00:02 Well, thanks to Marlon Hopkinson, I hope you are having a bright start to your day
00:18 I am Sergio Dufour. Welcome to the sporting edition with a focus on the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League
00:23 This is what we have planned for you today. We are talking about power hitters the game changers
00:29 How are they made? How should they be used in this modern day of t20 cricket?
00:34 We've got a spot for you the fans as well to chime in
00:37 This is an important part to stay tuned as later on in the show
00:41 We will reveal the winners of the TV six Republic Bank CPL trivia promotion over the past two weeks
00:47 But before that before t20 perhaps we referred to power hitters as pinch hitters
00:53 But no more they are players that would come in to steal victory from the jaws of defeat
00:58 Now, yeah, they are practically a staple in t20 cricket in the last match of the Major League Cricket
01:05 Tournament Sunil Irine's LA Knight Riders. Well, they lost again
01:09 They were defeated by Washington freedom by six wickets after they chased
01:14 175 for seven now, this is despite 17 not out from Andre Russell this morning
01:21 The Nish Mahavir who is the head coach of TTCB Premiership one?
01:25 champions Clark Road
01:27 He will join us via zoom
01:29 But of course before we get to that, let's tell you about this match going on here now soon. Learn a Rhine
01:37 Unfortunately, well, he made a duck in this encounter
01:41 Let's go to the score sheet. So we have Jason Roy batting for the LA Knight Riders. He made just a seven runs
01:48 Unmukt chand he made 18
01:51 Nitish Kumar 9 Riley Russo 41
01:56 And of course you have Andre Russell making 70 runs in a losing effort. Let's see. Let's break this down
02:03 He had he faced the 37 balls. He scored six falls and six sixes
02:09 Sunil Narayan well as I mentioned he made a duck
02:12 So we have to know just how teams are structured they are attacked and why Sunil Narayan's the tactics have not been working for him
02:19 in this tournament, so
02:21 We have Dinesh on the line. Good morning Dinesh
02:26 Can you hear me clearly
02:28 Yes, I can hear you clearly. How are you doing this morning?
02:31 Oh, it's a pleasure to be here this morning all as well
02:34 Looking forward to the CPL and also cricket happening around the world with a lot of West Indians involved as well
02:40 Definitely. So tell me let's get into it immediately. What's what's the best way? Do you think that these game changers should be used?
02:47 Well, definitely looking at the West Indians, you know, we
02:53 Kind of told it as power hitters throughout the world and
02:56 You know, they tend to use them at the top of the order in the power play or at the end of the innings to finish innings
03:03 You know that that's that's the best way to use them
03:07 We see that West Indies have struggled in all formats in what they call middle overs
03:12 In scoring in the where there are a lot of restrictions or guys on the boundary
03:16 So the West Indies guys now tend to go to what's like you say power hit a role
03:22 going to the top of the order where there's two guys out on the boundary or at the end of the inning where
03:27 Whatever happens you have to clear the ropes
03:29 Definitely. So so tell us what has Clark we've been doing in the offseason to remain on top
03:35 Well this year, you know, we we raised the 50 over title a white boy white ball title, which is really
03:43 Something that I haven't done in nine years and and in during the offseason we spent a lot of time
03:50 Putting in an initiative where we work throughout the offseason. It's never been done before
03:56 You know a year-long program at the end that starts at the end of one season straight towards the beginning of the next
04:02 And that means that we stay together as a group. We train together as a group
04:06 We refine our skills and come prepared for the season
04:09 What you find is that a lot of teams just show up maybe a month before to try to get started for a season
04:15 This time we took six months
04:18 Definitely. So so would you say is your team balance? Are you still working to find? I know you want it one month? Yes
04:23 But is it the perfect team?
04:25 Um, you know, it's hard to change a winning combination, but there's so many opportunities in cricket
04:32 And there's so many young players and parents that are pushing for spots
04:37 In the club cricket, you know, just like the national team
04:40 They're very limited spots in club cricket in trinidad and there are so many youth tournaments now happening and so many young players
04:46 And there are so many youth tournaments now happening and so many youths going to many coaching programs and clinics who are looking for these spots
04:53 So, you know what it is is it provides healthy competition and therefore there's a lot of people now
04:59 Looking to change clubs and there's a lot of young persons looking to get into clubs
05:04 All right. So so tell us what's the solution to having a team stacked with game changers?
05:10 How do you approach a match like that and let's say supposedly they're in form?
05:15 It's about balancing your assets it's about horses for courses as they say you use guys
05:20 In the positions that you need them to you know, um
05:23 If you look at the statistics if you look at the roles that people play
05:27 In cricket some guys will be more proficient at the top of the order
05:32 Some guys would be more proficient in the middle of the end
05:34 And it's just like bowlers you have to find the right guy and the right matchups to face the situation
05:40 And it sometimes comes into play who your opponents are, you know
05:43 It depends on what their strengths are and what you have to counteract them
05:46 So I know Puran is in your team. What has been the role of Puran in Clark Road's charge to the title?
05:52 Well, unfortunately Puran was unavailable this season and because of his IPL duties
05:58 But you know, he's been a young man in Clark Road from the age of 16
06:02 He's won a title nine years ago with Clark Road and he was and he rejoined the club this year
06:08 And although unavailable he played an instrumental role in us winning a title from off the field
06:15 So, um, we look at we look at that as a massive boost of confidence from him
06:19 There is going to be a lot of experience shared from him
06:22 Um, but you know throughout the years he's been Puran is a perfect example because he's been used almost at one two
06:28 Three four five six seven in all formats, you know, he's batted up and down the order. Um, it's good to see him cement a more
06:37 Cemented role in a certain positions now so that you know what to expect from him
06:42 But definitely he's a game changer no matter where he plays. So would you say he was born to do this?
06:46 Oh, absolutely. I mean, uh a young man at maybe age 14 or 15
06:52 Uh, he was playing with big men like they say in trinidad
06:55 He would have been playing big man cricket, uh for a long time now, which is which means that from a young age
07:01 He was ready to take on the best in trinidad
07:04 To play with uh the top level in trinidad and it was a guy who was a prodigy or a mark for greatness
07:11 And there are still a few guys like that around in trinidad as well
07:14 I know he has improved but have you seen a change in him before and after his accident?
07:19 Oh, absolutely. Um, he's he's a guy who's evolved a lot over the years
07:25 The accident of course would have been a massive catalyst to bounce back from literally bounce back
07:30 For the lack of a better term for something like that and then his experiences in the ipl
07:35 um, I think really
07:37 Brought the maturity in him brought the experience in him and now we are we're seeing the best of him
07:42 So tell me how would guys like evan lewis chris gale or andrew russell fame the 80s if t20 existed then?
07:49 Uh, it's hard to say but uh, the bats were a lot smaller there so jill I don't know if they could have coped with it then
07:58 but um
07:59 I think with their style, you know, they they and their attitude their aggressive attitude. I think you know, it would have been
08:06 um, maybe something like survive, you know, like some sort of fearless cricket
08:11 Um that was seniors were known for in those days and continue to be known for uh, aggressive cricket. Um,
08:18 I I think they they maybe they lacked a lot of the style that the the old school guys have but you know
08:24 I'm, not really want to look back on former glories. Now. I'm looking forward to some future glory
08:30 Well, tell me I mean as you mentioned cricket, well, it may be a power-hitting thing for west indians
08:35 But how important is the cpl towards nurturing this facet?
08:39 Or cpl provides a massive opportunity for those in the caribbean to provide a global platform to provide us a platform for
08:47 Guys to announce herself on the global stage. Yes. It's our homegrown tournament
08:52 Um, but you do well there and you air mark yourself for opportunities around around cricket in the t20
08:59 Leagues now, I mean look at ml. Look at the major league cricket that's just come on board. You know, you you do well in cpl and
09:06 Agents and eyes are going to be on you, you know for me personally
09:11 I would like to see more opportunities for guys who do well in our domestic t20
09:15 And around the caribbean for example
09:17 There's a guy in antiga if if he makes the most runs in the antiga cool and smooth t20
09:22 He's almost automatically guaranteed a place in a cpl team. Is that the same in trinidad?
09:27 That's what I would like to see. It's a tournament of opportunity. So i'd like to see people getting opportunities
09:32 Well, thanks a lot for joining us this morning. Of course, we will continue the conversation as it goes along
09:38 We i'm sure we'll be back on with you again in the future as we continue to follow the developments in the caribbean premier league
09:45 All right. So now puran has been putting in the work, of course as we would have mentioned him there
09:50 Let's let's look a little bit into what he has been doing this year
09:53 2023 has been a great year for him this year. He is he has a batting average of 61.14
09:58 After scoring 428 runs from nine matches for the recently concluded icct 20 world cup qualifiers
10:07 He had scores of 43 115
10:09 34 104 not out
10:13 71 19 and 14 in contrast from 2022 his batting average stood at 24.33
10:20 So ladies and gentlemen, what has puran been doing?
10:24 Well, as it turns out he's taking extra lessons to fine-tune his striking
10:29 He paid a visit to the kumarampat cricket academy where puran has found a way to turn defensive strokes into sixes
10:36 And convert singles into boundaries
10:40 Okay, everyone so we're speaking to vasu rampart at the head coach of the kumarampat cricket academy
10:45 So vasu I understand that nicholas puran came out of this academy. How was he able to reach so far under your wing?
10:52 Nicholas has been here with us for the past eight years
10:56 training at the academy
10:58 At the very beginning of this cricket facility here
11:01 I remember in the early days puran would be here
11:06 Eight nine in the morning sometimes six seven in the morning and he's here training for hours
11:11 The days when he would bat 600 balls 900 balls
11:15 He wouldn't get tired batting. Um, I remember
11:19 Just before he made it to the mumbai indians team and the ipl
11:25 We we had a session scheduled and there was a lot of rain the country flooded out on that particular day
11:34 So I was at home and I was expecting a cancellation call because I got
11:38 About 30 cancellation calls on on that friday evening
11:42 Because I flooded all over the country puran called me. He was vasu. I'm on the way to the academy now
11:49 That evening puran batted
11:53 1500 balls 900 machine balls
11:56 And 600 tennis balls
11:59 On that particular evening exactly one year later. He made his ipl debut
12:05 So he was always a monster. He was always after the cricket
12:08 Puran was always after the cricket. Um
12:11 Stories will tell you that he was a new wheelchair playing cricket too after his accident, right?
12:16 He says he was born for cricket
12:19 And he'll make the best of himself through cricket. He's always said it and i've seen it happen. So what age he started here
12:28 Puran would have started here just around
12:30 1920 there about so it was after his accident so in terms of his development
12:36 What could you tell about the batsman? Would you say he was always aggressive or he was more the technical player?
12:41 Initially puran was a very very aggressive batman in his younger days his reflexes
12:48 His quick hands through the ball. It worked very well for him
12:53 So naturally from batting a lot of balls, he would hit balls out of the park
12:57 I remember at 16 in a national cricket center
13:01 A fast bowler bumps him and he hit that ball clean over the national cricket center in nobel and out of the ground
13:09 Now
13:12 Puran focus is his attitude towards training changed a lot in the last four or five years before it was more
13:18 So just batting a lot of balls
13:20 Now there's an unparalleled level of focus when he trains
13:24 So you'll find him actually last session that we have posted with him. He would have batted 90 minutes
13:31 And 81 minutes of that was playing jives into the ground pulls into the ground cut shots into the ground
13:36 And just nine minutes of power hitting
13:39 Why why why is why is it so precise to put numbers to say?
13:44 Well, he faced 900 balls or he he batted for nine minutes. Why is it so precise?
13:50 From a coaching perspective repetition is important repetition maintaining quality
13:55 As coaches we'll have batsmen that have different skills or different abilities
14:00 you'll have the ones that have
14:03 Have like good reflexes good hands that work for them
14:07 So they don't necessarily need a lot of footwork
14:09 But then you'll have the ones that want to work on technique work on work on their reflexes and by doing it over and over
14:15 There's what you call neuromuscular triggers that happen
14:20 At the brain and muscle level and once you repeat it the process becomes a lot cleaner and cleaner over time
14:27 Now when you look at his batting style, well, he's obviously quite aggressive if you had a different batsman to train
14:35 What sort of different techniques approaches would you encourage?
14:38 So initially we try to develop a well-rounded batsman as they come up
14:43 So they must have that that ability to stay and bat and endure and spend time at the middle of the wicket
14:50 That's his style of batsman. We try to build that first
14:53 And afterward we develop the scoring that 360 scoring game the power game because I believe that the foundation

16:59 The cpl returns to tv6 august 16th to september 24th be watching
17:05 All right, well we spent the morning talking about puran in another era the conversation may have been on vivian richards
17:20 I'm not about to compare the two you won't get that from me
17:23 But I do know that two people they like to see them both in t20 cricket
17:28 So if you were to put vivian richards on a team
17:30 In cpl what number would you put him to bat? Oh, that's about three. No doubt
17:35 Um, you know, I mean viv richards in any format of cricket, you know
17:39 I hear people talking about formats of cricket these days that oh, this one is not suited to that viv richards would have played
17:45 I mean if if he had to play in the sea, he would have been great, you know
17:50 I mean you're talking about one of the legends one of the greatest batsmen ever, you know
17:53 So yeah, he would have been batting and I don't care who would have been on the team vivian richards
17:58 For me would have batted at number three
18:00 What sort of scores would you gotten from him as an average in t20 cricket?
18:04 That is so difficult to assess because I mean it's it's t20 cricket again
18:09 It depends on the star the teams gets but he you know
18:12 He's the kind of player that would go in whether you lose an early wicket or even if a foundation was built
18:18 He was the kind of player that would take the team to the next level
18:22 Player that would take the attack to the bowlers, you know
18:25 From the time you he went into bat
18:28 The the bowlers had a different mindset, you know, how do I bowl to this man?
18:33 You know, do I do I bowl it short, you know, and if I bowl it short
18:37 I maybe hit out of the ground do I take it up to him and if I take it up to him i'm gonna be hit over
18:42 Back over overhead. So, you know, it was it was bowlers. He he had this
18:46 sort of um
18:49 psychological effect on on a bowler, you know, um, so, you know, you lose an early wicket
18:54 beverages with a batter the same way as if a foundation was built, you know, so, um again, you know, it's it's
19:01 He was one of those he he was one of those greats, you know, and and um, yeah, you know
19:07 Too much praise if there's not too much praise for beverages
19:11 If you were to pick a bowler from that time period who would it be as a pace bowler?
19:16 To to compliment someone like viv in the batting lineup. Oh, that's a difficult. I think that's more difficult than than than the questions
19:23 You asked me about viv. Um
19:25 Personally, I like andy roberts, you know, I just thought andy had everything
19:32 You needed in a pace bowler. He had
19:35 He had swing he had pace he had variety
19:40 And I think once you you looked at andy roberts to me
19:44 He he would have been the one I would have liked for t20 cricket because andy was an intelligent bowler
19:51 He would assess a batsman. He would he would look at a batsman's weakness and know, you know, look
19:56 He doesn't like the short ball or he don't like the balls moving away from him outside the line of the off stump
20:02 So andy to me would have been an ideal type of bowler if he was around now for t20
20:09 To t20 cricket and if you were to pick a captain of that side
20:14 Boy, um
20:16 That's a good one. Um, obviously clive lloyd, um, you know clive
20:20 Clive had he knew what he knew how to motivate his players
20:24 And I think that was the most important thing a captain is not only someone with a tactical approach
20:30 They gave you have a captain who you could look at and say, okay
20:33 You know, he would look at a batsman and he can tell the batsman's weaknesses and that's one aspect of a captain
20:39 What is great about a captain?
20:42 is
20:43 His ability to motivate his players when the chips are down when when a bowler is not doing well
20:50 You know, he is there to to make him feel good. He's there to motivate him, you know
20:56 And he's he knows when to pull him out of the attack when to bring him into the attack
21:01 So so he's there to add that confidence and I think that was one of clive lloyd's biggest assets people talked about his tactical ability
21:09 I thought live lloyd biggest asset to me was as a motivator
21:12 So it would not have mattered what era they would have participated in
21:15 They would have scored runs and taken wickets because of their view of the game. Absolutely. Absolutely. There's no doubt
21:21 Um, yeah, the ability was one but I think they're they're cricketed intelligent, you know people
21:27 Talk about ability and yeah ability is one but i've seen many players have ability and don't have cricket and intelligence
21:35 And when you don't have cricket and intelligence
21:37 um, you can have all the ability in the world, but
21:41 You don't do as well as you should and you have some players that would have cricket and intelligence
21:47 that may not have
21:50 Ability as another player but do just as well or do even better
21:54 Um, so it's it's how you assess the game. It's how you think about the game
21:58 It's how you think about your own performance and what you do to to be even a better player than you are
22:04 By by using that type of intelligence to assess things, you know, uh, you you I mean batting wise
22:11 You know, you've got to outthink the bowler, you know, you you've got to decide well look
22:15 The bowler he wants to attack me outside the off stump. How do I counter that?
22:19 You know, you know and then as a bowler you then you look at it the other way around
22:23 You know, you you look at a batsman and you have to analyze the batsman you have to say, okay
22:26 He looks weak. He looks weak with a short ball
22:28 You sometimes don't have the let the captain come up to tell you that you as a bowler need to analyze it yourself
22:35 You need you know as a bowler
22:36 You need to look at batsmen and look at the batting and look at how they bat and that's how the great bowlers
22:42 Do it all the great bowlers who have over four five hundred wickets. They will tell you that that hey, you know
22:48 They're able to assess a batsman. They're able to look at a batsman and because of that they're able to
22:53 To think him out and that's the big deal
22:56 Mr. Murray. Thanks a lot. You're welcome
22:59 All right. So if brian lara and vivian richards was on the same t20 team. Yeah
23:05 What positions would you place them to bat to bat brian? Aaron vivian richards? I am
23:09 independently state of the game I
23:12 Because of 20 overs I would actually open with both of them, you know, I I would actually open with both of them
23:19 They they definitely both of them could bat three no problem
23:23 But given given the state of 20
23:26 So we want to hear from you call us now at six two three one seven one one extension
23:32 One nine nine five as a fan of cricket. All you can do is dream of the battles that could have been
23:36 Who would do better in what era and which bowler would complement which team?
23:41 It's something for us all to think about so give us a call
23:44 Okay, you have the numbers on your screen six two three one seven one one extension one nine nine five
23:50 Now I have a question is lara or dravid on your team
23:53 You have time to think about it. I would like to know what your all-time dream t20 team would look like you could decide
24:02 We can make it an all west indian team
24:04 You can mix the team you can give me your responses on whether you think russell is a better power hitter than
24:11 puran
24:13 I know maybe some of you would not want to compare. Uh, by the way, uh, kind of what you tell me
24:18 Tell me what your thoughts I I want to hear from you six two three one seven one one extension
24:24 one nine nine five the views are yours we of course
24:28 We don't judge. Uh, we know this is cricket
24:30 We know sometimes we could be fierce about arguing about our teams and our players because we're so passionate
24:36 About the sport, but you know, you've heard the discussion this morning. We had a dinesh on the line
24:41 He would have given his views and we also had the views of the respective commentators and respective
24:48 uh dignitaries in sport in trinidad and tobago they shared on
24:52 you know whether
24:54 Brian lara would be a better batsman and whatever position so good morning maloney
25:00 Maloney are you hearing me?
25:04 Okay, so we seem to have do we have maloney
25:13 No, yes, we're hearing you maloney. So maloney tell us your views tell us your views. Are you do you want to comment on how are you?
25:21 I'm doing okay. And how are you?
25:24 Good morning. Good morning. Good morning. Good morning. Good morning. Good morning. Good morning. Good morning
25:29 Yes, so tell us your views who would you prefer brian lara
25:34 Yes, I can hear you maloney
25:37 Good morning. Tell us your views. Who would you prefer brian lara or viv on your team or would you have them both?
25:43 My thought process i mean i'm brilliant show this morning. Um
25:52 Brian lara
25:54 Stop listening to me
26:00 I would not open with brown as a t20 player. Okay as in this modern time
26:05 Viv richards definitely because
26:08 He has the better eye brown. He needs to be in with a couple of balls and a little base
26:14 Yeah to start the play the game, um
26:20 It is two different eras two different eras the old school eras was more exciting to watch in terms of cricket
