00:00 Another day, another massive spate of airline delays and cancellations, this time due to
00:04 severe storms on the East Coast.
00:07 Now a myriad of airlines are asking for help from the FAA, hoping they will give them a
00:11 pass and extend a waiver that lets them run fewer flights.
00:14 According to FlightAware, some 1,768 flights were straight up cancelled this past Monday,
00:20 with at least 8,900 delays.
00:22 In fact, the busiest airport in America, the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport,
00:27 was the epicenter of both the storm and the cancellations, having some 48% of its outbound
00:32 flights and 41% of all inbound flights affected.
00:36 And many of those issues have had a domino effect all over the country, as airlines and
00:40 airports continue to play catch up in the following days.
00:43 Which is why Airlines for America recently wrote a letter to the FAA saying that the
00:47 reduced service waiver was working, and they need it extended at least through the rest
00:51 of the summer travel season, explaining that weather and air traffic controller shortages
00:56 are driving the necessity, writing in the letter, quote, "Granting relief for the rest
01:00 of the summer season is in the best interest of the flying public because it will minimize
01:04 disruptions and provide greater predictability for airlines and consumers."
01:08 Reuters reports the FAA says it's still reviewing the data, and will make a decision on that
01:13 matter soon.
