00:00 The 75 hard challenge is the latest TikTok trend that can allegedly harm its participants.
00:05 But what does the challenge entail and why can it be so detrimental?
00:13 Viral online trends and challenges are nothing new to the internet, nor are challenges that
00:17 end up having negative consequences.
00:20 One of the first major online trends to cause harm seemed completely innocent, the cinnamon
00:25 challenge.
00:26 When influencer GloZell tried it, the trend exploded, but was proven to be dangerous after
00:30 a number of people choked on the cinnamon.
00:32 As online challenges grew in popularity, they inevitably made their way into the fitness
00:37 world.
00:38 The latest fitness trend to hit TikTok is the 75 hard challenge, created by author,
00:42 podcaster, and motivational speaker Andy Frisella.
00:45 The challenge was published in 2020 and claims to be a "transformative mental toughness
00:50 program."
00:51 Participants must complete two 45-minute workouts, read at least 10 pages of a book, and drink
00:56 a gallon of water each day, or they will need to restart the challenge.
01:00 After a few TikTok users who decided to take on the program began posting their progress
01:04 online, 75 hard quickly went viral.
01:07 While it first became popular through users sharing their transformations, now the challenge
01:11 is receiving heat online after a TikToker claimed it had negative effects on her health.
01:16 Michelle Fairburn posted she was going to start 75 hard on July 13th.
01:20 A few weeks later, the TikToker fell ill and needed to go to the doctor to get checked
01:24 out.
01:25 "I woke up today and like my muscles are just so weak.
01:29 I can't eat.
01:30 I've been on the toilet like TMI, but I've been on the toilet all morning.
01:35 I'm so nauseous."
01:37 Fairburn's doctor recommended she lower her water intake, as it is possible to overhydrate
01:42 and experience symptoms such as nausea, muscle weakness, and headaches.
01:46 Fairburn eventually found out she was sodium deficient from all the water she was consuming.
01:50 "I have severe sodium deficiency, which actually can be fatal.
01:57 So now I'm going to the hospital and they're going to check everything and then apparently
02:01 they can raise my sodium gradually."
02:04 Fellow TikTokers cautioned other users to take all the hype from online fitness challenges
02:08 with a grain of salt.
