00:00 The Department of Education is in the process of conducting the National Learning Camp,
00:04 which focuses on teaching students who struggle in reading and math subjects.
00:09 Kenneth Paciente has more.
00:11 Angela took her granddaughter to school early this morning, and even if they're on vacation,
00:18 she will continue to go to school under the National Learning Camp, or NLC, that is being
00:23 implemented by Education Department.
00:26 She let her granddaughter enroll in the NLC because she is still having a hard time to
00:30 read.
00:31 That's why it's okay with Angela even her granddaughter does not get a vacation.
00:36 It's okay as long as it's continuous, so that the brain can improve and learn.
00:45 More than a hundred students of President Corazon Aquino Elementary School in Quezon
00:48 City participated in the NLC, and in every class, they are taught how to read and do
00:54 arithmetic, but has it been effective?
00:57 For NLC teacher Ronna, she saw improvement in the students.
01:01 Here, like me, I'm not a reading teacher, but I teach how to make a child read, how
01:09 to use a strategy to make a child read.
01:13 But besides NLC's aim to fill in the learning loss among students, the NLC also targets
01:19 to improve the teaching skills of the teachers.
01:22 Besides elementary, the NLC is also the method of learning in high school, particularly
01:27 grades 7 and 8, like in Batasan High School.
01:30 According to the school management, they make sure classes are filled with activities so
01:35 students don't feel bored.
01:37 So this is the concept of all the subjects involved, like math, science, and English.
01:44 This is the concept where we know what the reality of the subject is.
01:53 The school admits class attendance and students' participation in the NLC suffered due to bad
01:58 weather caused by typhoons, egay, falcon, and monsoon rains.
02:03 But they addressed it immediately.
02:05 We have advisors in all sections and they give information or additional activities
02:18 so that our program continues.
02:21 Even if it's at home or school, it's still one of our objectives.
02:30 The National Learning Camp of the DepEd will last until August 25, or four days before
02:35 the opening of school year 2023 to 2024.
02:39 Kenneth Paciente, for the Nation.
