.
01:24He's not ready!
01:25I cannot homeschool him forever!
01:27Playing Augie's mom became immediately consuming in the most incredible way.
01:32She really, like, makes him feel better whenever he's sad by using her mother powers.
01:37You are not ugly, and anyone who cares to know you will see that.
01:44I'm playing Augie's father.
01:46We have kind of a playful relationship that involves our karate and lightsabers.
01:53Looking short.
01:54Thanks, Dad.
01:55You're talking about me.
01:59Augie's played by Jacob Tremblay.
02:01He's as gifted as any actor I've ever seen.
02:03Jacob has this almost a savant-like ability to throw himself completely into the moment, into the character,
02:09and then the minute you take off that mask, he's Jacob again.
02:11Hey, Jacob!
02:12Hey, Dad!
02:13Family mark.
02:14Have you ever thought about having plastic surgery?
02:16Dude, this is after plastic surgery.
02:18It takes a lot of work to look this good.
02:21They say I must be one of the wonders, guys of creation.
02:27Wonder is a movie everybody can go to, everybody can be entertained by.
02:32And it's about how to look at someone's heart rather than the package that we're all dressed up in.
02:38This is a superhero movie.
02:40To me, Augie's a superhero.
02:42Cause I must be one of the wonders
